FB/Ath Dezden Petty told Scout today that he committed to Washington over the weekend. Petty committed to San Diego State earlier but jumped at the offer from Washington. The coaches told him they envision the 6'2 212 banger as a FB in the mold of UC's Stanley Havili. Petty is the 19th known commitment for the 2011 class.
Steve Sarkisian has been looking for a jumbo back ever since he took the job at Washington. Melvin Davis and Elijah Penny were recruited over the last two years but were unable to qualify. Experts say that Petty is a steal and he has better potential than the later two. Even more importantly he is a qualifier.
Petty is a jumbo athlete who was getting recruited on either side of the ball in college. A thick, well-built prospect with good height and close to ideal measurables for a major level fullback or inside linebacker.
As a projected linebacker he has some speed limitations but closes with above average burst in the short-area. Straight-lined for the most part but shows he can open and turn and get depth in coverage. Best asset is pursuing downhill, attacking vertically on the outside and making production near the line of scrimmage.
We like his potential total package at fullback. Shows he can catch the ball out of the backfield, get North as runner with solid burst and stalemate defenders as a blocker. Will need a bit of technical polish but the measurables, toughness and physical tools are there to develop. Overall, Petty is good, hard nosed football player without a lot of flash to his game but will produce.
