SB Nation Seattle Editor's Pick
Open Letter to Jake Locker
Dear Jake,
I bet you didn't see this coming when you committed to the University of Washington all those years ago. On the day that you fulfilled one of your earliest childhood dreams, you were likely thinking about the education that you were going to receive, the opportunities your friends and family were going to have to see you play, the relationships that you were going to form with your teammates, and being part of the restoration of a tattered UW program that you have loved since your earliest days.
What did you get?
Through no fault of your own, you stumbled into the wake of one of the greatest organizational mistakes ever made in the history of UW Athletics. Without your consent, you were branded as the face of a mismanaged enterprise and labeled as the savior of a program that grown men with experience and salaries should have been saving themselves. You were thrown into an offensive system in which the central philosophy changed weekly and you endured one of the least eloquent coaching changes in college football history. You were exposed to far more physical punishment than most college football quarterbacks should have to face. You've suffered late hits, face masks, concussions, broken digits, strained muscles and a more contusions than you would care to comment on. Even more painfully, you've endured the limitless expectations heaped upon you by an adoring fan base. You've dazzled us with your long runs. But we want more. You've matured as a passer. We want more. You've physically beaten DL's, LB's and S's. We want more. You've passed for 300 and ran for 100 twice in your career. We want more. You led the Pac 10 in total offense. We want more.
Despite this controversy and pressure, you keep choosing the Huskies.
When Pete Carroll came calling and wanted you to anchor his championship winning teams at USC, you chose the Huskies.
When you got your head taken off at Oregon State and were carted away by an ambulance, you came back to the field that night and chose the Huskies.
When the Ty regime came crashing down in that painful and humbling 2008 season leaving you with an opportunity to transfer somewhere else more stable (like a man named Mark Pope did a decade before you), you chose the Huskies.
When Coach Sark was hired and promised to convert the offense into a style completely foreign to you, you chose the Huskies.
When the MLB came calling and drafted you ... twice..., you chose the Huskies.
When the NFL pundits promised that you would be the #1 pick in the NFL draft, you chose the Huskies.
Jake, I am as guilty as anyone inside or outside of Husky Nation in critiquing your play. I've jumped on the happy feet issue and bemoaned your accuracy issues. I've joined in the chorus of people who have wondered aloud if you were capable of being a "real QB". I'm an idiot. I've missed the big picture. I've ignored what is staring me right in the face. I've failed to face facts.
The facts are that you have restored Husky Football and made the game fun again for the fans of Purple and Gold. We wake up every Saturday morning thinking we have a chance of winning the game ahead that day. Why? Because of you. Your presence, your leadership, your capabilities and the impact you have on your teammates give us hope. It hurts when we lose only because we all thought that we had a chance to win that day.
As the final season of your Husky career winds down, I implore you to shut out and ignore those hawks around the program who label your performance as "disappointing". Ignore those so-called experts who project your draft status on a weekly basis. Ignore the taunts of those other Pac 10 fan bases that hurl their contempt upon the celebrity that someone else created for you. Ignore idiots like me who have nothing better to do than to rant on message boards while you go about the business of creating a meaningful and fulfilling life for yourself.
Most importantly, have fun. Let it all hang out in these last few games. Keep playing the game the way you have been playing it - for your teammates and for your family. Play the game you want to play and let the chips fall wherever they may. We won't soon, if ever, see another person with your character, talent and physical skills come through this program. You have earned our adoration and appreciation.
Sincerely,
Husky Fans Everywhere

Rec'd like a Mutha
whatever ends up of “Montlake Jake’s” legacy, nothing will ever change the fact that he’s a god-damned good man and a true Husky hero.
Jake
Heartily endorsed by this longtime Husky fan who has been following since the fifties and seen them all since 1960.
You are truly the man of this and every other century and I wish they would install you as a Husky Legend on your last home game.
the game
Another comment on those who say we Huskies/Jake don’t win enough games:
“it’s not who wins or loses but how you play the game!”
Grantland Rice I think and I might not have the exact quote. But I admittedly make mistakes.
I meant to post this a while ago
But then forgot. It seems appropriate for this thread.

The content you’d care about ends when the bullet points start. I haven’t followed Locker closely, but he seems like a genuine class act. It certainly shows that UW’s entire fan base has rallied around him. I still remember being struck at the beginning of the tv broadcast of our game that every UW fan wearing a jersey was wearing #10. That has to be a credit to him and what he has done for his school.

Jake
The thing about Jake is, when you hear people talk about him, it’s easy to be cynical and think “Ah, he’s not as great as they’re pumping him up to be”. But every account I’ve heard confirms that Jake is a genuine kid with a great, level head on his shoulders. He really is the kid you’d want your son to grow up to be or your daughter to grow up and marry. He’s not perfect, and I’m sure if someone really wanted to dig deep into his personal life they’d find some way in which he’s done the wrong thing once or twice, but he’s about as close to ideal as any public figure around.
If this were Hollywood, this year would end with the Huskies going 10-2, winning the conference and then the Rose Bowl and Jake winning the Heisman. Unfortunately for us Husky fans, this is reality, and it’s quite possible Jake may leave school without having ever tasted a winning season and a bowl game, and some will label him a failure or an over rated bust because of it. But as Gekko perfectly describes above, that would be a huge mistake. Jake will be a Husky legend even if this season ends below expectations, because of the commitment he made time and time again to the program, and for being the tremendous human being that he is
Good post.

