Huskies make change on the diamond
Ken Knutson who has been the baseball coach at Washington the past 17 years will not be returning next season and his association with the University will end on June 30th.
Knutson has provided stability to an undersfunded sports program which lack the facilities to compete with other Pac 10 members. The Husky baseball stadium is still uncompleted almost a decade after construction was started under the campaign for the student athlete.
A 1981 graduate of Washington, Knutson compiled a 584-399-2 overall record as the Huskies' head coach and went 240-189 against Pac-10 opponents. He has the most wins in school history and was named Pac-10 North Division Coach of the Year three times during his tenure. He led Washington to two Pac-10 titles, four division championships and six appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Washington State returned to the NCAA tournament this past season. Oregon State has won two national championships, and the UW softball team just fisnished winning their first national championship. Perhaps Washington which plans to complete the baseball stadium in the near future plans to ramp up the direction of the program.

FINALLY!!!
It’s awfully difficult to ramp up a program when the head coach has the personality of a door handle. Ken Knutson makes Ty Willingham appear to be an effervescent beacon of joy, wit, and charm. I worked around virtually every level of amateur and professional baseball from 1993-2006, from the lowest community college ranks to the Pacific Coast League, independent leagues, and the USA Baseball National Team program. I can say with absolute assurance that Ken Knutson was among the LEAST impressive individuals I had ever worked with during my time in the game. From game management to player development, from recruiting to interactions with his players, opponents, and umpires, I never could figure out what upper administration could be sipping by keeping Knutson in the dugout.

Interesting
Thanks for the insight because most of us don’t know much about what is going on with the baseball program.
All we know is that we haven’t been to the College World Series and there is plenty of talent in the Pacific Northwest.
Absolutely There's Talent in the PNW
Except that Knutson never got the kids to stay home. As they say about recruiting, before you can win the battles on the field, you have to win the battles in the living room. I can’t imagine what parent would entrust Knutson to mentor his/her child for four years. It was well known around the program that if a player wasn’t starting by his sophomore year, Knutson would chase him off. There was no loyalty to the kids after two years, unless he was starting or a top reserve.

It's about time!

But This Must Be Lead By The Coach
It’s well-known among the so-called “Olympic Sports” (i.e., non revenue generating sports) that coaches are responsible for leading the charge of raising the supporting funds for his/her respective team. It was thought in 1997, when the current ballpark was built, that a local, prominent Seattle home builder was going to donate $5M to fund the completion of the ballpark and have it named in his family’s honor, much like the UW’s Nordstrom Tennis Center. Word was that a pissing match ensued (with Hedges at the helm? imagine that…) and he simply decided to pass on donating the funds.
Knutson, however, simply has neither the personality nor the presence of a Pat Casey (Oregon St.), Mark Marquess (Stanford), Mike Montgomery (USC), or Pat Murphy (ASU) to make any impact. Even Donnie Marbut at WSU, an undeniable blowhard with a checkered history of integrity (see his fiasco at Edmonds Community College before moving to WSU) has surpassed Knutson for presence in the state of Washington. Ugly.
The simple fact of the matter is that UW’s Baseball facility is hands-down the worst in the Pac 10, and a complete embarrassment for a BCS conference school. Long-term success would never happen under Knutson, and the funding was never going to pick up if he remained at the helm. He should have been gone YEARS ago.

To be fair...
Washington’s baseball facilities are the worst in the Pac 10 and even with the new uncompleted field are still among the worst in the conference and the BCS. You can’t get the best to stay home with a second class commitment to the program as a whole.
Is it Knutson’s fault?
Like the swimming program the whole thing was mismanaged and ignored by previous administrations. Remember Tubby Graves Field….the coach was also the groundskeeper of that rock pile.
Say what you want about Knutson but 17 years of mistreatment takes a toll on the soul.

I've heard
there are several current players seriously looking for other schools/options and not because of the firing. Hopefully the firing can keep them here depending on the new hire and the same person said a couple of other coaches need to be gone as well.
Nothing Unusual There...
Players looking elsewhere after a coaching change is normal. Remember, this team is a sub-.500 squad as it stands and hasn’t made the NCAA’s since W was still a first-term president, so we’re not talking about anything earth-shaking. If memory serves, it’s been 10+ years since they even qualified for a Super-Regional. Frankly, I’d prefer that the new coach has a chance to bring in his own players as quickly as possible.

