Washington Ranked #24 in Latest AP Poll

The University of Washington football team is ranked #24 by the Associated Press.  It is the first time the Huskies have been in the rankings since Sept. 28, 2003. The 2-1 Huskies lost 15 games in a row over three seasons before they beat Idaho a week ago. Yesterday's victory over USC coupled with a strong showing against LSU in the opener has the country buzzing about the Huskies.

In other news LB Donald Butler was named the Walter Camp Defensive player of the week. The award goes to the most impressive defensive player inthe country on a weekly basis.

Up next for Washington is their first road trip of the season. The Huskies face Stanford in Palo Alto next Saturday followed by Notre Dame in South Bend the next weekend before returning home to face Arizona.

I love this!!

but i have to ask the age old question, and yes, I already know the answer, but if the Dawgs beat them, why are they still rated ahead of us. Points out the conflict created by preseason polls.

I'm tired of next year. Win now!

The Age Old Answer

USC was #3 and fell to 12th. When you lose this early in the season and you are ranked this high you can expect to lose an average of 8-10 spots in the poll. Washington would have been ranked approximately 60 or so going into the game. Washington entrance into the rankings is a huge jump in comparison to the Trojans fall.

Is Washington a better team than USC? They were yesterday but if they played ten times USC would win nine times. I honestly think USC was the best team in the country going into yesterday’s game and they just may be the best team in the country at the end of the year. We just happened to catch them at the right time. If they lose again they will fall back another ten or so spots. Luckily they play WSU this week.

So the true answer is that it doesn’t make much difference this early in the season and that is why the BCS poll doesn’t come out till sometime in October.

USC could still make a title run.

The only positive for USC yesterday is that they lost early in the season with a few key players on the sideline. If a one loss team makes it into the championship game, they could still make a run at the title.

I think you pointed out a key to yesterdays game, it was a GREAT win, but 9 out of 10 times USC would have won. We still have a lot of work to do to get back to the top of the conference, we need to bring our A game every week, and we need to work our butts off to get better, especially on defense. A lot fewer teams will be overlooking us now that we beat USC.

great great win for us ...

… but this is definitely a transition year for USC. I don’t care how good the surrounding talent is – a true frosh QB winning the job outright tells you that there were a few whiffs at that position. In addition, transitioning out all of those seniors from last year was a major blow. This is a Texas, Cal, Florida, Alabama year.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Yep

You’re right, USC’s offense just doesn’t have the balance it needs to be a title contender, IMO, Florida is the front runner, and they will be very tough to beat.

Now everyone knows why Pete Caroll was so pissed when Mark Sanchez decided to go pro a year early. He knew what was coming. Sanchez could possibly be rookie of the year in the NFL, while USC is left with young, inexperienced players at QB.

neither Corp or Mustain qualify as "young and inexperienced" ...

… by College Football standards. They do qualify as underachievers, but I’ll leave that to the USC crowd to debate.

Corp fits the inexperienced bill.

Improvement

Man I am still on cloud Nine!…but having said that we can still improve whole lot! Center-Tolar needs to work on his snaps. Tackle-Habben needs to work on not moving before the snap. Punting-Mahan has a strong leg but he needs to be consistent. The point is we need to focus on getting better and get prepared to play Stanford. They’re favored and this next game is just as important as the one we just won. GO DAWGS!!

by doubledeucedawg on Sep 20, 2009 4:40 PM PDT reply actions

the snapping was terrible - reminded me of last year.

… and I’m still befuddled by our inability to generate any kind of pass rush. ND is just two weeks away and that air attack is going to be tough to stop if our guys can’t get in JC’s face. I just watched the replays and I saw a lot of hands on thrown balls that didn’t get sucked in (as opposed to pure drops) … Fogerson had two, Polk had two, Middleton had one, Kearse had one, JJ had one and Aguilar had two (although, to be fair, one was that overthrow in the endzone that would have been an amazing catch if DA’s fingers were a half inch longer). Reeling in a few more of the tough ones in traffic will make this offense very difficult to contend with. Finally, I hate to say it, but the bulk of the pressure that Jake experienced last night was penetration along the left side of the line. Ossai and Christine were not on the same page on a number of plays. We’ll have to watch that.

There, that is my nit list. I can’t believe that we are 9 point dogs going to Stanford. This Vegas local is on his way down to the Green Valley Ranch sports book right now.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Yeah, I saw that line and thought

If I were a betting man, that would be borderline stealing.

Like Jake Locker said in his an interview…we have a lot of room for improvement

by bigdawgdaddy999 on Sep 20, 2009 5:53 PM PDT reply actions

That’s one of the cool things about that win, is even though we did a whole lot of things right, there’s still more that can improve. Jake missed a few plays – that pass to the left into coverage that went incomplete when the entire right side of the field was open for him to run for a TD, the overthrow on the run to an open WR; there was the drop of a sure pick by Butler, and the numerous missed tackles by our defense as well as the holes their OL busted open against us early.

I think we all need to enjoy just how much has been accomplished already, and knock on wood that we stay lucky with our health, because there are some areas where we are still very thin on quality depth.

Let’s hope these guys keep up their intensity and play just as good on the road as they have at home. The good news is there probably won’t be a whole lot of people in Stanford Stadium.

Congratulations on a great win!

I’m really happy you guys beat up USC. Good job! I hope you win a lot more this season, except against us!

National Recognition

In the Number One slot for Week 3’s “Who’s Hot” at College Football News is…

1. Washington

This was huge—for the program, for the kids that didn’t win a game in 2008, and for the new staff that has visions of restoring the glory on Montlake. The Huskies were supposed to play well against USC and then eventually fade into the land of moral victories, but it never happened. Special attaboys belong to Nick Holt’s defense, which prevented the Trojans from converting a single third or fourth down and kept them out of the end zone over the final 48 minutes.

Unreal

Still an amazing accomplishment. It’s funny though, I talked to a lot of fans and most of them BELIEVED that we had a shot. Believing is that first step in doing. It’s that critical mental thing.

Husky Stadium

Did anyone notice how this is the first time in a LONG TIME that Husky Stadium awakened to it’s former rockin’ self?! No coincidence there but those fans deserve some credit, the Husky D fed off of the crowd Saturday!

It’s funny, I actually felt like the crowd had better energy vs. LSU. There were a lot of times on defense I felt like our crowd was too subdued. I suppose the way USC marched at will on us their first two drives had something to do with it, but even in the 3rd quarter there were times I felt like our fans were lax.

I think part of the blame goes to TV. It sucks to see the defense come on the field and start yelling and clapping and stomping to make noise, only to notice the guy in the red official outfit standing on the field because the TV network has to show more truck and beer ads. Takes some momentum away from the crowd.

We’ll know we’re back as a crowd when every play of every possession by our opponents is met with deafening noise. That hasn’t happened yet, though we’re getting closer than we’ve been in a while.

Not me...

Not even close Husky Stadium was WAY louder vs $C.

I'll take what we got now...

…this is WAY better than it’s been. The thing is, once the defense got it going it was a serious give and take with the crowd and the defense. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one kirk. I sit on the south upper deck, where do you sit?

North Deck. Maybe it was just the sections around me, but I felt like the crowd was more consistently into it vs. LSU.
