Gekko's Junk Drawer
A week to go 'til the season kicks in full force and Gekko (referring to himself in the third person as all fine sports personalities do) has a few observations that he would not mind starting some chatter on.
1. WSU
Why is there still not a starting QB there. With a week to go and Lopina not yet beating Lobster, the choice should be clear ... go with the youngster. If they both give you an equal chance to win now, pick the one who has more to contribute over the long haul.
2. OSU
I'm not a believer. Moevao has the guts, but his already weak arm was shredded last year. Canfield is serviceable, but has a limited skill set (though pretty accurate given enough space/time to throw). The o-line is not the same as the one that opened holes for Quizz last year. Very skeptical
3. UCLA
That o-line and a redshirt freshman QB? Their D needs to hold opponents to 17 pts or less every week.
4. ND
I hate those guys ... just wanted to put that out there.
5. WRs
When are we going to see another WR win a Heisman? Dez Bryant,, Dez Briscoe, and Julio Jones have Heisman type abilities ... but won't their QBs always get the lion's share of the credit?
6. Taylor Mays
Speaking of Heisman WRs ... if Taylor played the position, would he be considered the top WR in the nation this year? 6-3, 225 and all that speed (not to mention work ethic, intelligence and team-player)
7. USC
What kind of knuckle-head must Mitch Mustain be to not even be in the dicussion during camp? He's only been in college football for about 10 years.
8. Oregon / Boise St
Boise St wins by 10 and prompts angry Duck fans to start begging for Belotti to come back

All Very Good Questions
1. WSU is in a real pickle. Both showed nothing last season and their kid wonder Levenseller ask out of his scholarship and was granted. WOW! Something smells bad in Pullman.
2. Oregon State has become one of the better Pac 10 coached programs. The trend of starting out slow and finishing rather strong reflects that. If the OSU O line is suspect it could be a long year for the Rogers brothers.
3. Neuheisel might find himself in an uncomfortable situation- on the hotseat at his almamateur.
4. Charlie Weis has been all talk so far in his ND career. Hasn’t done anything yet. In fact I have to give more credit to both Willingham and Davie thus far. At least Willingham won coach of the year and Davie had that signiture win over Nebraska. Weis on the other hand has gotten his butt kicked by everybody in BCS bowl games and lost to Army for the first time since I was practically born!
5. I think a WR will win the Heisemen eventually. Keep in mind that this award generally goes to QBs and RBs. It’s been a long time since a WR won this award. Hell we’ve actually have had a defensive player win it since a WR. Looking at history that seems like a long freakin’ time ago.
6. Taylor Mays is in an uncomfortable position. Who knows how good his senior year will be. With a revamped defense nobody really knows for sure. But I will state for the record, he is the greatest defensive back I’ve seen since Ronnie Lott and Troy Palamalu. Lawyer Milloy was great, but not Hall of Fame great.
7. Mustain should’ve kept his sorry butt in Arkansas. That guy was a true freshman starting for the Razorbacks. He transfers to USC and still can’t get on the field.
8. I’m intrigued by the Oregon/Boise State game. As a loyalist for the Huskies does it come as a surprise that I will be pulling for the Broncs? Love the Pac 10 and always root for our Pac 10 brethern when they don’t play us- yep even the cougs. But I hate everything the University of Oregon football program stands for. hate the ducks!
Go Broncs!
All I saw was purple
Junk is right.
J/K, good stuff Gekko.
I’m highly skeptical of UCLA – I think they’ve got worse OL problems than we do, and I’m skeptical that Prince will be ready as a RS-Fr at QB. On the other hand, they should have a pretty good D. Still, I think UCLA is a good bet to finish 9th in the conference, ahead of only WSU. The question is, will Bruin fans have patience to see Neuheisel’s strong recruiting classes mature?
ASU is UCLA, just a few hours east. They also have big time questions at OL and QB, but a strong defense. I think they’ll be better than the Bruins though, but still a team the UW can leapfrog.
Oregon State has earned respect, which is why people are willing to look past all the glaring holes in their team. People just figure Riley knows what he’s doing and is able to re-load instead of rebuild at this point. But maybe this is a season where he rebuilds. I do think Canfield is a pretty good QB though…
Oregon IMO is getting too much credit. They lost some key pieces, and I’m not totally sold on Masoli. I think they’ll be in the upper half of the conference, but I don’t see them higher than #3, and I think teams like Arizona & Stanford could jump past them.
