Official Recruiting Thread

Since our Duck friends decided to blow up The Monday Morning Wash lets start a new recruiting thread that is exclusive to Husky recruiting....anything else gets deleted.

A couple of quick notes:

Lawrence Lagafuiana has picked Washington over Hawaii and will be a Husky. He was thinking Hawaii after his visit but decided UW was the best place for him after he had slept on it.

Kona Schwenke did not commit to Notre Dame and the Washington coaches cancelled his visit because the way the flights would have worked out would have meant that he would have only been able to spend around 90 minutes on campus Sunday.

Washington still has a scholarship open for Schwenke and he could possibly visit next weekend. So it looks like Schwenke will decide between UW and Notre Dame. Both schools may end up waiting a week to find out what will happen.

Kerifi Taula was all about Arizona last night but expect some more flip flops between now and signing day.

Update - James Atoe is a Dawg

OT James Atoe has decided to commit to the University of Washington. The 6'7 325 behemoth from the Dalles may be here as soon as this summer if there is room. If they run out of space he will ber here winter of 2011. Atoe is a kid that visited UW for the rising stars camp last summer where he caught the eye of the coaches. The thing that Cozzetto likes about his is his footwork. I guess the coach went to watch one of his basketball games and thought he had potential. James isn't a big name recruit but you can't coach the size he has...it will be interesting to wtch him develop at Montlake.

Tuesday

It is finally here...the last working day of the recruiting season!

Today is the last day that coaches can interact with the players on the phone before they start faxing in their letters of intent on Wednesday morning. Expect quite a few flip flops and final decisions today as we head into crunch time. As these items pop up I will be posting them here in the blog so stay tuned!

Oregon apparently is losing a couple of huge in state targets to other schools. Four-star defensive end Gabe King is headed to California according the Contra Costa-Times. The Ducks also are apparently out of the running for DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa, who attends Portland's David Douglas High School according to Greg Biggins of ESPN.

Jeremy Ioane will pick between Notre Dame, UW, and Boise State on Wednesday. He has letters from all three schools and will pick the winner when he wakes up on Wednesday morning.

Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times has some nice background on future Husky LB Garret Gilliland.

Update - Cooper Pelleur is a Dawg

We heard rumblings last night that the Huskies might offer DE Cooper Pelleur from Skyline and those rumblings turned out to be true this morning.  Cooper is 6'4 235 lbs and will either play SAM or DE at Washington. He picks up the spot that was left open when Alejandro Maldonado shifted gears and headed to Oregon. Cooper was almost signed and delivered to Chris Tormey over at Hawaii but with the last minute offer he is headed to his dream school. Cooper has a lot of upside and I think it is a solid pick up for Washington.

Even with the signings of Pelleur and Atoe the Huskies have room for 3-4 more based on the numbers. Not sure if they will sign that many more but lets say if Taula, Scwenke, Shirley, and Parker all said yes they would find room for them.

Keeping an eye on Schwenke right now. The Notre Dame coaches may pressure him to sign and not wait till next week. He wants to visit Washington this weekend but ND may not be that patient. We should know more about that later this evening.

Sean Parker has gone underground and nobody knows what he is thinking right now. He did rave earlier about his trip to Washington and he knows he can play early for the Huskies. Parker is a very good student and Washington also has the type of academics he is looking for.

Experts are speculating that Ricky Heimuli will decide between UCLA and Utah. The speculation is he likes Norm Chow which to me means little since he is a defensive tackle.

Heard a story that it was down to USC and Miami for Shirley but don't know how valid that one really is because he isn't really taking.

Hearing that Hayes Pullard is heading to USC.

We will post more updates here as they are confirmed.

Defense!!!

Wow. It looks like the quality of the defensive line is going to be right up there with the offensive line for this class. If we get Heimuli or Schwenke or Taula, the possibilities are pretty fun to think about. I figure they can add three more guys comfortably and four or five uncomfortably — if we get that lucky.

by Scott Frost on Feb 1, 2010 3:21 PM PST reply actions

I wouldn't count my chickens

This is an exceptional year for high pressure recruiting. It has been awhile since it has been like this. Getting Pete Carroll out of the way and the addition of these young hungry coaches has made it a free for all.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2010 3:23 PM PST reply actions

Watching recruiting is more fun

now that I’ve learned not to get excited about anything until after LOI day.
If they come, they come, if they decide to go to the Lane County Zoo, I lose no sleep over it.
You never know on most of these guys how they will turn out until 2 or 3 years down the road.

by T9ODawg on Feb 1, 2010 3:32 PM PST reply actions

Yawn

I know you don’t waste a lot of energy on the recruiting chase. I do think this is going to be a very special class.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2010 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

we haven’t seen a class like this, ever, IMHO.

