BYU Road Trip

I am traveling to Provo from Colorado to watch the Huskies start Locker's heisman campaign.  I was wondering if anyone knew how I could get tickets in the U-Dub section.  Also, will there being any fan events or tailgating areas at the stadium.  Also, is anyone going to the game or has anyone traveled to Provo in the past, that could give me some ideas on how to make the most out of my experience

WOOF!

UW Warm-up

When my ex and I traveled to the 1997 matchup we had a blast! The Alumni Group had rented out a bar that was real close to BYU’s stadium. The had this huge speaker system setup and they played choice numbers like “Let’s get drunk and screw!” I think Jimmie Buffet wrote and sang it? Anyway it was an AWESOME, Nick Holt like experience.

You should still be able to get tickets through the Husky Ticket office.

What Alumni Group?

I know there’s no formal Husky Warmup for this one. Who put on the one you went to, and how did you hear about it?

by Sundodger on Aug 5, 2010 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

The UW Alumni Association

Der? It was 1997 and I really don’t remember how we heard about it. I think we just got there early enough to just happen upon it. We were looking for a place to tailgate before the game and what could be better than being surrounded by our fellow DAWGfans.

Should've been more clear.

The Alumni Association usually puts on an official warmup at the visiting stadium. They aren’t doing it for BYU. I was wondering if there was a different group that hosted something as well. It could be that in 1997, the Alumni Association hosted it at a bar.

by Sundodger on Aug 9, 2010 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

It's been a lot of years ago...

…I’m almost certain though it was the UW Alumni Assoc that hosted. It sure looked like a bar, restaurant/bar? It was in their parking lot and that was what was so funny about it. Like I said they had huge speakers set up and they played “Let’s get drunk and screw” by Jimmy Buffet! It was too funny! My wife and I had a fantastic time! Of course it helped that we trounced them, the score was like 42-14 or something like that.

You have to be a season ticket holder

Living in Denver I dont know any season ticket holders. Any season ticket holders in Colorado out there?

drinking laws

A few things to be aware of if you are someone that drinks:

- Beer served and sold in Utah is typically a lower alcohol content version than you find elsewhere
- By law, you can’t have more than one alcoholic beverage in front of you at your table at a time, so you literally have to finish your existing drink and have it taken away before the next one will be served
- It can be quite difficult finding places that stay open late, especially ones that serve alcohol

All that said, I’ve found the people in Utah to generally be quite pleasant.

No particular insights about Provo – I’ve only stayed in SLC and Park City (and Park City during Sundance is generally an exception to the above rules I mentioned).

by kirkd on Aug 5, 2010 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

ABV vs ABW

The difference is most alcohol is sold ABV. In Utah (and non liquor stores in Colorado) they sale 3.2% by weight. which is typically equivalent 4.0% ABV. So most people think there is a huge difference but its really not. If you are drinking light beer anyway.

BYU isn't a trip I would take

That is just me…too much of a project to assemble a cocktail.

by John Berkowitz on Aug 6, 2010 7:24 AM PDT up reply actions

My wife and I...

…ate lunch at the Red Robin in Provo. There were no drinks listed on the menu. We asked if they served alcohol and the gal said “Oh we have another menu for that” The beer and wine seemed to be the same stuff as we have up here. But that’s based on an impression I had 13 years ago.

Breweries make special beers specifically for Utah and Oklahoma

some of their recipies fall within the guidlines anyway, but alot of brews have to be tweaked for those markets.

I recommend taking the Redhook tour

it’s really a very informative tour as to some of the quirky basic brewing concepts and alot of fun facts….and it ends up being about 3 pints for a dollar (plus a souvenier glass).

That’s where I heard all about the OK and UT laws and the workarounds.

by B Money on Aug 6, 2010 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

WOW!

Thanks B Money! That’s my brand! Three pints for a dollar! Sign me up! I wish they wouldn’t have discontinued “Blackhook”, that was good too. I never tried Copperhook. Sorry for digressing into beer talk BUT having said that, it is relevant tailgate information…isn’t it? ;O)

Bummer, Blackhook was a pretty decent porter

If you liked BH, might I suggest the Mocha Porter from Rogue brewery. Outstanding…also the Double Chocolate Stout is a pretty good one in a similar style.

Copperhook is a good summer style ale. Another I might suggest for summer, a good cold Dales Pale Ale. I also like Redhooks Blonde quite a bit. It’s quite an underrated brewery. Props for carrying the Seattle beer flag.

by B Money on Aug 8, 2010 6:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks!

I’ve been looking for something to replace the blackhook. I’ll try it. We don’t get the selection over here on the east side. Very few Porters etc. Plenty of Bud and Bud Light though! :O(

They also have a brewery in Issaquah.

So, I consider it a Washington beer as well.

Good bar food there.

by Sundodger on Aug 9, 2010 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think they brew any of their flagship stuff their

they bought it from the Issaqah Brewing Co. (I think that’s who made the old bullfrog ale).

Bar food is top notch their though.

I checked my...

Bad idea, as soon as I picked up my drink to move the employee stopped me. Apparently the law in Utah is such that the staff has to move your drink for you. Pretty weird but we still had a great time. My wife was down there recently and she said it had gotten much better.

It looks like Jake Heaps will be starting his first game. Never a good sign vs a team with a great 4 year starter. The huskies win the game outright by 10 points. I like the MWC but Byu is going to have a down year and finish 4th in the MWC. Maybe even fifth. They lost their four best offensive players.
