Charles Garcia will not be a Husky

Charles Garcia, a JUCO forward did not meet entrance standards and will not be a part of the basketball team next year. As John points out often, getting JUCOs into the UW can be a fickle thing, and unfortunately for Garcia it sounds like he just missed the cut. Wish him all the best in his basketball future.

The upshot of this story is that it gives Romar an extra scholarship to work with this coming offseason (read: Josh Smith), as with the commitment of Desmon Simmons the roster would have been full, Quincy Pondexter being the only departure from next season's team. Though much like JUCO players, scholarships are a fluid thing and tend to change in a heartbeat. Even with the team only having 2 scholarships to give this year, I'd be surprised if Romar didn't get 3 commitments and "make it work".

Charles Garcia is headed to Seattle U

I don’t think it is a huge loss for Uw but it is definitely a big gain for Seattle U.

Huge for SU...

he’s one of the better JUCO kids out west from what I heard. I think Dollar is going to be giving Bone all he can handle in terms of recruiting the WA talent (minus the Gaddy’s/Smiths/Wrotens who will most likely attend UW if it’s in in-state school).

WSU basketball has come and gone

[In response to B Money] I tried to reply to his post but for some reason it wouldn’t let me.

Bone is going to bring in an uptempo offense. I think that is the worst possible solution for WSU. The Bennetts braught in stall ball with a shot clock and it definitely created a matchup problem for everyone in league.

The Bennetts recruited towards the stall ball offense and the nice thing is they didn’t have to compete with the same caliber of basketball players that Washington and Gonzaga were recruiting- although I am quite certain Tony would’ve enjoyed having a few of them. But he didn’t necessarily have to have athletism on his roster to run the stall ball w/ a shot clock offense.

Bone says he is upping the tempo and to do that he will require more athletic basketball talent. I don’t think that is going to work at WSU. Can Bone and WSU compete recruiting wise with Romar and UDub? Can he compete with Few and Gonzaga for that talent? No and you see that was the beautty of Bennett’s slow tempo offense, he didn’t have to recruit againts the Dawgs and Zags.

I think what we are looking at over in Pullman is “coaching suicide”. Bone isn’t going to get athletic basketball talent away from Romar and Few- just not going to happen. The Bennetts built a nice little program w/ a masterful matchup niche. That slow ball w/ a shot clock drove everybody in league fits! Bone and WSU are crazi to mess with something that works. I don’t like WSU basketball or anything associated with WSU in general, but you had to respect Dick and Tony Bennett. That stall ball w/ a shot clock was masterful. I didn’t think it was possible to play stall ball w/ a shot clock but the Bennetts made it work.

All I saw was purple

Bone

He is a very competent coach so I wouldn’t criticize him before his first game at WSU.

The Bennett’s laid a great foundation for him to build on.

There will be a transition though...

…and that can be tough sometimes. Different coach, different attitude. It may take him a few years to get things going.

This will hurt all the more as it looks like Josh Smith is going to pick UCLA. We have to hope MBA & Breshears can step up.

Smith to UCLA?

That surprises me since he is local guy that has been in Romar’s radar since he was in eight grade.

Smith is a force….but he is likely one and done in his own mind.

It’s not set in stone yet, but the word is Smith is going to pick UCLA – reportedly he feels more comfortable in Howland’s system and feels it suits him better, and that Howland will better prepare him as a big man for the NBA.

I'm looking forward

to what Dollar’s going to do at SU. It might not be fun for UW or the Eastern side of the state.

Hair,

when (not if) Dollar achieves success, he will be gone to bigger and better programs. I was surprised he actually stayed as an asst to Romar so long, guess the recruiting violation hurt him more than we thought. Pepperdine screwed it up by not hiring him.