I’m not going to get spun up because some changes their mind, etc.

Te'o

Any news on Shiloah Te’o? Is he still a possible transfer? I haven’t heard anything about him and I can’t find anything online.

by Scott Frost on Feb 1, 2010 3:44 PM PST reply actions

Only a "slighting referrence" of him from Salt Lake City ....

I saw a not so loving line about him in the Kona Schwenke story …written a couple of days ago…just hinting his being a byu bust? (whatever that means?broke team rule?) Either way,it’s gonna get wild till wednesday’s over! Expect some fireworks! flip-flops! and other fun!

by glider on Feb 1, 2010 4:02 PM PST up reply actions

Not likely

Probably no room and he would have to walk on. Wouldn’t count on him.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2010 4:03 PM PST up reply actions

Atoe is in

He’ll be a greyshirt, but the future of the offensive line is looking great. Price and Montana must be smiling.

by Scott Frost on Feb 1, 2010 4:05 PM PST reply actions

Seeing the other offers listed for Atoe, I’m having a hard time getting too excited about him. Hopefully I’m wrong and he turns into a good one, but I’m skeptical.

by kirkd on Feb 1, 2010 4:16 PM PST up reply actions

Kirk I think they took a flyer on him after seeing him in camp this summer. Obviously with six OL already on baord they didn’t need another one in this class but there must have been something they thought they could develop over time. He has great size and perhaps after two years under Ivan in the weight room you have something special.

At the very least it is another widebody to practice against.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2010 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, clearly the staff thinks there’s potential there. Hopefully they’re right. And hopefully taking a flier on him as a greyshirt doesn’t mean they miss out on better prospects next year.

Maybe it’s a more conditional offer than we know – maybe the staff will be monitoring his progress before they commit to offering him a scholarship.

by kirkd on Feb 1, 2010 4:24 PM PST up reply actions

If they saw him in camp...

…they got a good look at him. That kind of up close evaluation is critical in recruiting. GO DAWGS!!

Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!

by dawgfan22 on Feb 1, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

So after checking my roster spreadsheet, I’m less concerned – we currently are slated to graduate 24 guys after next season, and you can generally expect 2+ guys to leave the program every year, so plenty of room to take a flier on Atoe.

by kirkd on Feb 1, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

ZERO FRESHMEN OL 2009

We are recruiting for this year and last year. Maybe three play next year and the rest redshirt. In future years we redshirt all four or five OL and are back to normal. Fifth year seniors on the O Line sounds like a winner.

I can only see Porter and Kohler playing this season…that is also a pretty big if…always best to RS your big guys.

...and Donald Butler?

Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!

by dawgfan22 on Feb 1, 2010 9:21 PM PST up reply actions

I’ll see your Mason Foster and Donald Butler and raise you Morgan Rosborough, Matt Sedillo, Mark Armelin & Luther Leonard.

Also, let’s keep in mind that Butler committed in September, which in 2006 was still considered early in the process. He would’ve had other offers had he not committed to the UW and told other schools not to bother. Arizona for sure would’ve offered, and both Cal and Oregon were interested in him.

Foster is a better example, but he committed in early December rather than days before Signing Day, and he had a trip lined up to Colorado before he committed to the UW, so he likely would’ve had an offer from the Buffs.

You can find lots of examples of under the radar recruits that turn out to be productive players. But you can also find a lot more examples of those recruits not turning into to much of anything.

by kirkd on Feb 2, 2010 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

just sayin ...

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

by Gekko Mojo on Feb 2, 2010 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

What, that he could turn out to be a good one? Sure, that’s certainly possible. And now that I see that next year’s class will have plenty of room, I don’t have much of an issue with the staff taking a flier on Atoe as a greyshirt.

If it were a small class size, then I’d be more concerned. But then again, if it were a small class size, maybe Sark wouldn’t have offered him…

by kirkd on Feb 2, 2010 6:11 PM PST up reply actions

Jeremy Ioane

He isn’t going to make an official commitment before he signs. He has letters of intent from Boise, Notre Dame, and UW. He will fax one of them in on Wednesday. Not sure exactly what that means because I thought he was shoe in for Notre Dame after visiting this past weekend.

