walk-on QB Taylor Bean leaves the program
Bob Condotta is reporting that walk-on QB Taylor Bean is leaving the team. While not a disaster, it does put more pressure on the limited depth at the position. Going into Spring Ball, there will only be 3 QB's (assuming Montana is able to enroll early). Not ideal from a practice standpoint, and if Montana needs some time to become college ready I think the coaches might have preferred to use Bean in an emergency and keep Montana's redshirt if disaster were to strike.
Sark will be looking for a new walk-on QB or two, and Condotta is also reporting that there may be a guy targeted as a replacement walk-on - Josh Yoder of Canby H.S. in Oregon.

I'd assume they try to take 2 QBs next year then?
Only having 2 scholarship QBs on the roster after Locker leaves wouldn’t be good at all.
I dunno – they may only take 1 considering that there probably won’t be as much room in next year’s class. Only 13 or so guys currently on scholarship that will be graduating, and even with some normal attrition and some more weeding out of non-contributors, I’d be a little surprised if they take more than 20.
I think 3 scholarship QB’s and a reasonable walk-on QB is probably sufficient for this year and next. My guess is Sark recruits 1 QB each season to eventually build up to having 5 scholarship QB’s at a time, with one redshirting.
What throws a monkey-wrench into that is QB’s are more likely than ever to transfer if they’re not playing.
I forgot about adding one with next years class
3 scholarship QBs in Price, Montana, and whomever they take would be fine with a walk-on to go with. We’re kind of having the same problem now with a Sr. Qb, a soph, and a true freshman, with Gilbertson’s kid as our walk-on (or the backup punter, as well). If you burn through three, there’s a problem, but I’ve seen it happen (actually in the span of about 20 minutes).
Yeah. I guess my feeling is, if you burn through three scholarship QB’s, chances are you probably aren’t going to win anyway, so why not play the walk-on?
It’s a calculated risk – with 85 roster spots and the desire to redshirt guys if you can, a coach has to employ some strategy in his roster composition. I think Sark may get to a point where he regularly has 4 scholarship QB’s at one time, but for now I think he’ll try to get by with 3 plus a walk-on or two.
QB tough position – I think we need to take two next year – need more depth – things will shake out – Sark great QB coach – great system for QBs – I think kids will want to be coached by him especially if Jake has a real big year like we all hope.
Also Dawgman shows 18 guys on scholarship who will be graduating next year or am I reading DM wrong? I think we will take 22 – 25 kids next year room for two QBs.
You’re reading it wrong, though to be fair it’s not organized well. The guys on scholarship that are graduating are all the guys in the “2010 (5th year)” column that don’t have a “#” after their name (which indicates they’re a walk-on) and all the guys in the “2010” that don’t have a “*” (which indicates they’ve red-shirted) or “#” after their name. There’s 13 guys graduating.
I could see maybe 6 more guys that might leave and a 7th that might be a medical scholarship candidate, but I’m sticking with a prediction of the class size topping out right around 20 next year, and possibly smaller than that. Maybe more guys will turn out to be medical scholarship candidates than I think, but I’d have to guess this is probably the last year we see Sark encouraging a lot of guys to leave, because after this year he’ll be left primarily with guys he’s recruited or guys that are key players left over from Willingham’s classes.
How do we get walk-ons into school? It is my understanding that it is very very difficult to get into the UW for any freshman – do invited walk-ons get special consideration? How did we do with Garcia in BB?
