Details on what happened from Condotta’s blog:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskyfootballblog/2011299538_pulu_suspended_indefinitely.html

Given the description, I think all involved are lucky that it didn’t turn out worse…

It sounds like a pretty viscous assault and there is absolutely no reason for that. I think chances are pretty good that Pulu won’t be with the squad much longer. Sounds like he could have killed that guy and will most likely face jail time.

Yeah, it’s pretty bad. Pulu needs some anger management training. I would guess that Sark has laid down certain conditions for him to return. This is likely the first time this has happened with Pulu, otherwise I’d suspect Sark would’ve dismissed him outright.

He should be able to work his way back onto the team

It’s the offseason and crap does happen everywhere, unfortunately. I’d hope that a dumb mistake doesn’t screw up his career

by cougfan on Mar 9, 2010 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

To me, this kind of thing is his wake-up call – he has an anger-management problem he needs to address. If it’s me, his next screw-up is his last as a member of the team.

I get that these kinds of things aren’t rare among football players, that it comes with the territory. But it’s also a “teachable moment” to use the current favored phrase – he needs to learn that his aggression needs to stay between the sidelines.

by kirkd on Mar 9, 2010 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

I think to an extent most football players have some kind of anger issues, as we’ve kind of discussed here before.

I also think Sark can set out guidelines for him to follow in order to work his way back into favor, hence the indefinite suspension. It should be his first, and last, warning for this kind of thing, but he also shouldn’t be straight up dropped right away for it. If he can get some help, and show improvement off the field, then I see no reason why he can’t be back playing and he’ll be a better man. I obviously subscribe to the coaches are mentors theory and are charged with improving the character and discipline of their players.

by cougfan on Mar 9, 2010 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

Agree completely. The fact that it’s an indefinite suspension and not a dismissal indicates to me that this is the first time Sark is aware of Pulu doing anything like this, and he gets one chance to turn himself around.

UW has already gone through its "forgive all trespasses" era.

… we survived our version of the “Jailblazer” era and we won’t be that program again. I’m sure he’ll be given a chance to demonstrate his innocence (maybe the other guy hit that kid?), but if he stomped on a kid’s skull while that kid was on the ground – he doesn’t need to be here.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Sark Came From BYU where there is Zero Tolerance

Pulu hasn’t been asrrested…but at Oregon and WSU players are kept on the team without suspension even though they are arrested. Star system in effect. That is a perception from out side of those two programs. Playing Football in a Major College program is a privlege. As an alumni and Tyee memeber, I want ZERO tolerance in rebuilding the Husky program. Sark you did the right thing. Bringing Pulu back sends the wrong message. Thugs are not apart of Husky Football.

For the record.

Every WSU player is suspended after an arrest until the coaches have a chance to figure out what happened. Wulff reinstates them if he thinks they deserve another chance or if things were blown out of proportion to begin with (which happens a lot in Pullman). He releases them if he doesn’t think it’s something that warrants another chance.

Zero Tolerance...

…for any further BS. I can see giving a young man a second chance but this is serious stuff and if he can’t keep his nose clean from here on out, he needs to be gone. A lot of these athletes have been treated like the “proverbial golden child” throughout their lives and they need to understand how serious this is. Luckily the guy is alive and hopefully will fully recover but he could just as easily be dead. I hope, like Kirk said, this is a wake up call to the entire team.

Completely agree with the dismissal

I don’t condone fighting, whether on the field or off and I think this is the approprate stance on the matter. Playing college football is not a birth right- it is a priveledge. And that is why I still think Oregon dropped the ball on the LaGarrett Blount debacle in Boise.

You want to to be stupid, then by all means you don’t belong at the University of Washington- PERIOD!

It wasn't a dismissal

It’s just a suspension and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back at some point

by cougfan on Mar 9, 2010 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

I believe in zero tolerance...

When it comes to this sort of behavior. Our society offers 2nd chances and that’s great. But playing college football on a full ride scholarship is a priveledge and if kids are dumb enough to piss that away, then I don’t think they belong at the University of Washington. I mispoke, but I still believe an immediate dismissal is warrented pertaining to this issue.

He should be gone

If Pulu actually did assault a stranger like that, he needs to be kicked off the team. He can get his second chance somewhere else.

by Scott Frost on Mar 9, 2010 7:45 PM PST reply actions

I tend to agree...

…though I do think these are very young guys. You and I were both young once and we know how stupid we could be. These kids need to have it hammered home, again and again, that you’re in a position that other kids would absolutely LOVE to be in! Further, you guys are physically superior to JUST ABOUT EVERYONE WHO WALKS THE STREETS! So take some time to think about that, let it sink in and keep that in mind, before you venture out into the world.

I was stupid...

but stomping on a man’s head while he’s on the ground is not young and stupid. It’s attempted murder as far as I’m concerned. There is no place for this.

I say wait for the facts before he is removed from the team, but indefinate suspension is the right way to go for right now. If it comes out that he did in fact do what he’s accused of, he’d better be off the team.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J. Jasper Howard had his little sisters' names tatooed on his chest. His friends say it was a constant reminder of why he was at U Conn _ to provide his family with a better life than the one he had in Miami's Little Haiti. (AP Photo/Mel Evans, File) link