The thing about this kid is he has been very deliberate in how he has approached the entire process. Seems to be taking his time to make sure he makes the right decision.

The Seattle Area

has seemed attractive to Oceanian American football players. Manu Tuiasosopo came here from UCLA to join the Seahawks in 1979, and are we ever glad he did! Maybe it’s because our warm winds blow in from Hawaii, and they follow them.

Expect to Win!!!

We certainly have a good-sized Poly community in the Seattle area, but we’re not the only ones. Utah in general and the SLC area in particular have a sizable community, and there are plenty in SoCal too.

But yeah, I’m glad Manu settled here and that the Hawaiian/Poly pipeline has been flowing for decades now to the UW, and that Sark and his staff seem to be taking that pipeline up a notch.

Atoe plays basketball?

I thought Robert “Tractor” Traylor was big at 275 pounds. A 325 pound kid playing ball against high school kids just isn’t fair. I wanna know what his vertical is

BB SCHOLIE

Atoe, give him a BB scholarship. The BB program could sure use him this year.

by Purpledawg on Feb 1, 2010 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

Offers...

…as precious a scholarships are I suspect that the coaches see something they can develope in Atoe. If he fails after getting here he could always be asked to move on clearing room for another player later. High risk high reward type player…probably worth it to him too.

by Dawgs71 on Feb 1, 2010 10:05 PM PST reply actions

working man's lineman UW style

the 2-3 stars come in with a working mans attitude. They know nothing is going to be handed them where the 5-stars expect the gold carpet treatment.
If he has the footwork and stamina to play BB I can almost guarantee he will make it. A diamond in the rough. That first move needs to be explosive.

by Purpledawg on Feb 1, 2010 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

The other thing is...

…the kid lives in the Dalles. If some of you aren’t familiar with it it’s a small town/city in Oregon but it’s probably like living on the dark side of the moon as far as exposure goes. When a kid attends the schools (UWs) camp, the coaches get a good look at him in every way and they know what they’re getting.

The coaches saw potential and that is why they offered…you can’t teach that type of size. The fact that a guy that big is playing basketball is impressive.

NEGATIVES

don’t get us anywhere. The opposition reads this blog and can use these comments against us. I will trust Holt made a very good decision for the future on the Dawg O Line. Clearing out players is not a good way to go and should not be necessary if the coaches do their job.

I wouldn’t even venture to say that Oregon is being out recrutied by Washington. The Ducks have a great class lined up.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 2, 2010 7:48 AM PST up reply actions

Cooper Pelleur? Have the huskies given up on Scott Crichton? He is from the State and in the latest ranking he had really moved up and would be a better prospect than Pelleur plus taking him from OSU would be a nice little coup for the Huskies.

by lorenzothedog on Feb 2, 2010 7:28 AM PST reply actions

As of this morning I don’t think they are in on either Chrichton or Pelleur.

The Pelleur thing came from the Hawaii Scout site and it seems to be just a rumor that got out of hand.

As far as Chrichton goes since he has not visited I assume he will sign with Oregon State Wednesday morning.

But yet they don’t list him as a commit yet. And, they mention that his offer was contingent on someone else who might be backing out… Any thoughts or rumors on who that might be??? Can’t wait for tomorrow so we can get all of this speculation and uncertainty behind us!

by Dawglawman on Feb 2, 2010 12:45 PM PST reply actions

Hard to know who the coaches were alluding too, especially when you consider that they are still over the 85 man limit. Obviously they have a much better idea of exactly what’s happening than we do – which recruits they suspect may not qualify, which ones they think they can greyshirt, which current players they think might leave, which recruiting targets may be eliminating the Huskies. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow (and longer if Schwenke doesn’t sign with Notre Dame).

Totally content if everybody puts pen to paper

If we don’t have any L.O.I. surprises tomorrow I am with out doubt satisfied with this class. We’ve acquired O line talent w/ depth, D line talent w/ depth, numerous skill players to fill up a roster, and key secondary personnel.

Not to mention but we landed a few kids that have the drive to compete and will push others to compete i.e. Atoe, Pulluer, and Gilliland. I like these guys and I think bringing in these 3 guys to compete is the reason they were brought in.

Yet I am still optimistic that we may have a few surprises tomorrow, but if it closes with what we’ve got- I am satisfied.
