UW picks up top kicker

Alejandro Maldonado has officially verbaled to Washington. This is the second time Maldonado has been in the news with a commitment to Washington but this time the kid has the verbiage down and realizes that a commitment doesn't mean interest....it means that is where he wants to go to school.

Alejandro's coaches think he is the best HS kicker in the country and that is welcome news for Washington in 2010 because they will face a big problem getting the ball through the uprights in 2009.

Next to Montana...

and Kolher if we can get him…this is the biggest commit yet. #6 kicker in the country according to Scout. 11-11 and 100% on his PAT’s is phenomenal. Sark and Co. did it again…hopefully he doesn’t go Tevin on us.

You got to have that consistency in the kicking game.

Coaches Comments

“We think he is the best kicker in the nation,” said Colton Head Coach Harold Strauss at the time, who added that Maldonado was 8-8 from 40+ and 3-3 from 50+ as a junior while not missing an extra point. “What makes him so valuable is that he’s as good a punter as he is a field goal kicker and kick-off artist. So he can do it all. He can kick it out of the end zone and he can hit from 65 off grass. He’s just a competitor…”

That's exciting

To get a kicker with his skill’s and a long boot to go with it.

Now i hope Potoae joining his lake’s teamate’s and staying home, will be enough to make him a Dawg.

Go Dawg’s, Hawaii Husky.

I hope he can make the adjustment

on kicking without the tee, IIRC thats what killed the Lambo recruit kicker from Spokane (Randy Jones?)

It will be nice not to have a death grip on my chair everytime a Husky kicker comes out on the field. It’s been a rough 4-5 years.

He's a pretty good punter too

This is a HUGE get

Field position is everything in football. I’m not a big fan of Weis and Carroll’s trend of going for it so often on 4th downs. Field position is everything. Pin the opposing offense into a hole is good. Why? It makes it more difficult for the opposing offense to score, secondly it allows our offense a chance to rest, last provides us with the potential to keep the short field. Punting is an art form we all take for granted.

We need a solidified kicker/punter, especially when you are rebuilding. When you are rebuilding everything is about the field position. A rebuilding team won’t have as good a chance in scoring from 85-90 yards out. But if the we keep the field position on our side then we are working with the short field.

This is one reason why coach Sark indicated he was going to build within by using special teams and I concure 100%. I believe this may be one of many reasons why TW never succeeded. I don’t think developed the special teams enough. Field position is everything when you are rebuilding, because doing so will offer you the short field and when you have the short field your chances of scoring drastically increases.

Welcome to HuskyNation Maldonado! WOOF!!!

DJ was a believer...

…I remember him personally timing the hang time of the punters.