I think this is the best year for someone to leapfrog USC – as talented as Barkley may be, and as much skill as there is around him, he’s still just a true frosh at the toughest position on the field. And yeah, how much of a knucklehead must Mustain be for him to still not be in the starting QB picture? If ever there was a year for Tedford to get Cal to the Rose Bowl, this is it.
Speaking of which, I’d be higher on Cal to topple USC except I’m not sold on Riley, and I wonder whether Cal can handle the high expectations. This year will go a long way towards branding Tedford a good coach or a great coach.
WSU is in a tough spot. Wulff inherited a bad situation, but I haven’t seen anything that makes me think he’s the answer. The Cougs could be in the middle of a horrible run of football that sets their program way back. To think that Price and Doba had a run of 3 straight 10-win seasons just 6 years ago – that must seem like an eternity now, and it’s hard to see the next 10 win season on their horizon.
Notre Dame – I’m not sold. Every year, the hype is far beyond the reality. Weis has recruited well, I’ll give him that – and it’s the only reason to think that team will be any good this year. Their schedule is as weak as I can ever remember an Irish schedule being. If Sark gets some good early momentum going this season, I can see the Dawgs winning this game, even considering it’s in South Bend.
My comments
1. WSU is in trouble this year. The guys bailing and getting in trouble and failure to make a decision about the QB leads me to believe that Wuff has mgmnt issues.
2. OSU is going to come crashing down to reality this year. Everything last year stemmed from their great OL that allowed an avg back like Rogers to get great yardage. Stroughter helped get Rogers the WR the single coverage he needed to excel. They now have to replace their OL and DB backfield with new bodies. Dawgs beat them in Corvallis this year. Count on it.
3. The Defense will be good the offense will be slightly improved. We should win this game but historically we play bad games against UCLA.
4. ND …tired of playing them because we never put forth good efforts. This year will likely not be the exception and I’ll have to hear how great Clausen is. Yawn.
5. Heisman – stop caring about that award a long time ago.
6. Taylor Mays – love that he’s a local kid that represents well and I respect him as well.
7. Mitch Mustain- made the mistake that a lot of QB make. Going to a school were failure equals riding the pine your whole career.
8. I think BSU wins as well.
1. WSU looks in a bad way right now. They’ll start Lopina and give Lobster some time to get acclimated switch comes week three (when they go down by 3 scores against SMU). Next year keep an eye on their RS Fr. QB, I think he’s from Spokane but he could be the next decent sleeper Coog QB.
2.Canfield is good, Moevao has good leadership but is mediocre at best. I think they win 8-9 and go to a good bowl. The staff in Corvallis is too good to let a couple of OL guys wreck everything they’ve done there.
3. I’d bet their D can do it. They have a very good defense, and if they get lucky they can have a breakout game or two from the Off. and win 2 Pac-10 games.
4. I agree
5. Not this year, probably not until 2011 when James Johnson takes it behind RS Fr. QB sensation Nick Montana.
6. Class act and amazing hitter. He won’t be, but he should be the #1 pick next April. As a Seahawks fan, my biggest hope is that the Hawks and Broncos tank it this year and we can snag TayMay and Jevan Snead with two early picks.
7. Oh Mitchy, what could have been. He could have hung 600 yards on all the Razorbacks D-II opponents and SEC foes on his way to a bust of a pro career. Moral of the story; don’t transfer from the SEC to the Pac-10, there is no playing time for you overrated sissies.
8. My heart: BSU by 50+. My Head: Toss up with BSU taking it on Hook and Ladder in OT. F*** the Ducks!
My turn
1. I want WSU to be competitive so that it means more when we go on a 5 year winning streak against them. Also, when they are competitive they take wins away from teams we are leaping over.
2. Always root for OSU in the civil war. The more losses team Nike takes the better.
3. UCLA’s season is over when they lose to San Diego St. in week one. SDSU will start to win recruiting battles from UCLA and Westwood will long for basketball season again.
4. Man, I want this win. The only thing better than beating ND is beating BYU. Actually, I have never had the feeling that follows beating ND. Maybe this is the year. or maybe Lou Holts is a genius.
5. No WR will win the Heisman until the ESPN decides to hype one beyond belief.
6. Can’t wait till he’s in the NFL, and gone from the Pac-10.
7. Who?
8. The worst t-shirt is sports history is the one that red sox fans wear that says, “Yankees Suck”, because it really says that they spend more time thinking about the Yankees than they should. I do not care how team Nike does in any games and we should continue to ignore them like the dust on our shoes. Disdain, contempt, and refusal to acknowledge.

