Recruiting board

Over the last couple of days we have recieved a few requests asking for information on recruiting. I spend a lot of time tracking what is going on out there and who Washington is interested in. We know one thing for sure and that is we currently 17 verbals and the coaches plan to take 25 or more if they can. If they take more than 25 they have to haeither have some early enrollee's or some kids who are willing to grey shirt because you can only have 25 in a single class.

I am guessing that Washington will take one more running back, and two more offensive linemen. Over on defense the Huskies will likely grab at least one more DT, DE, MLB, S, and maybe two more CB's. If you do the math that works out to be 26 in the class. If your bring in 26 that means 7 on the current roster won't be here come next fall.

Below is a little spread sheet I keep for fun during the year which shows are commits and the kids we are suposedly in on according to the various services out there.

Sean Parker

is another guy that is seriously considering the Dawgs. I’m no pro scout, but having watched his film, we want this guy in our defensive backfield along with Demetrius Wright and Troy Hill. These guys will do big things in their college careers

I was concerned about the depth at the DB positions before LSU, and after watching the game I stress it once again: we NEED some bigtime playmakers back there!!!

by ChazzReinhold on Sep 9, 2009 4:56 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

But look at the situations where we got burned for TDs. Without looking back at the game, I do believe both LSU TD passes were on 3rd down and short.

In both situations we were in press alignments. I think Les Miles caught us in “stop run” mode both times, that would ultimately explain why it didn’t appear we had safety help and left the corners on an island with bigger, taller, and very skilled LSU receivers.

Keep in mind that we are very young back there. I know we need help back there and so does the coaching staff. But we are going to get better in coverage. We just got caught at trying to stop the run, LSU saw what we were doing and exploited our inexperienced secondary. We’ll get better in coverage. I’m sure Holt was gambling quite a bit in those situations and if you want to win without a seasoned secondary then you have to take chances now and then.

I hear ya

I know we’re young back there, but we also seriously lack depth. Demetrius Wright’s quote from Biggins’ article: “They also told me they don’t have a lot of depth and if I come in and work hard, I would have a good shot to play a lot as a true freshman”

Bottom line for me is of all the positions, the OL and defensive secondary are the biggest needs for this class. Since we’re 1 or 2 spots away from filling out an amazing OL class, we gotta get some blue chippers for DB’s. Holt deserves to have some horses to run with the speedy WR’s at Cal and SC and some heavy hitters at Safety.

Totally Agree

Cornerbacks are a rare breed- if you don’t have corners then you have to expect that you will give up chunks of passing yardage. And I agree in the depth department.

Yet I do like the kids playing back there now. They got burned a couple of times, but these kids want to learn- you can almost see it in their eyes. They want the taste of success as bad as anyone.

We’re going to go after a lot of O linemen and we’ll pick up some high star defensive backs with this recruiting class. I’m sure of it…

I'm sure of it too

One thing I know for certain, Sark and his boys can flat out RECRUIT!

Give me Wright, Hill and Parker and I’m happy as a clam in high tide for the rest of the class!!

Oh and Rowland too. Want him badly

I know it is a no-no to put info out from Dawgman. I am not a subscriber to Dawgman and I don’t have the inside info. This is all based on my opinion:

I think we are going to land some of these guys. If we make a good showing vs. USC and win some games vs. folks that we aren’t suppose to win, string together a winning record, some of these guys are going to really consider Sark, Holt, and UDub!

USC can’t take everyone and everyone doesn’t want USC. I think the tides are turning in our favor. I think USC could potentially lose 4 games this season. In turn I think we could win up to 8 games this season. Sark and Holt know these SoCal kids and their high school coaches. But the beautiful thing about the relationship is they know Sark and Holt- they know their style, and they know they ran the USC gig while they were down there.

USC is “home” to a lot of these kids, but what happens if SC loses 4 games this season? What happens if Washington wins a helluva lot more games then the experts thought?

All I am saying is don’t think for a second that Sark and Holt can’t get some of these kids to commit. Nobody and I mean nobody thought we’d land Nick Montana. I think I was the first blogger in this blogosphere to say I wanted Montana over Heaps.

Sark and Holt are going to bring in top shelf talent as early as this season. These guys are built for success and nothing is going to stand in their way.

Go Dawgs! WOOF!!!

I wanted Montana over Heaps as well...

Heaps is legit, and seeing how much spread Sark ran last week he might be the better fit overall (more polished in the pocket and runs the dink and dunk spread at Skyline). Although that could be Sark’s way to beat the speed that LSU had. I expect more pro sets as the season progresses. Montana is a better pro set QB who can throw on the run very well, and I think he’s more accurate in the underneath routes than Heaps is.

This is already a stellar class, and it can only get better. If we can bring in Shaw/Wright, Hill, Rowland/Hatcie/Tanigawa (two of three), and Hudson we could be looking at one of the best “on paper” classes in UW history.

by B Money on Sep 9, 2009 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I said "potentially"

There’s a big difference.

And why do I think USC could potentially lose four games? True freshmen QB, rebuilt defensive line, all new starters at Linebacker, and one guy coming back as a starter in the secondary. Oh and lost both coordinators.

At Ohio State is going to be a tougher win then most think, At Oregon, At Washington, At Cal- and there you go. Their right in front of you is the list of potential losses. True freshmen QBs don’t win Pac 10 titles- has their ever been a true freshmen QB to lead his team to the Rose Bowl? Sark and Holt ran both the offense and defensive units at USC, both are gone and we don’t know a dam thing about the newbies.

