6 and 6

I have been to quite a few practices and I have come away very, very impressed. If Locker stays healthy were 6 and 6 or better. Our defense is going to surprise people not just by losing.

by bigdawgdaddy999 on Aug 27, 2009 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

While I think that 6-6 is possible, I think 4-8 is a more realistic prediction. I think if Jake hadn’t been hurt last year, we beat WSU for sure and we have a good shot at beating Stanford, plus a respectable shot at UCLA and maybe Notre Dame.

Jake is back, E.J. is back, we didn’t lose all that much in terms of productive players and the team is in better shape with a much better attitude and the coaching staff is likely better (the coaching really couldn’t have gotten worse from what we had). Our returning guys should be improved, and I think we have better systems in place (at least on offense).

On the other hand, the schedule is fairly tough, our OL looks really shaky, our DB’s are questionable, depth is poor at many spots and Sark is unproven as a Head Coach. There’s some question how good Holt is as a DC given that most view Pete Carroll as his own DC.

I’d obviously prefer 6-6, but I’d judge a 4-8 season to be reasonable.

6-6 seems more like a ceiling to me...

I’d be thrilled if it happened – and I would call it possible – but not probable. I’m happy with 3 wins – that’s Idaho, WSU – teams UW is “supposed” to beat – and one win over a team rated above them. That to me – in combination with changing the attitude, the competitiveness, and laying a new foundation – is a solid improvement. When combined with the successes on the recruiting trail, that’s overall exceeding my expectations.

I expect that with these improvements that they will be competitive in 4 or 5 other games, and could win a few of them – I’m just not counting on it.

Call Me Crazy...

…But I think 6 and 6 if not better is definitely a possibility. I am a bit of a follower of odd trends and it wouldn’t surprise me if we may see a bit of the ol’ “New Coach Effect”. Hell, it even made Charlie Weis look good for two seasons, and Sark is better at recruiting so unlike Weis it is only going to get better, in my opinion.

Here's how it's going to play out.

Idaho is win #1
Stanford is win #2 – Our first road victory.
Arizona is win #3- Without Tuitama we key in on Grigsby and Gronk. Another home win
Oregon State is win #4 – Without their stellar 2008 OL and Stroughter OSU comes back to Earth
Washington St is win #5- payback is sweet. WSU gets dominated.

These are all games I expect to win seriously. I still think ASU and Oregon have our number this year the darkhorse is UCLA. We can win there but our Defense has to play well an not let UCLA take advantage of home field.

We’ve never beaten ND even when I thought we had teams capable. I don’t think we’re going to South Bend and getting a victory but I don’t think we’ll look like crap either.

I expect to beat Stanford. I think we’ve upgrade more than they have (players, coaching) and last year was a bitter game.

Oregon State – fantastic OL that made Jacquizz a star is gone. DBs are gone…stroughter is gone. This is a year OSU returns back to the middle of the pack. I’m not really a fan of Moevao either. Locker, our WR and defense will be enough to get the road win.

Def. 3 wins

but think we will get to 5. Idaho and WSU are locks…the question is who can we take out…Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, ASU, Oregon State, Notre Dame to get three more wins. An early win againist Stanford would go ALONG way with our teams psyche.

New QB

It appears that Luck has beat out Pritchard at Stanford

Barkley has beat out Corp at USC

Scott has won the QB position for Arizona

I’m probably missing more QB changes but I think some teams are fooling themselves if they think that a QB change doesn’t affect things. Practicing well is different than playing well. It only takes a few missteps to turn the momentum of a game.

If we plan on playing an attack style of defense then we need to feast on these newbie QB.

A greedy 6-6

That puts us in a bowl game and gives the coaching staff more time to work with the players. I expect at least 4 wins, which is a big improvement from zip. Two more puts us in a minor bowl and that is the gravy.

6+

Coach Sark says “expect to win”. Even before coach got here I expected to win. This place has too much history and a tradition of excellence to be where we’ve been. It’s time everybody associated w/ Husky Football to wake up and get on board and support coach and his staff. These coaches have kicked butt since arriving and aren’t about to stop. Get on board or get out of the dam way

6+ wins this season- Go Dawgs! WOOF!!!

wins?

I think it all comes down to game one. If they win and don’t get too big headed, then that could send them on to better days. If they lose and don’t get down on themselves too much, that again will be beneficial for better saturdays. If either of these two don’t go that way, wll things may not work out for us this year as we all hope. Hopefully, Sark can keep their heads grounded and focused. All of these “ifs” are very big. We’ll see what happens in a couple of weeks.

7-5

LSU = Loss
Idaho = Win
USC = Win
Stanford = Win
Notre Dame = Loss
Arizona = Win
ASU = Loss
Oregon = Win
UCLA = Win
Oregon State = Loss
Washington State = Win
Cal = Loss

As much as I hate losing to Cal. Hopefully though, that win will put them in the Rose Bowl :-)

USC=Win?

why would we lose to LSU @ home after them traveling 10+ hours and playing in the rain, but beat an excellent USC team who’s ground attack alone can carry them right over top of us (not to mention, Matt Barkley is a machine).