SDSU already snagged
Tyler Bray. He’s a 6-6 QB from the area who’s gotten rave reviews. He had intrest if no offer yet from UCLA. Just thought I’d throw that little nugget out there.

Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Six-hundred and ninety-four yards of total offense.
Did you expect much different...
Other than tonight I normally root for Pac-10 teams in OOC games. I just happen to be a Boise State fan and would love to see a non-auto qualifier go to the NC game to force some action on the BCS change.
You’re the Ducks, we’re the Huskies…we don’t like you (or at least your school). I do happen to enjoy arguing with Ducks, so I’ll continue to treat you guys like our younger brother who’s getting all the attention right now, but later in life will fall down because you’ve been handed everything.
Good luck in weeks 2 and 3.
Miscellaneous...
….Living on the eastside of the mountains and having to endure the coug fan’s petty BS, I hope they go 0-12! They are crying over the failed deal to play at Qwest like it’s ALL Scott Woodward’s fault.
I always root for OSU too, not that I really like them or anything but I LOATHE the ducks! By the way, you guys should read some of the BS they’re spouting off at BSU! There is a reason why they’ve become the co champions of worst fans in the Pac! That’s debatable of course but my choice is WSU/UofZero.
I hate ND too! It’s funny how the biggest college football program with the most bucks is also the most hated!
I think if a WR does win he’ll probably have to be some kind of dual threat guy, like Desmond Howard was. Is anyone out there playing both sides of the ball anymore? I know it wouldn’t be full time if they did, just a thought.
Yeah hasn’t TM graduated yet?
Ditto…Who?
Duck U is going down in “The House of Blue Pain”! I’ll be watching and my guess is that stadium is going to louder then H_ll! If the ducks don’t get off early they are going to be in trouble!
Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!
Blame Scott all they want
But when it comes right down to it we didn’t need the Quest deal, they did. Why would we sell ourselves short by playing in a 66,000 seat stadium when we can host one at 75,000 seat capacity? It wasn’t a good deal for us and that is the bottom line.
Now I’m not sure if their lobbying efforts was enough to thwart off our rennavation deal by using tax dollars, but they did make a strong stand on that issue. All this stinks of karma and karma is a BeeAutch!
No more carrying WSU. They want to play hardball, we can to. But I don’t think they are going to need any of our help. Paul Wulff is in over his head. That guy is not qualified to be a BCS level head coach. But who the hell are the cougies going to get? What it comes down to is Wulff came cheap and cheap is good for Washington State. Afterall the entire WSU athletic program is sponsored by the Washington State Wellfare program. You always get what you pay for…
All I saw was purple
Agreed Crazi, so if...
…“cheap is good” for wsu then quit bitchin’ about how Holt is paid more than Wulff! Admit that you chose to go the cheap route and quit whining! They say we whine all the time, well look in the dang mirror!
Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!
Yeah the split on tickets...
would leave 10,000 season ticket holders “holding the bag” so to speak. Sorry but you guys will have to put into a lotto or hope wsu turns in some seats, which they won’t of course because most of their alumni live on the west side of the state. It would also make Husky Stadium less relevant at a time when we need to show solidarity of how “important” it is to all the people in the entire Northwest!
Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!
too funny...couple of my thoughts
WSU- Wow, I am glad we are not them right now and embarrassed we lost to them last year given their sorry state.
OSU-I simply can’t imagine the OL being as powerful of a force this year; which will put pressure on the brothers Rodgers and Canfield.
UCLA-Their D will need to be stellar and deep because they are going to spend A LOT of time this year cleaning up for the O.
ASU-God, I just cant imagine that they are going to make a run beyond 6-6.
UA- I am a believer…if Gronk is healthy. The defense will be good, but they must have Gronk to be in the top of the PAC10
Oregon – Can’t wait to see them lose to Boise…
By the way
… can you believe that Mustain is still a Junior? given the fact that he went to high school and Arkansas with Damian Williams, is there anyway to look at him and not think of him as one of the all time 5-star busts?
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Heisman...
…since Crabtree didn’t win it this past year I don’t see anyone else stepping up in the future unless he is a duel threat as DF22 said….
All hail Gekko!!!
He definitely called this one, many of us saw Oregon falling apart and Chip Kelly failing, but he called the game it would happen.
