Another Oregon player in trouble. . . .

I'm a little surprised that nobody has reported on today's news from Oregon. There is only a small tidbit from an article on Yahoo sports, the article is dated today (2/20) and was updated this evening:

6:35 p.m. ET: Add another name to the list: Redshirt freshman linebacker Kiko Alonso, who was charged with driving drunk early this morning.)

Star-divide

So here is my question that I just can't get over, how on God's green earth does this happen just DAYS after LaMichael James gets thrown in jail?? Wouldn't the coaches have sat the whole team down and made it quite clear that this type of behavior can't be tolerated, especially now that Oregon is in the spot light for possibly being a program out of control? If you're an Oregon player, don't you think NOW would be a really good time NOT to do anything stupid??

I'm not surprised that yet another Oregon player is in trouble, but I am very surprised that the coaching staff hasn't screamed bloody murder and threatened the very lives of any student athlete that so much as j-walks!! I'm just as surprise that players could be so stupid as to drive drunk while the program is under such scrutiny!

Come on Oregon, get your head out of your backside, you are embarrassing the PAC10!!!!!

It's not just that it happened days after LMJ's incident

It’s that it also happened hours after a team meeting addressing off the field issues.

I’m sure that Duck fans will be quick to tell us that this is just another isolated incident though.

and how happy they are to have Chip “taking care,” of things…

by mynameisdavid on Feb 21, 2010 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

A couple of the guys at ATQ

were slamming Chip and Bellotti…there’s still quite a few who think things are fine, but the rumblings are starting to get louder.

Luck of Institutional is now appaent at the U of O

This sounds like Chip Kelly has lost the repsect of his player’s. Player’s still thinking they can get into trouble and still be on the team. I cannot beleive James has not been kicked off the team and Masoli at least suspended. Players are seeing the double standard being run by Kelly and the U of O Athletic Department and they know they can get away with anything.

The smoke is turning into a ragin fire witha lack of institutional control at Oregon. No doubt the NCCA is watching or maybe come on knocking very soon.

The experiment of Bellotti as AD and Kelly as Head Coach is definitley not working. U of O President stated bad condut by athletes is not acceptable. He should be looking at Kelly and Bellotti. They have failed the student athlete.

You cant just boot people

Everyone is afforded due process. Masoli can’t be suspended….he hasn’t been charged with a crime. James is under house arrest….so Id call that suspended. The kid that got a dui is cut and dry and he’s gone. Wait for the process to play out

by cougfan on Feb 21, 2010 3:03 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

You can though...

Football schoalrships don’t fall under the guise of due process. You can kick a kid off the team for anyting…like Jamere Holland was for racist and critical facebook rants. Masoli could be kicked just for being mentioned in a police report.

by B Money on Feb 21, 2010 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Im still of the let it unfold school with legal issues

Overall dumbassery, like a dui after a press conference and going racial online are different to me

by cougfan on Feb 21, 2010 3:20 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I agree

I think that it should be decided after all legal proceedings are final. I’m merely saying that they don’t play by the same rules as the law and can kick a kid off the team for almost anything.

James is out on $100,000 bail with a home monitroing device attached to his ankle and has five charges against him with two for assault and you said The kid that got a dui is cut and dry and he’s gone.

He is going to court March 5, he still has his due process, and it is not cut and dry. If he kicked off the Team so should James be kicked off the team.

He's not off the team, by the way. It was corrected earlier

And a DUI is pretty cut and dry, whereas a he said she said DV case is quite a bit different. Kid was underaged and driving drunk.

by cougfan on Feb 21, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

The DV case is pretty cut and dried.

