The Huskies will be allowed 15 practices leading up to the Holiday Bowl game. The plan is for eight of them to be in Seattle and the other seven in San Diego. The Huskies are scheduled to hit the field this weekend after taking some time off after the Apple Cup win, then taking more time off allowing players to prepare for fall quarter's final exams. The team will arrive in San Diego on Dec 23rd.
Even though the team is taking a little time off over the next two weeks the coaching staff will be extremely busy recruiting. We expect recruiting news to pick up quite a bit as the coaches spread out all over the West making in home visits. No real word yet on when they will be hosting on campus visits yet.
Recruiting News
Not much to report on this week except that DE Brent Williams will no longer be a Husky. Williams was recruited last year and ended up grayshirting to put on some size this season. He reportedly continued living in Seattle while he was working at getting bigger. In an interview with Scout earlier this week he said that he was getting his release from UW and will be attending school elsewhere in January. The indications are that the coaching staff cooled on him for one reason or another. One reason I envision is weight-related, but the other is likely Josh Shirley's surprise arrival in late August.
Chip Kelly to Florida?
Wouldn't that be nice? Don't count on it happening. Chip Kelly is likely very happy where he is at and contractually it would be a nightmare for him to move anywhere according to Ted Miller. Is Florida really a step up from Oregon anyway at this point?
Heading to San Diego?
According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times Alaska Airlines has opened up capacity more seats to San Diego by adding larger planes to the route. Those seats will go fast so you better jump on it if you want to go.
One thing that is missing from the past is charter flights to the bowl game. In the old days it was a given that Washington was going to be somewhere during the holidays so those arrangements were made months in advance.
A couple of other options to take a look at are Amtrak and simply driving down the coast if you have the time.
Arizona loses a couple of coaches to Colorado
Co-defensive coordinator Greg Brown and defensive tackles coach Mike Tuiasosopo are headed to Boulder to join new head coach Jon Embree's staff. According to sources they will be hitting the recruiting trail immediately. Tuiasosopo is a monster recruiter and was a big part of the rebuilding process at Arizona. Colorado will be hitting SoCal hard in the future and Mike is a good one to pick to help lead the effort.
Nebraska DUI
Nebraska DT Baker Steinkuhler was suspended from the team after getting a DUI. Steinkuhler is a pretty good player so his loss will be felt during the bowl game.
What I learned at Agricultural school
Two members of the WSU football team were kicked out of school after local law enforcement found out that they were growing pot in their rental house. Jamal Atofau and Andre Barrington were dismissed by Coach Wulff earlier this week.

Give Bo credit for suspending his DT.
Kelly would never have had the guts to do so.
As for UF vs UO – that’s not a serious question, is it? Florida is a top 5 job at a loaded university in the SEC that has a self contained recruiting environment. It is a better job than Oregon by a very long shot.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Factor in a few other things...
Like where you and your family has to live to start with.

I'm missing your point on this.
…because Florida has all the advantages:
. better Athletic program
. SEC revenues
. more money available to pay a coach
. better recruiting
. better lifestyle (Florida AND no state income taxes)
. more prestige
Its not even close between Florida and most programs, including Oregon.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
also, don't forget that Oregon returns the fewest starters next year ...
… this run that they are on might have a finite lifespan, especially when you need to go in and rebuild an already average front seven next year.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
normally I would agree with that but.....
they substitute liberally on both sides of the ball in that system. The quacks second string gets a ton of reps. Unfortunately I don’t see them missing much of a beat in terms of personnel next season. We just need defenses to figure that offense out and contain them.
I'd rather bark when I talk than waddle when I walk.

yep
Returning starters is a little less important with Oregon considering how liberally they substitute players during their games. I don’t see Oregon dropping off much, if at all on offense. The biggest issue there is finding a new go-to WR to replace Maehl.
Where they might take a little more of a blow is on defense where they lose 5 of their front 7 (including DE Rowe, MLB Matthews and WLB Paysinger) and one of their starting CBs (though they have Harris waiting to take over).
Still, the Ducks are going to be the consensus favorites to win the conference again and a threat to go undefeated.
haha - I didn't say that they would be good ... but undefeated and NC contenders seems like a reach
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
But they'd be very strong candidates for Rose Bowl contention.
Nothing wrong with that.

Oregon's got a lot more job security.
Kelly’s probably set for life there, whereas he wouldn’t be at Florida. Not saying it overrides all those other factors, but it’s definitely something to consider.
Job security
What is your earning potential staying at one place for the rest of your professional life opposed to going to a school where you can be fired for going 9-3 a couple of years in a row?
I think the quality of your life would be better in Eugene than in a presser cooker school in the SEC…just my take.

For the regular Joe
This is probably true. But most these coaches have ego’s that, 1. got them to where they are and 2. makes them always look for something more prestigious.
I don't think coaches who make appearances in NC ever have to worry about not getting a job if they want one.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
That team is heading to the Wac Conference?
Why do canadians stick together? The same reason why Chris Horodecki turned his body and face around in his first WEC fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

I think howard schnellenberger(coached university of miami's first ncaa championship) did the same thing with florida atlantic.
i think that is true. off the top of my head.

just sayin'...
Yes, definitely the exception to the rule. Just giving you a hard time for making an absolute statement.
i know. i can take it when smarter people poke holes in my always flawed arguments.

