Washington Huskies 2011 Recruiting: Early Verbal Commits, Part One

Coach Steve Sarkisian is building quite a buzz around his program at the University of Washington. Sarkisian brought in a large class of 31 recruits for 2010 to address depth and add more potential playmakers.

Washington ended their recruiting by splash signing safety Sean Parker, who was thought to be a heavy Michigan lean, on national signing day.

Sarkisian is wasting no time making an impact when it comes to the 2011 class, having already received verbal commitments from seven players. The trick will be keeping these prospects committed to Washington after getting the full-court press from schools like Southern California.

Here is a quick look at the players that have committed to Washington thus far.

Brendon Bigelow : 5’10", 180 lbs.

Bigelow is a big-time running back recruit who has caught the attention of schools like Southern California, California, Tennessee, and Miami.

Sarkisian was able to get his hooks in him first, and he impressed Bigelow with a scholarship offer even after an injury which required surgery. Combine that loyalty with the fact his mother lives in the Seattle area, and  it is easy to see why Bigelow likes the idea of donning the purple and gold.

Washington looks to benefit from loyalty and persistence. In Bigelow, they added a talented back that put up 1,000 yards—at 11.5 yards per carry—with 14 touchdowns during the 2009 season. He was also a threat as a receiver with 23 pass catches for 327 yards.

Sarkisian has done well bringing in potential playmakers to the backfield, and this ESPNU Top 150 watch-list prospect looks to be next in line.

Ma-autua Brown: 6’4”, 280 lbs.

The key for Washington’s return to the top of the Pac-10 is building strong lines. Sarkisian received a huge commitment in this area when Ma-autua Brown of Parmount, Calif. gave a verbal pledge to play football at Washington.

Brown is considered possibly the best offensive line prospect in the state of California, and is on the ESPNU Top 150 watch list. Prior to the Rising Stars Camp he was a bit of an unknown, but schools certainly know who he is now.

Sarkisian was able to spot this talented lineman and get in his ear early. Brown wanted to get the recruiting process done and over with so he could concentrate on his senior season.

For right now, he is listed as a soft verbal as there are sure to be a steady line of schools trying to woo him away from Seattle, so this will be a good test of Sarkisian’s recruiting prowess.
