Bellotti withdraws from Colorado job consideration
Interesting news out of Boulder as Mike Bellotti visited with Colorado officials but then decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the Buffs job, saying he's decided to not pursue any job for 2011.
Link here: http://www.denverpost.com/colleges/ci_16674053
He cites the standard family concerns regarding his son still being in High School and being able to attend basketball games and such. I'm sure there's more to it than that though. Makes you wonder - maybe Iron Mike is positioning himself for a possible job at UCLA for 2012? Wouldn't that be rich - Mike taking over for Neuheisel. You'd have to figure Bellotti would get the Bruins rolling again (finally?), and it might be kind of scary to see what he could do with the raw talent that Neuheisel has recruited there.
I also found this little bit to be really interesting:
The candidates considered on athletic director Mike Bohn's "A" list are Air Force's Troy Calhoun, Louisiana State's Les Miles and former Colorado coach Bill McCartney.
Les Miles? How in the heck does Colorado think they could lure Les Miles?

Les Miles
Who do they think they’re fooling? We have a better chance of electing a GOP for Governor in King County than they have of hiring Les Miles and we all know Kingco will never vote that way.
That's got to be the best analogy possible!
There is only one way they can get Les Miles, throw so much money at him he can’t say no. The only question is how much would that be? I’m guessing 7-10 million per year. Last time I checked, there is no way in hell Colorado has that type of money.

CU believes the natural beauty of Boulder
is enough to attract coaches and players. Big money for facilities or coaches is not part of the current game plane; but just like King County must eventually stop wasting money, maybe the Bufs will start spending some for athletics.
I've been to Boulder
I’ll take the natural beauty of the PNW any day, all day over Colorado and the ocean in Colorado leaves something to be desired….it’s way too far to the beach.
I lived in the Denver area for a year…headed back to the coast as soon as I could.
not true.
… Les is not very popular among the fan base and there has been much speculation that he, himself, wants out. Don’t you guys listen to Finebaum? If he could parlay his LSU success into a long-term deal at Colorado, I wouldn’t consider that impossible. More likely he waits for a more prestigious Big 10 job to open.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
I don't listen to Finebaum.
Because I have all my teeth.
Money isn't everything
I just moved to Denver from Baton Rouge in September, and I’ll tell you what: the grass in Colorado is far tastier than the grass down there. But it’s the Buffs who need to lay off of it. Miles didn’t sniff at Michigan’s last vacancy. He might have changed his mind in the meantime about LSU (although he’s not too terribly sane, so why would he have) but between money and recruiting I can’t see him tempted in the least. If anything, he’s waiting in the wings for Michigan to open up again. But Colorado? Seriously?
This is what happens when you legalize weed . . . .
Oh please please please let it be McCartney2
No one would ever have to worry about CU for 5 years at least.
McCartney
I could see them bringing in McCartney mostly as a mentor to a younger coach they like that has no head coaching experience – like, say, Eric Bienemy, a former player under McCartney. Make it kind of like a Dick Bennett deal where McCartney is brought in for a limited time to mentor a designated replacement.
kirk, the only problem with those designated succesion models
is the person in charge rarely wants to leave the limelight. Other than Dick Bennett, who turned it over to Tony, and maybe the Knights , and there is nepotism involved, succesion plans haven’t worked so far. Bowden finally being forced out, and Muschamp has been waiting a long time now. Didn’t Ferentz also get tired of waiting at Kansas St, might be hazy on that one?
Plus I think the recruiting and game have passed McCartney by. Second comings at schools also haven’t worked well. Walsh, Robinson etc.
Chris Ault at Nevada
is in his third stint as head coach, this time with his newly invented “pistol”, apparently the new rage.
It looks like it did work out for Oregon, though.
He was only five-foot-three but girls could not resist his stare... Chip Kelly never got called an asshole.
Ya, sort of.
It works when you force out the old coach and the old AD. I doubt Bellotti is happy with the way it “worked out” for Oregon.

I think Neuheiesl is out after this season
Ucla should be recruiting itself. And with both Rick and Norm Chow there, their is no excuse for the poor performance at QB. I realize they’ve had injured QBs, but with those two guys coaching QBs, they should be able to find somebody to make the offense go and haven’t.
If Ucla loses to USC, I think Rick will be fired. Ucla should be a lot better then what Rick has put on the field.

Keep in mind that UCLA's quarterbacks are not very good.

Exactly
Not very good. Both Rick and Chow are well known as QB gurus and the QBs they are coaching ar laughingly awful. With Neuheisel and Chow coming in, QBing was suppose to be the staple postion at Ucla.
If Rick is retained it will be because they owe too much money on his contract and can’t afford to fire him, I’ll agree with that. The product is not what the Bruin brass thought they were getting with Rick. His teams are bad and the QBing is awful. Rick has never had to build a program from the ground up. He’s always taken over programs where the foundation was already established. Am I surprised that Rick has been a failure in Westwood? He didn’t build Colorado and didn’t build Washington. Rather he ran both into the ground. Rick is all name, nothing more.
All I saw was purple
Chow
I think Chow is mailing it in at this point in his career. Neuheisel might have to strongly consider asking Chow to “retire”.
Interesting article today in LA
Chow signed a two year contract extension over the summer…so if they want to fire him they need to come up with some cash.