The only hope we have against USC is that they have “big win hangover” from tOSU. If they’re amped up about the win and sleep on us it could happen, but I would set the spreat at 23 for USC.

by B Money on Aug 28, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

USC

There is a very good chance we beat them. First they have a new QB, Sark knows the team VERY well, and we play them tough in Montlake. Not saying we win but I think its a better shot then LSU. LSU on the other hand is traveling and doesnt know what to expect from UW…Could catch them sleeping. Food for thought.

USC

USC won’t need great play from their QB. They have the best OL in the nation and a pletora of NFL quality backs to line up and road grade teams.

by Snostrebla on Aug 29, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree here

USC is slowly going to build the confidence of Matt Barkley. That means early on the Trojans will attempt to use the strengths of their offense, which is a star-studded offensive line and a stable of finely tuned runningbacks.

It would be nice to come out of the USC game with a victory. But Pete is no dummy! You don’t think he sees the Sark influence on the West Coast? You don’t think Pete sees the tremendous job Sark has done up here in a short while? You don’t think Pete sees Washington as a legit annual contender for Roses in years to come?

Pete has to put a nail in the coffin for his own program’s good. As Bix has indicated and I concur Steve Sarkisian has Pete’s undivided attention. Pete is going to need to use the USC/Washington game a statement game. If Pete is successful in this game, I see Pete having the abiltiy to bring in any recruit he wants just by phoning or texting them. But if Sark can muster a closer-then-thought contest or actually pull off a generational-sized upset, then we’ll all see what we’ll see.

I believe Sark knows how to call an offense vs. a Pete Carroll defense. And with the Tommy Trojans bringing in a commpletely new linebacking corps, I see Sark attacking up the middle quite a bit. On the other side of the ball, Nick Holt knows the USC offensive personnel. He’s not sure how the USC offensive scheme will look, but personnel wize he knows them well. Luckily for Holt- we’ll be able to see 2 films on the Trojans prior to sharing the field with them.

But you have to be delusional (right now) if you think we’ve got a shot in hell of beating USC. Let’s take a closeer look at SC leading up to week 3.

That is why we play the game.

Any team on any given Saturday can be beat! It might be a long shot, but it is possible.

I agree with Lear's opinions of crazidawg.

We almost beat $uC up here last time and two years ago were moments away from beating them at home. $uC and Washington have an interesting dichotomy. I also think Pete Carrol is the first person that wants to see UW back where it was. UW is $uC’s ticket to the national championship game and vice versa. Put that in your juice box.

Carroll is likely of two very opposing mindsets when it comes to the UW:

- I’m sure he knows that a strong UW helps the perception of the conference, which helps USC when it comes to BCS positioning;
- I’m sure he personally likes Sark & Holt (or did) and would like to see them succeed, both from a personal standpoint and a professional one (it helps Carroll to recruit great assistants when he can point to successful professional advancement from former staff);

On the other hand:

- Carroll is all about competition, and as any highly competitive person knows, you have even more fire to beat the people you know best;
- A strong UW under Sark is going to be strong recruiting competition for Carroll;
- A strong UW threatens USC’s ability to dominate the conference

by kirkd on Aug 29, 2009 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

i hate to be the blunt one

but no matter how great a coach is, it is very hard to take an 0-12 team and turn them in to a team that can beat a national title contender. is it impossible for Washington to beat USC? of course not, especially since sark knows USC so well. but to expect him to come in here after an 0-12 season and turn them into a winning team in only one year may be expecting too much too fast. now, give him 2 or 3 years to turn this program around, then expect to win 7 or 8 games.

and on a different note, how do you expect him to beat USC and lose to Notre Dame, or LSU for that matter? IF Washington can come within 7-14 points of USC, and keep the game competitive for all 4 quarters, i suspect there is a good chance to beat both Notre dame and LSU.

It's based on optimism...

…but after 4 years of TW ball and seeing light at the end of the tunnel with Sark….well can you blame us? Just the fact that he’s brought back this kind of fire and optimism in the fanbase is worth it’s weight in gold!

what my point was

is that if sark doesnt turn this into a winning program in one season, you shouldnt lose all hope for him as your coach. like i said, it is very hard, even for the best of coaches, to turn a 0-12 team into winners.

I get ya...

…I won’t, but I gotta tell ya I wonder about some of our fan base at this point. The whole thing from a mental standpoint is a pretty big challenge. I think one thing all of us will be watching is “how” we compete. That to me is as important as anything. Bring it for four quarters and play sound football. We need to understand this is a process and to really get back it’s going to take a few years.

If you've been following...

…our threads, you’d know that the consensus here is the talent last year was quite a bit better than 0-12. When Ty became a lame duck, he totally lost the team and with the loss of Locker earlier on…well that was then and this is now.