All true (except maybe lifestyle - ever been to Gainesville?)
Kelly’s got a pretty good deal going, though. With USC sliding, he’s got Oregon in position to be the program on the West Coast. If he thinks he’s got the talent in the program, and continue to bring it in, being the big fish in a smaller pond might have more appeal than going to program like Florida and conference like the SEC, that will simply chew you up and spit you out.
Are you talking Chip Kelly?
He booted the best player on last year’s squad for essentially lying… Why bring Chip into it? Don’t understand.
i just wanted to prove duck fans monitor the blog

Another positive
Only 3 (or 4) other teams in the Pac-10 are even getting those extra practices this year. We do play all three of them next year though (and Utah).
DJ complained in the 80s
that his non-bowl team was the squad that really needed those extra practices. Anxious to see what new recruts they come up with.
Love the ag line; at least these guys were learning a real world skill and not wasting time on a worthless degree.
Recruiting
We really need to add 2 more DT’s to this class. With two seniors next year and Tokalahi’s return questionable we are going to be paper thin.
One – Ta’Amu, Tokalahi, Lagafuina
Three – Thompson, Robinson, Potoae
Commits – Tupou, Brown

visiting soon
Sounds like the coaches are bringing in all the local recruits this weekend – hopefully that will be the push needed to get Shelton to commit. And Nowicki may come up as well – would love to get him in this OL class.
i'm not a recruiting expert...
but from the photos i’ve seen, he looks like he’s at least 2-3 years away from making an impact in d-1 football
He's blue chip
All DT’s shouldn’t be contributing until their RS Soph. year anyway. That said, he’d slide right at or above Lagafuiana’s spot on next years roster. He’s a beast of a kid, and I feel like people are minimizing his abilities ever since he named Oregon his leader. He’s got ability for days.
On another note, besides Moala (and he’s not even a lock), name one other west coast DT who can contribute as a frosh.
it's just kind of a gut feeling i've had for a while
i don’t dispute the high grades he has from recruiters, but he just doesn’t quite pass the eyeball test. maybe because he looks so young and his body is nowhere near d-1 shape. i just think it will take quite a bit of conditioning before he can play
Fair enough
I just don’t think Linemen are ever really ready to make an “impact” as a frosh. Clowney comes to mind this year, but he’s the consensus #1 player, and may not even thrive as a frosh.
Shelton strikes me as WA’s version of Antwan Woods. They both carry alot of baby fat still but the technique and frame is there.
Also, that might be the most ringing endorsement of Ivan I've heard
How long has it been since our current depth makes a top 20 DT look small?
Rahmel Dockery
I know some of you might be tired of hearing this, but this kid is a beast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCuUtsu1DMo.
Watch his video and tell me your not impressed.
What about his catch were he went up and caught a pass over Kasen william’s on 7 on 7 drills.
I'm impressed
He’s clearly an elite athlete…with sub par size. He’s good, but high school is a different animal, and his ceiling isn’t a high as someone like Kasen.
Speaking of Kasen, that was a nice catch, and he earned the position with a good route, but it was hardly “over” him.

Size problems make me sad :(
There was a guy at my high school, a grade ahead of me – fastest white guy I’ve ever seen. The entire highlight film that year was basically just short passes to him where he’d dodge everyone and score, medium passes where he’d dodge a couple people and score, and long passes where he’d already burned the DBs so he didn’t need to dodge anyone to score. Amazing talent – the problem was that he was 5’6", maybe 5’7" on his best day. Ended up at…Eastern Montana, I think? Somewhere in Montana, any. I think he had pretty much every receiving record there by his junior year.
I had another buddy who was amazing at the HS level – defensive MVP and all-conference on offense – but he was too small for line and too slow for LB. Ended up walking on at WSU and bulking up enough to grab the backup center spot, where he just played his last game.
Washington has not offered him a scholarship, and I don't think they've even had him in for an unofficial visit.
There’s a reason that schools like Hawaii and Idaho are one of the few to have offered him a scholarship; namely, his size.

they've talked with him though
And it sounds like they are close to offering, probably depending on what happens with guys higher on their list.
So thats why we didn't recruit Atofau...
I remember an article in the Seattle Times about what a great player Atofau was, and how he had his feelings hurt that UW wasn’t recruiting him very hard. Well, he was simply destined to be a Coug.
This may be the second or third time Atofau has been in trouble since he arrived at WSU last summer.

are you high
Yes! florida is a step up from oregon its a step up from 99% of the schools in the NCAA
is this sarcasm?
A “joke” in the ’90’s? You mean the decade where they went 102-22, won a National Championship and never won fewer than 9 games in a season?
Can you believe that?
22 loses in one decade?? What a bunch of losers!

I'm pretty sure Phil Knight owns the rights to Chip Kelly's soul
He can’t leave.
Does T. Boone Pickens own Mike Gundy's soul?. He is 42, and he is a man.

I'll be so depressed when I turn forty-one next week
No longer will I be able to scream that in the backyard while drinking and really believe it, you know?
I understand, kind of.
I’m only 25, but I have my first kid on the way, and I’m kind of pumped to be able to yell that. Undoubtedly I’ll have a few too many after a Husky loss in 2022, and the neighbor will threaten at my pain in the ass son for damaging his siding with golf balls. Maybe I’ll yell that at my wife when she punishes him? The versatility of that rant is astounding.
I'm throwing the BS flag
I’m 60+, way more on the +, and I still scream…“Make the effing tackle” and I believe it.
If that one makes you uncomfortable, you can still use Dan Hawkins'.
“It’s Division One football, brother! It’s the Big 12! It ain’t intermurals!”
Well, I guess it actually isn’t the Big 12 anymore, so maybe that one isn’t any better….