Or perhaps because a rebuilding effort takes time, and it is difficult to go from coach to coach and lure a new “great coach” in after several cycles of crappy coaching and crappy performance, so maybe, just maybe, they stay the course a little longer and see what they can get out of him long term.
He hasn’t “NOT” earned more time, it isn’t like they’re doing worse than they were before he came on.

He went to a bowl
That usually gives you an extra year. However you can see the wheels coming off this season.

Crazi, both Rick and Dennis will get at least one more year.
The only coaching vacancies I see besides Colorado are possibly WSU, only due to recent silence by Moos, and Stanford, if Harbaugh goes somewhere bigger, better.
Considering that Stanford has invested what they have in the football program, and with the their incoming recruiting class for next year, which will be the second consecutive year where they have one of the nation's best classes
I have a hard time seeing Harbaugh leaving any time soon. If he were to go to a bigger job, II imagine that it would have to be to a place where the money is too great for someone such as himself to say “no” to, and where the recruiting practically does itself.

Insurance policy for the school
That’s all those contract extensions are about. It’s all about the buyout.
All I saw was purple
Or the fact that they like the coach, and want to pay him to stick around, so they pay him enough that he might...

Stanford is not exactly a destination school for big time football coaches
And Stanford realizes they have to offer an extension for two reasons:
1) Yes, because they like their football coach.
2) Because if a school persues Harbough and he leaves, Stanford would like a nice buyout so they have enough money to lure in another quality coach.
I haven’t seen the numbers, but I’m willing to bet the contract has a large buyout clause stapled to it.
All I saw was purple
that matters little
If a big-time program – like, say, Michigan – were to come calling, the Stanford buyout is not going to stop them. And it certainly won’t stop an NFL team from ponying up.
Harbaugh is frustrated at the lack of passion in the fan base down in Palo Alto. A 10-1 team that is top-10, possibly top-5 material and they are averaging just over 40K per game, or 81% capacity in a newly rebuilt stadium? As much as he loves representing a school like Stanford, he’s a highly driven competitor and he’s going to go where those around him share his passion. He’s not long for Stanford. Whether it’s this off-season or next, he’s going to elsewhere sooner rather than later.
The dispute isn't that it wouldn't stop a team like Michigan from pursuing Harbaugh.
It’s that it might stop Harbaugh from biting on the offer. He’s getting paid pretty damn good, and he (and his staff) are doing great in the recruiting department; essentially he’s in a really good situation, so I imagine it would have to take an offer he can’t refuse to make him leave Stanford.
What evidence is there that Harbaugh is likely to leave Stanford sooner rather than later?

He's a hot commodity
You strike while the iron is hot, and his iron is as hot as it’s likely going to get. I have my doubts that Harbaugh is making more than Sark, and he lives in one of the most expensive parts of the country. I really doubt Michigan would have a hard time significantly raising his pay. And an NFL team would blow away his current salary.
Harbaugh has made it well-known he’s not thrilled with the lack of fan support at Stanford, and he’s also known to covet coaching in the NFL like his brother.
I understand what you're saying, but that does nothing to suggest that Harbaugh is leaving Stanford sooner rather than later.

Irrelevant. The fact that Dallas, Minn and SF will be waving PC $?
Relevant. As is the fact that Stanford can’t sell out their little stadium.

Neuheisel won't be out
It is a complete certainty that he will be the head coach at UCLA next season. UCLA isn’t going to fire Rick because they can’t afford it. I am pretty sure you see Rick at UCLA for at least two more years.

UCLA
I agree that the finances dictate Neuheisel will be back next year. I’m not as certain about 2012 though. Fan frustration there is high, and if they can’t figure out the QB situation next year and get some semblance of a passing game going, they will probably struggle again next year to get to a minor bowl, and Guerrero might not have a choice but to act. Especially if Bellotti is out there waiting in the wings.
Rumor Mill
… So it is apparently being speculated that RRod may not last past this weekend at Mich and, according to a friend of mine tied into the Mich alum community, this depends on large part on whether or not Harbaugh responds favorably to back channel overtures. Big time alums are referring to Harbaugh as their “white knight”. Stay tuned.

Stanford is not a destination school for football coaches
Why am I not surprised by this? Looks like Stanford will be collecting on that buy out clause as mentioned above.
All I saw was purple
Stanford's not a destination for (the bestest of the bestest!) football coaches?
Then what was Ty Willingham doing there? Tell me that!
Speaking of Ty, they should hire him at Colorado. They gave us Neweasel: it would be only fitting if they landed Mister Personality now that we’re done with him. He’s just what those dirty hippies need to get them off the pipe.
Just kidding, Colorado. ;)
Go Buffs!