Robo QB was a frosh

and beat the Huskies, but I can’t remember if $C went to the Rose Bowl that year. I can’t remember his name right now, last I heard he was in jail for dealing drugs (tried to beat the bust by escaping on a skate board).

As a soph he came to Seattle and gave Crazi and John B their tag line.

by dawgdude on Sep 11, 2009 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, they won the Pac-10 that year and went to the Rose Bowl. He was a RS-Fr and was slated to be a backup until the starter went down with an injury early in the season.

That was...

Todd Marinovich. Great HS/College player, horrible pro, and… shall we say, tremendous issues off the field.

Dude never ate McDonalds till he was in college.

at Oregon, at Washington?? Are you feeling okay??

You forget one thing, these “new” starters, are they inexperienced mid of the road players? Nope, they’ve been at USC learning the ropes, playing against USC’s offense, and they are by the way some of the most talented players in the country. USC doesn’t rebuild, they reload and fire.

Any chance you might have caught a game this year? Do you think USC is scared of Oregon or the UW? USC will go into Oregon and CRUSH the ducks. They’ll come in here, we’ll give them a good game, and they’ll probably win. Oops, looks more like 0-2 losses for the Trojans.

Remember 1992, 1993, 1994

The UW lost a lot of players to the NFL, and we just kept reloading, and we just kept winning. Don’t worry, this will all become very clear on Saturday afternoon.

A Few I'd Add

Shaquille Richardson, a CB who is widely reported to be visiting October 24th.

James McConico, Marquis Flowers, Derrick Malone, Marcus Umu, Tevin Carter, Kenny Stills, Christian Thomas, Louiszell Alexander, & Kenronte Walker.

Besides HS early enrollees I imagine we’ll see one or two JC OL who can enroll this winter recruited (Weaver & Alexander can both enroll in winter). Heck, maybe even three if they think one or more possibly won’t make it into school. If we play against USC like we did against LSU the list may grow to include other top prospects on the west coast.

Also, Taz Stevenson is being recruited to play S not WR & Shirley has stated in the past a preference to play DE.

by Olyfan on Sep 9, 2009 6:29 PM PDT reply actions

Richardson seemed to impress alot of people at the summer camps...

I thought we were mostly out of the running, good to hear he’ll (probably) visit.

My best guess on the others…

I don’t think Stills is all that interested, he’s looking for the big stage right off the bat (USC, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU types).

I think Tevin is probably going to Cal…hopefully Mom comes around.

Flowers may very well end up here…I like Reily, but I’ve heard Sark want’s him at TB. With the TB depth we already have coupled with Davis and James/Cooper/McConico he might see that he’s likely to end up at Safety.

It’s such a crap shoot, but I trust that even if we don’t land any of the big remaining targets that we’ll end up with quality sleepers (or nobody) rather than just filling spots.

by B Money on Sep 9, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Tevins Mom

She wants him to go to Cal. We want him to make his own mind up.

If we get Riley we wont go after James or Cooper since we told him RB. We only have room for one more speed back. Once he signs we will probably not go hard after the others, not that we wouldnt take’em.

by bigdave967 on Sep 9, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll bet if Riley commits

we’ll take either one of the others and let it play out. That’s assuming that Riley committing doesn’t put UW out of play for James and Cooper. All three look good, but I wish Riley would play saftey, he has all the tools to be an All Conference player. I’ve not seen alot of impressive performances from him at TB.

by B Money on Sep 9, 2009 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

either way I think we're getting ahead of ourselves...

It probably won’t pickup again until November when we get a good season long look at UW and the recruits. I know a few are pretty big targets and will probably do the late January hat dance.

by B Money on Sep 9, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Riley

IMO, Riley is a longshot. If we get Riley my jaw will absolutely drop cuz he is SOOOOO legit

by ChazzReinhold on Sep 9, 2009 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

James, Cooper, Riley

All three would be a HUGE compliment to Melvin Davis and I would take any one of them. With that said, Riley is better suited as a Safety and James could have injury issues….could.

I think Cooper is the most likely to sign with UW…less national exposure then the other two means less competition. That does not mean he isn’t as good though. If we can sign James then I can see us landing top safety prospect Parker (and visa versa). Meaning that we may back off Riley a little bit. Either way we are in good shape to have a top 20 class. A couple of upsets and it could sky rocket.

Next year will be the big class due to the instate prospects. If Sark can get Kasen Williams and Jenkins then he will be sitting pretty!

by bigdave967 on Sep 10, 2009 5:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I dont' really care about Jenkins

If we get him that’s great but Kasen is the offensive target we need and then getting the big uglies like Taniela Tupou at DT is another must have.

No disrespect to ASJ but I don’t typically go gaga over TE and I think Marlion Barnett is going to be a pretty good pass catching TE.

by murchy on Sep 10, 2009 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions

He is the top TE and is from WA...

he is exactly the kind of guys Sark needs to keep in state. He is 6’7 240 as a Junior. Trust me…we need him.

Where did this kid come from? Has anybody seen footage of Jefferson in action? Might be a great get if Carter sticks w/ Tedford.

Sark looking for the "Cream of the Crop."

Sark and his Staff will not be happy with 2nd tier players. They are battling hard with USC…get a couple of wins against high profile teams…it is Katy by the bar.

USC sanctions

I have a stack of newspaper clippings exposing MAJOR VIOLATIONS by the USC football program over the last few years.
I have sent them to the NCAA, the PAC 10, various newspaper reporters and have not received a single reply.
Weren’t they supposed to be sanctioned in August?
