Jim Sterk Leaving WSU for SDSU
I guess this probably means Paul Wulff is in his last legs, regardless of how he does this year; whoever they bring in will probably want to have his own guy. Darn.

Unless they hire from within
With John Johnson, then yep the new guy will want to bring his own guy in. In fact, even if they do hire Johnson he may be DOA
I'm Sure...
…the Wooluff would have been gone regardless. Unless he performs miracles next season.

Sterk
It’s pretty sad when you leave a Pac-10 School for San Diego State and it seems like a promotion.
I'd be tempted to take the SDSU job too
Perfect weather, best city on American soil, plenty of opportunities, family-friendly. What’s not to like about San Diego? Furthermore SDSU has a reputation of putting out decent AD’s for other top jobs. This was a no brainer decision.
All I saw was purple
Was Sterk pushed out?
I’m not sure he was pushed out the door, I think Sterk looked at the political climate in the state of Washington and looked at the troubled football program. If Wulff doesn’t win this next season, would tha ax fall on Sterk too? I think Sterk moved on prior to the ax coming down.
All I saw was purple
We'll probably never know
But it wasn’t because of Wulff. If he was pushed out it was because of the stadium renovation.
I don't believe he was pushed out
I think Sterk looked into his crystal ball and weighed the pros and cons between his current WSU job and the vacant SDSU job. Let’s be honest, the political climate in the state of Washington hasn’t been the most friendly in terms of offering public funds for athletic endevors. On top of that, I am sure Sterk has taken a beat down in regards to his first real football hire. Doba wasn’t a real football hire, he was an easy fix and sometimes athletic programs will offer the job to a tenured veteran top assistant that seldom pans out the way you want it. Wulff was Sterk’s first football hire and has taken a pounding for the decision.
Not saying that if/when Wulff gets the ax Sterk would also get fired. Yet sometimes the guy that makes the lousy hire also gets fired. Was Sterk willing to wait and see? It made perfect sense for him to vacate and take a very good job at SDSU.
All I saw was purple
It wouldn't have mattered
His contract was up in 2011 and he had to get the stadium renovation done. It didn’t happen this year. The Wulff hiring is only one thing in his tenure and he’s done many other great things while he was at WSU. He’s rebuilt the basketball program with the Bennetts and then hired Bone after. The non-revenue sports are thriving and in a much better position at this point.
He’s been there 10 years and it could just be time to move on. Nobody will really know the whole story behind it but it doesn’t matter too much
I hope this is not the beginning of something bad towards Cougar Athletics
The last two hires by by JIm Sterk have failed miserably. The Paul Wulff experiment seems like it is going no where. With the 2010 recruiting class ranking 9th or 10th in the conference and ESPN commenting that Wulff was being out recruited, it would seem Paul Wulff’s days at WSU are numbred unless there is Magical turn around in the 2010 season.
With the funding going poorly for the renovation of Martin Stadium from Alumni members, posissble lack of funding from the State on any level, and fact that Jim Sterk does not have a good working relationship with WSU president Elson Floyd. Sterk probably thought it was time to leave.
The new AD is going to have uphill battle in hiring, firing and funding for Martin Stadium renovation due to the small budget ot the Cougar Athletic Department.
Good Luck Cougar’s, because I hope this is not the beginning of something bad towards Cougar Athletics

Someone has a selective memory
The hires before were Bone and Bennett also.
The favorite is Bill Moos. If they shell out for him he could be a huge money maker. The renovation has nothing to do with athletic dept funding. We sold half the seats and needed to sell 80 percent. It isn’t far off. The new AD isn’t walking in to a bad spot with the only hot seat coach being Wulff.
Like I said, if they pull Moos we could be in a good spot.

WOW...when did WSU comeup with money to hire Moos and New Head FootballCoach.
Bad ecconomy and small budget…now WSU has the money of about 1.5 mill to sign a new AD. Hate to say it , but the renovation of Martin Stadium has lot to with the Athletic Deaprtment budget. Witha failing football program and new AD who wants to get his own New Coachesc. Where is the 3 million dollars per year or more to get both coming from?

The funding has to do with donations, not an athletic department budget
It’s separate from the day to day operations budget.
It doesn’t cost 1.5 million a year to sign a new AD, it’s money spread out over a contract. We were paying Sterk 200k a year and that now comes off the books.
I have no idea where you get 3 million per year, but that’s nothing near the figures we’d be looking at for an AD and coach. Wulff makes 600K or so, Sterk made 200K or so. It isn’t a ton of money here.
LMFAO if you think Moos is going to work for $200,000.00

....what are you talking about?
I said 200K is coming off the books, meaning that frees up 200K a year. I’m not stupid about hires here. Paying Moos 200K would mean he’s working for free. Oregon is paying him 200K a year not to work for the next 7 years and he forfeits that money by taking an AD job out west.
Come on man, I’m smarter than this and I know our athletic department pretty darn well. Moos would be paid well but we’re not talking millions of dollars a year, ADs just don’t make that money except in rare occasions. We’re also sitting on buyout money from UVa from Bennett leaving and Bone is costing quite a bit less than was budgeted for Bennett. Also, the reason Wulff wasn’t fired was because it’s known how much it would’ve cost and now won’t cost following this season. We’ve got salary money….
