Kibbles and Bits

It isn't looking good for Matt Barkley who missed his third consecutive practice today. Reports out there said he tried to throw before practice but had difficulty with his bruised shoulder. Pete Carroll may wait till game time to make a decison on who the starter will be. I would rather faced a dinged up Matt Barkley than the more mobile Aaron Corp. I think at this point the odds are pretty good that Corp will be the starter on Saturday.

Safety Taylor Mays is still out. He is expected to try to play. CB Marshall Jones would start at safety of Mays is not ready to go.

TB Joe McKnight missed practice today because of migraines.

USC reserve TB Marc Tyler will not play this week. He is out with a sprained toe.

LT Charles Brown who had been out a couple days with the flu returned to practice today.

Husky reserve DT DeShon Matthews won't play of Saturday as he recovers from a bruised knee.

DE Darrion Jones is now practicing and could start on Saturday.

The USC-Ohio State thriller is the most-viewed college football game ever on ESPN. The Trojans’ 18-15 come-from-behind win drew nearly 10.6 million total viewers, more than any regular-season or bowl game on the network. ESPN said Monday that the 7.3 rating was its highest for a college football game since Florida State-Miami 15 years ago.

The New York Yankees continue to seek college football games in their new stadium and are close to signing a four-year agreement to host what is likely to be called the Yankee Bowl, people familiar with the negotiations said. The Big East and Big 12 are expected to participate.

UCLA has suspended four football players for violating team rules, sidelining them for Saturday's home game against Kansas State. Starting cornerback Courtney Viney was suspended by coach Rick Neuheisel along with running back Milton Knox and receivers Morrell Presley and Randall Carroll. The school didn't specify the nature of the rule violations.

I know I'm going to get bombed for this ...

… but was anyone else disturbed by Holt’s quote today?

I think we are getting better. I think there are some deficiencies there with personnel.

My goodness, its the “not enough bullets” quote all over again. Its one thing to think it, its another thing to say it in the media.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

with the new regime

I think it’s necessary to let the team know that they have to get better or there won’t be room with a full class coming.

The dead weight needs to be cut. Even if it means hurt feelings.

It's not a

“Not enough Bullets” statement IMHO because it’s not being used as an excuse

by T9ODawg on Sep 16, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Difference IMO

is that Ty said that in 2007 after he had 2 full years to recruit more “bullets”. His lack of talent was completely his fault. Nick Holt is speaking the truth that he didnt inherit a defense full of studs. These arent his recruits that fit his system. Dont get me wrong, I dont think he should have said it but its obviously a true statement. Its a fine line that he walked with that quote but maybe his defense needs to show him that he is wrong…motivation maybe? Who knows…

Good point....

…I’ve heard Holt say something like that before and it kind of zinged me then too. Sark doesn’t seem to go there. Coaches do have different styles and obviously Coach Holt is who he is. I was thinking it might be a motivator too Dave.

Bullets and Deficiencies

I think it is fair to say this team is missing some bullets and has some deficiencies in comparison to USC, LSU, California, and probably Notre Dame. The problem with Willingham is that he never worked hard enought to attract and develop those bullets to turn it all around.

I don’t think Holt is using it as an excuse. I think he is being realistic. A realistic goal for this team is to claw and scratch its way to over .500 despite those deficiencies. I like our chances if we stay healthy.

This staff hit the road hard immediately after the first press conference. They brought in a small unheralded first class that is actually contributing surprisingly well. The second class they are working on right now has 18 current verbals. Word on the street is they will take up to 30 players if they can find a way to get them all in.

This coming class should take care of the deficiencies or lack of bullets. It also should take care of the excuses. Give these coaches the right talent and they will take it to the next level. They know what they are doing.

Amen!

I think I can speak for all of us when I say what the staff has accomplished so far is very impressive! It’s making Woodward and Emmert look like a couple of genius’s!

I think we are getting better. I think there are some deficiencies there with personnel!!!

WOW…as if we did not know this. He is referring to no depth and not the quality of talent he likes. Better talent on the team makes other players play at higher level in practice. TW left the cupboard on the aspect… I mean depth. We have good and quality coaching now. It makes me about to vomit to think what was going on at the UW the last 4 years. It was close to being criminal.

Like the pot calling the kettle black

We all knew we needed more talent. We all knew that there were plenty of holes. We all knew it would take a couple of years of very hard work to climb out of the hole.

Showing well against LSU and beating Idaho has given the fan base hope and the players confidence. It doesn’t mean that anything is even close to being turned around at this point. Like Sark said the other day. This team has to paint the black of the plate rather than pound it over at 98 mph. It is what it is this season.

By the start of Sark’s third season this program should be in very good shape. Until we get there we will get by with trickery, duct tape, and bailing wire.

Oh ya….and Jake Locker!

These coaches

though, seem to be able to work around the deficiencies, something I’m not sure the previous even tried.

Like I said, it is one thing to think it, another to say it to the media.

… and he said it in response to the question as to what happened to the Defense against Idaho. I’m excited about what this staff is doing, but this was a blunder by a coach isn’t too cozy behind the mic. Hopefully he learns from it.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

"isn't too cozy behind the mic"

I’ve got to agree with what your saying, it’s definitely not something you need to say to the media. If you are a coach, your job is to make your players better. Sark better make sure there are no more blunders from his coaching staff, what better way to get players to quit, then telling them they suck.

Yeah, ultimately it’s just not a good thing to suggest your players aren’t very good. No matter how true it may be, whether or not you recruited them or not, you have to be more careful in what you say. What Holt should’ve said is “We need to get a lot better”.

Joe McKnight?

has anyone besides myself seen that McKnight gets injured easy and often? That kid is always limping off or being carried off the field.
