The Blind Side
I just got back from vacation, spent 7 days in Palm Springs and 3 days at Disneyland and I really enjoyed wearing my Husky gear in Southern Cal!! While on the trip I read "The Blind Side", the book that became the movie about Michael Oher. Needless to say, I loved it. It is a must see for football fans, and it has a great story so your wives will like it too!
Now that the blog has quieted down for the LONG winter stretch between signing day and spring practice and I'm back in the office (meaning I have time to kill), I thought it would be a good time to discuss our offensive line. Lucky for Jake we've got a lot of starters returning, only losing Ossai from last season, which IMHO, isn't a big loss. If the line remains the same as last season our starting 5 would be (from LT - RT) Schaefer, Christine, Tolar, Kelemete, and Habben. But, I find it unlikely for it to be that simple. Kirkd mentioned on another post that he had heard rumors on dawgman that our line could look more like:
LT: Kelemete, LG: Tolar, C: Ikehara, but watch out for Porter, RG: Christine, but watch out for Kohler, RT: Schaefer, with Kohler a possibility here too
Here's my take, you've got to start with the most important position on the line, left tackle. Ideally you want a big, athletic, freak of nature to protect Jake's blind side. We have athletic (Kelemete), but I don't see anybody that is big AND athletic. I'm going to agree that Kelemete is probably the best fit, with a lot of time in the weight room he could become a very good LT.
Next on my list is center, IMO it's the next position that has the least flexibility, in other words not every linemen can snap the ball and block. Tolar did a very good job last year, but you always want the top 5 guys on the field. That being said, I see Ikehara taking over at center. We've heard coaches say great things about him, unfortunately last year was a waste due to an illness that caused him to lose weight and strength. He performed very well filling in for Tolar at the end of 2009 and I expect him to be a rising star in 2010.
IMO, Tolar is the best all around linemen we have returning, lucky for us he is an experienced guard that can fill in at center if need be. I believe he used to be left guard, so I'll plug him back in their, giving us Kelemete and Tolar on the left side with Ikehara at center.
Right Tackle should belong to Habben, but he's coming off shoulder surgery and could get some stiff competition from Schaefer. Right Guard will be the big question mark, you've got a returning starter in Christine, but a lot of potential with Kohler and Porter.
All of that being said, here's my guess/prediction on what our 2010 offensive line will look like:
LT - Kelemete, backed up by Schaefer
LG - Tolar, backed up by Wood or Porter or Kohler
C - Ikehara, backed up by Tolar
RG - Christine, backed up by Wood or Porter or Kohler
RT - Habben, backed up by Schaefer
The best part is the flexibility that should be available to the coaches, we have a few experienced backups, a lot of potential from incoming freshmen, and that's not mentioning guys who missed last year due to injury. If one or two guys like Wood, Fancher, Armelin or Shugert have a break out off season, it could add more depth to what looks like a very promising starting lineup.
I didn't mean for this to get so length, but hopefully it will give us something to chat about for awhile. GO DAWGS!

Good analysis – maybe add some depth with incoming freshmen – love our freshmen class. Not that long until spring ball – only 45 days(March 30) and counting.
Hopefully things will be become a lot more clear during Spring Practices, but the word is Habben had shoulder surgery and is currently very questionable. If he’s healthy, he’s probably one of our 5 best linemen, but at this point it sounds like he may be hobbled.
Kelemete did quite well for a true sophomore in his first year on the offensive side of the ball. Very athletic, and probably a pretty good LT candidate with a little more bulk & strength.
Tolar has the attitude you like and probably made the most impressive physical transformation of all the linemen last year. He provides nice options with his ability to play C, but he seems better suited to G.
Ikehara has drawn raves since he arrived and the line played very well against Cal, which also happened to be his first start. If he’s fully over his illness and has been able to build back good weight and get stronger, he’s probably the best C on the team, at least until the freshmen arrive.
Christine is a great story, but I’d be surprised if one of the freshmen doesn’t end up bumping him out of the top-5.
Schaefer did OK, which is just fine for a RS-Fr. Hopefully he continues to get stronger and learn the system.
Fancher seems to have a lot of potential, but his injury history is scary – at this point I don’t think you can count on him.
Wood managed to earn starting time after Christine went down, but I’d be quite surprised if he proved to be one of our top-5 guys.
Armelin and Shugart seem like lost causes, but maybe this is the year they finally make a move. I wouldn’t count on it though.
I think there’s ample opportunity for Kohler and Porter to come in and immediately compete for starting spots, and I wouldn’t sleep on Tanigawa either. Criste probably needs a little more seasoning. Hatchie and Riva need a year in the weight room, and Atoe is a project that needs time.
I don't see any freshmen threatening Ikehara
I guess we won’t know for sure until we see him in spring practices, but as long as he has remained healthy and has been doing normal work in the weight room, Ikehara should be a lock to start. I just don’t see any 18/19 year olds being ready to take over at center.
Schaefer did OK at LT, not exactly the easiest position on the o-line, I’m willing to bet he does well at RT.
I see Porter and Kohler coming in and being solid backups, but barring an injury, I don’t see them starting.

Well, Schaefer may end up being a good, high-level Pac-10 quality lineman, but he’s not there yet. Frankly, most of our guys aren’t there yet. Doesn’t mean he won’t get there, but that’s the standard we should be aspiring to. I’m not convinced that he’s currently better than Kohler, or that Kohler can’t surpass him at some point during the season.
Ikehara is likely to be the guy at C, but Porter is a guy that Cozzetto thinks could be a good C too. Even before his illness, Ikehara was a tad undersized. I doubt Porter or Tanigawa beat him out, but it wouldn’t be a complete shock.
That about sums it up.
bq.Frankly, most of our guys aren’t there yet.
Couldn’t agree more, if our pass blocking was better during the middle part of last season we would have gone to a bowl game. I’m hopeful that another off season with Ivan the Terrible will get these guys up to PAC10 standards. IF they do, watch out, a balanced attack with Jake Locker and Chris Polk behind a solid PAC10 line could be quite dangerous.

My Take
Just after reading everything you posted Lear, my first thought was “with all these guys coming back, we appear to still have enough talent coming in to push our starters”. That is going to make all these guys better. Let’s not forget there are some other guys on the roster who may surprise everyone and push into the two deeps. I believe this class coming in has a great mix of immediate impact guys and guys like Atoe who could be monsters down the road. All in all I like the mix of all of the things that are going on in the trenches. GO DAWGS!!

Read that book last year and it was amazing.
The way he writes the story about Michael Oher is great but the evolution of the LT position is a truly amazing story.
UW O-Line will sort its self out during spring but I would not cross my fingers about any freshmen starting next year. Rarely is an 18 year old kid ready for O-Line and its in our best interest going forward that they get the opportunity to red shirt. You will probably see them dress but only play if absolutely necessary.
The Blind Side
I’d heard about the movie, finally got around to seeing it and absolutely loved it. Now I wonder why I didn’t see it sooner.
I was also really surprised by the book, especially the chapters like you mention where the author leaves the story and just writes about the evolution of the game and position. Definitely a must read for football fans.

Maybe not...
…start but could totally see a couple in the two deep and getting some playing time.