Look at Pat Casey's staff?
Oregon State’s Casey has recruited the PNW very well and a lot of home grown kids played on those NC Beav teams. If I am Scott- the first place I look to replace our baseball coach is Oregon State. Can we make a pitch and get Casey looking? If not we need to look at some of his top assistant coaches that can recruit the PNW.
All I saw was purple
The OSU Staff Isn't a Strong Option
Pat Casey’s staff from the National Championship runs has largely moved on. The “must get” from that staff was Associate Head Coach Dan Spencer, who got his dream job when he was named Head Coach at his alma mater, Texas Tech, in 2008. His top assistant now is a 54 year-old career Division III guy from a tiny school outside Portland, while his #2 assistant has never worked outside the Western OR area.

Nothing wrong with poaching Casey himself.
The NCAA and ESPN are trying to push college baseball into a big market sport. Why do you suppose Oregon reopened baseball and discontinued it’s traditional wrestling program? College baseball is an untapped teleivision market and ESPN wants it to succeeed. It’s right in the middle of the largest down time involving televised sports. I mean really nobody really cares about MLB, at least not until the mid summer classic- June is dead.
Oregon knows something … Do we? I see college baseball exploding onto the televised scene and becoming a bigger televised sport. This is why I think it make perfect sense to offer Pat Casey a UDub salary that he couldn’t refuse. College baseball is going to EXPLODE! Brand new College world series stadium opening next spring- it’s an untapped market.

Not Happening
Pat Casey has turned down numerous offers from top programs, including a top-dollar overture from Notre Dame after the Beavs won their first national title. He signed a huge, 10-year contract in 2006, has been in Corvallis since 1995, and has been the fundraising focal point in the multi-million dollar renovation of their ballpark (which Knutson never could, or would do for UW), including new field turf, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, and a fantastic venue for watching a college baseball game. He isn’t going anywhere, UW or otherwise.

Then the best option is...
To look at Fresno State. The Bulldogs won the college world series in 08. That team was built like those Beav teams- good pitching and sound defense, not to mention upper classmen leadership.
Look into Fresno State or Cal State Fullerton

Time to upgrade
Enough with our baseball facilities are not good enough, the weather is not good enough, this taking a back seat to OSU and WSU and being the PAC 10 doormat is unacceptable. We had a Cy Young winning pitcher and could not make post season. What a joke. Baseball is Men’s #3 sport and we are in a talent rich area. Some fans are still in this Tyrone Willingham trance “let’s give him another year to find out”. The current recruiting is a joke and the play is sloppy.
The right coach will have on problem generating the minimal amount of funds needed for a baseball stadium. Look at coach Sark – stadium is in shambles, he inherited an 0-12 team, and is tearing up the recruiting front. Baseball will return to the UW within 3 years and will be a profitable sport.
Husky Ballpark
We need to get that thing done. The track has to be moved, this would be prime time to start the preliminaries. Move the track and my understanding is the facility is going to be combined somewhat to support soccer, baseball and track. If I’m wrong let me know.

Never Heard of Incorporating the Track Complex
That is, not through official channels, only on the reader-boards. I saw the original mock-ups of the combined soccer/baseball complex back in 1995, and that is how the fields were designed. I don’t believe it’s possible to incorporate the track complex at this point, as the footprint simply isn’t large enough. The soccer stadium would have to be rotated 90 degrees, and I truly double the Athletic Dept. would take on such a cost.

Where is the track going to go?
Just asking I have no idea now that you bring it up. I thought it might surround the soccer field but if not where will they put it?

New Baseball Coach Needs to get on board NOW
Remember that coaches can start talking to recruits on July 1st. U of W has to move fast to get its coaching staff on board, or the rest of the college baseball coaches will have a big jump on recruiting.
Baseball stadiums and facilities are discussions to address after you get some feet on the ground lining up recruits.
Agreed but...
…I still want to know where the track is going to go. This baseball stadium issue is long over due. I remember seeing what they wanted for naming rights and I just thought “good luck getting that”. I can’t remember now how much it was but I thought it was way more than what it should have been. But then again, what do I know?!