Jake
Other unmeasurable impacts from Jake are both of the 4th quarter drives against USC for last-minute upsets. I think those 2 victories will go a long way in helping Sark recruit in Southern Cal and across the country.
Amen.
This. This says what I wanted to but couldn’t quite figure out how.
Much respect for this, Gekko.
I'm done participating in this game of expectations...
… Jake and the rest of the seniors that have endured the mess made by others only have half a season left. I’m through critiquing and complaining. I’m simply going to observe and encourage from here on out. Time is too short not to enjoy what those kids are giving to us.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

MUSH YOU HUSKIES!!!! GO DAWGS!!!!
Expect to Win!!!
Me too!
I’d almost given up reading comments( but not JB’s posts) because of all of the negativity by those who aren’t worthy of carrying Jake’s jockstrap. Thanks Gekko, for restoring some of my faith in Husky fandom.
Well Said!...
…and Amen to that! GO JAKE! GO DAWGS!!
Washington Husky Football-"Hear the bark, feel the bite!"
I got a little choked up reading this
Like most folks here, I’ve been on the Locker-train since before he ever took a snap as a Husky. I bought all the hype coming out of Ferndale, and then I passed it on to all my Trojan and Bruin peers down in SoCal, where I was living at the time. He was so much more than a prospect – he was our savior. The one to carry us out of the shadow of our southern neighbors and back to Pasadena where we belong. But through no fault of his own, it never happened, as the OP stated much more eloquently.
In hindsight, we should have known better. I should have known better. Football is the ultimate team sport because one player, no matter how good, cannot mask a team’s deficiencies, and over the past five years this team has been as flawed as any in the PAC-10, maybe all of D-1. Bad coaching, worse recruiting, character & chemistry issues. Who’s the best college quarterback any of you can remember watching? I’m pretty young, but Bradford comes to mind. Vince Young of course. Tebow. Rodgers was pretty incredible during his short time at Cal. None of them would have gotten this team to a bowl, because it takes a team to win football games, and there hasn’t been a real football team in Montlake since I discovered internet porn.
So to sum up, thank you Jake. Thank you for being so steadfast and true to the UW, its fans, and all of Washington. Anyone who’s ever played organized football has at least some notion of the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve shed for this program, while also conducting yourself as well as any high-profile college athlete in the nation. You are a model for aspiring student-athletes everywhere, and it was completely unfair for the fans and media to label you as Washington’s “savior”. Jesus never asked for that title either, and like the Son of God himself, I’m afraid most people won’t appreciate what you were doing until you’re long gone, if ever. Bravo Jake. Bravo.
Excellent!
Very well said.
Jake Locker is the kind of guy that makes you admire him so much that you really want to see him succeed. Even some people who are not Husky fans have become big time Jake Locker fans once they get to know him. He will always be a hero to me.

Heh it's all in good fun. For once I was actually glad to see you all beat the Beavers.
I still sports-hate the Huskies though, so we can agree on mutual sports destruction.

Yup. what he said...
Jake Locker, you’re the alpha Dawg. If the Seahawks can figure out some way to draft you, I’d be happy as heck to watch you for the rest of your career. You will win it all, somewhere.
Man
I’m a Beaver fan, but that post put a little smile on my face :)
thanks gekko
I’ve been thinking about the end of the UCLA game for a while. Watching Jake head off the field for the last time will be a tough one. Get choked up just thinking about it.

Awesome...
Wow, some of the best I’ve ever read, the original post and the response by Miracle_max (“football is the ultimate team game”), spot on and a good reminder for us all. As a lifetime Jake fan vs. a Dawg fan (grew up in Ferndale, went to Western, so now a converted Dawg), we did so want this to be the Hollywood ending. And even though it might not be, it shouldn’t really diminish Jake’s legacy…and if we ever want a reminder of exactly what it would look like without Jake at QB, just rememeber what happened in the 9 games he missed his Sophomore year (0-9, not close in really any games except WSU, 12 pts a game average)…too easy to forget that’s more of the reality we’d face if he has to sit out any games this year.
And just have to comment on the numbers, since I think most folks don’t realize the magnitude of what he’s actually accomplished. UW is KNOWN for it’s history of QB’s, and yet Jake will end up #1 in 8 of the top 15 QB career categories, #2 in 6 more (and yes, the one missing is the completion %) :-)
Stunning…and many of those number are on per play basis, not total career volume. So the lowest interception %, the most points per game, the most yardage responsible for game, the most TD’s (both in the passing column AND the running column). So Jake man, we love ya and you’ll always be the #1 Dawg who (hopefully) helped survive through the Dark Ages.