James has two charges of the five charges against for assault in the 4th Degree. He left marks on the Victim. That is not he said, she said. WOW how clear cut is that??? He will get nailed on one of the assault charges.

by bigdawgdaddy999 on Feb 22, 2010 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

I should expand on that since it sounds terrible by itself

In a DV case, there is usually no other witnesses. It’s the victim’s word against the alleged attacker, and the observed marks are hardly proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The case that’s happening with James is a very odd as well with some of the things going on around it (reported a day and a half later, girlfriend outside of the court saying he’s a great guy and wouldn’t hurt anyone, and more). Also, assault 4 is not a serious charge. It’s the weakest assault charge and is a catch-all. That said, I, and I’m sure everyone else, would want him gone if he is convicted.

A DUI is a police officer witnessing an impaired driver, pulling them over, and administering a battery of tests. It’s quite different.

If you check their sites, it’s full of predictable responses: “Alonso & Holland are idiots, Masoli and James are innocent until proven guilty, these are all separate, unrelated events and the coaches are doing everything they can, there’s no systemic problem with the program, blah blah blah”

We just copied and pasted from the Jeremy Stevens incident and changed the name.

I don’t think you’ll find many people here that will defend Jerramy Stevens, and I for one thought Neuheisel was way too easy on him.

I think the big lesson here for Duck fans should be “those in glass houses should not cast stones”. Back when the UW program was having a lot of off-the-field issues, there was no shortage of Duck fans coming around and laughing at Husky fans. And some of us Husky fans that have been around long enough to know better said “This stuff can happen to any program – yours is not immune”. And lo and behold, here we are today.

Kelly can’t control everything his players do. But he clearly has some work cut out for him in enforcing discipline among his players when he makes a statement about what’s happening in the program on Friday and hours later Alonso is busted for a DUI and then Holland goes off with a public temper tantrum on Facebook.

"those in glass houses should not cast stones".

Hopefully you’re not lumping me in with the lot. As I have said before on here and will say again, “when you get into a pissing match about which program has less class, nobody wins.” Fans have no control over the actions of their players, coaches and program. They have influence, but even that is limited.

Alonso & Holland are idiots, Masoli and James are innocent until proven guilty, these are all separate, unrelated events and the coaches are doing everything they can, there’s no systemic problem with the program

The reason this is the predictable response is because it is the truth. Alonso and Holland did act like idiots. Luckily for Alonso he is given a second chance by Kelly, and hopefully he can capitalize on it. Holland is a straight up thug who never gave a damn about being a team player. His deletion was a long time coming.

And are Masoli and James not innocent until proven guilty? This is also the predictable but true response.

They are unrelated events. Masoli was accused (this is the keyword) of stealing laptops from a frat. James was accused of strangling and abusing his girlfriend. Alonso had a few bears and drove a car. Jamere Holland was just a punk who couldn’t get his shit together his entire time at Oregon.

I believe Chip Kelly is in fact doing everything he can. I expect nothing more and nothing less of everything he had done in handling these situations.

They are unrelated events.

Yes. Any maybe no – as a Duck fan, you’d better hope that’s the case. Because it’s quite possible that the Duck program has been recruiting too many questionable characters, and the coaches have not been doing a good enough job in making clear that there will be severe consequences for misdeeds.

by kirkd on Feb 24, 2010 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

I think that's entirely possible.

The most questionable character from the start was Holland. Masoli had a history too. Masoli seems to have cleaned up his act. His charges seem far, far less likely since the story first broke.

They are unrelated events.

I’m positive these are unrelated events. Personally, after I choke my girlfriend and brag about it on Facebook, I indeed drive drunk over to frats and steal laptops. Then again, I’m not like everyone else, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I think you know what I mean though. Yes, in a literal sense these are unrelated events. But in a bigger picture sense, they may very well be related because of who the Oregon coaches have been recruiting, how they’ve been developing these kids off-the-field and how they’ve been communicating and enforcing rules of behavior.

When you start having...

…this many incidents in a short period of time, most people believe there is a problem with the program as a whole. If this was going on at Washington I would not be happy.

DYNASTY

Any University threatening the U$C DYNASTY and TV and BOWL stranglehold is on thin ice period and should conduct themselves accordingly. Remember it only took fruit baskets and a cheeseburger last time they were upended.
