Sark & Holt get soft verbal kids recommitted

According to dawgman both Tevin Carter and Sione Potoae have reaffirmed their verbal commitments to the UDub.  This is the best news since we heard that Nick Montana was committing.  Potoae could be a Steve Emtman or a Sean Cody type of anchor to build a defense around.  Carter definitely has tremendous potential to be as good as he wants to be.

I have to be honest, I was a little worried that we might've lost two of our finest 2010 recruits and I think we would've been hard pressed to replace them with what is still on our wish list.  Not that those kids are good too, but like I said Potoae can be a "generational" get and Carter could be as good as he wants to be.

Go Dawgs!   WOOF!!!

Sorry crazi – nothing has changed with either kid. The change in status at Dawgman.com is simply an administrative change by Scout.com in how they list kids – until they take official visits to other schools, they stay listed as “verbals” with their original commitment. Both Potoae and Carter are still planning to visit other schools in the Fall…

WHERE ARE THEY LISTED AS SOFT VERBALS???

I checked both Dawgman/Scout.com and Rivals.com. They show nothing as those two listed as soft verbals. Maybe I am missing something as I surf ther websites.

The big deal last week was that Carter changed to a soft verbal because USC was showing interest in him. The same reason Potoae changed too I believe.

I've got to go with Kirkd on this one

I don’t believe in spending money or recruiting sites, so I only have access to the free info. Very recently both Carter and Potoae had been listed as soft commits do to the fact they plan on taking official visits to other schools. Now they are listed as solid commits and their commitment dates are set to when they originally committed. I have yet to read anything about either one firming up their commitment to the UW, anywhere.

Sorry Crazi, but it looks like you are reading way too much into a simple clerical change. Just like me, if you don’t pay for the info, you don’t get the whole story. Don’t forget, nothing is official until they sign on the dotted line in February. That being said, I fully expect Sark to put on the full court press on every recruit right up until they sign their LOI. I love Sark’s work ethic.

My bad...

I guess I am unfamiliar with these recruiting websites. I saw both athletes labeled as “soft verbals”, then all of a sudden I went back and they stated committed. Either way I am confident Sark and Holt get these guys next february 4th. Sark and Holt are deal closers.

On the other hand we’ve got to work some magic to get the services of DE Andrew Hutson and Hawaii native DT Lawrence Lagafuaina, both would be great gets for our defense. Not sure if we’ll get safety/RB Riley, but he is visiting even though we’re not listed as one of his finalist. Another great indicator Sark and Holt are not settling on recruits. Riley is not even one of our kids and we are going after him. Keep up the good work…

Sark’s in on some guys that on paper we shouldn’t be in on. UW is the talk of the town up and down the west coast and on through to the islands. Better believe Sark’s gonna steal more guys like Montana out of USC, ND, Oklahoma and Alabama’s hands. Might even steal their cheerleaders while he’s at it, just cuz. LOL. Do work son!!!

Come February we’re gonna be celebratin’ this year’s class. Then we’re gonna get early commits from Austin Sefarian-Jenkins and Kasen Williams

Jenkins is a monster...

Kasen has the Skyline hype, but Jenkins should be the #1 prospect in the state next year.

Diondre Toms will be another kid who could pass up Williams on the list. He’s tall and lean with good speed and by all accounts intangibles.

Jenkins is the type of kid who comes along once every 5 years (think a 6-7 Locker) who can play anywhere and succeed. I’d like to see him beef up to 285-290 and get on that D Line as a speed rusher, although he projects as a TE (and an all-american TE at that).

Here’s to another big in-state class next year! Go Dawgs!

by B Money on Jun 22, 2009 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Sefarian-Jenkins is going to be a major prospect and a top target of the UW, but don’t discount Kasen Williams – he’s got Reggie Williams potential as a collegian. When you look at his offer list already, he’s clearly considered one of the top WR prospects in the West, and probably the country.

by kirkd on Jun 22, 2009 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not discouning Kasen...

but he’s listed on Dawgman as 6-2 195 and running a 4.6. Those are more than likely inflated so realistically we’re looking at 6-1 185 and 4.65-4.75. He’d have to get his bulk and speed up to be the “Crabtree” style receiver that he comes off as. He’s a playmaker type and I’m not sure his size will translate all that well to the next level.

He’s definitely a top priority, however I think there are a few big burner types next year who can fit better and have a higher celing than Kasen. I hope we can snag him, because if he can put it together in the weight room, he can be a special kind of wideout. I just don’t see him as the “can’t miss” kind of kid that some others are.

Side Note: He also has the #1 rated QB tossing balls to him and last season had the benefit of a 3/4* receiver in Simone to spread the field with him. I would like to see him this season before I crown him as the king that .com’s seem to think he is.

by B Money on Jun 22, 2009 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He certainly benefits from his fellow WR’s and QB. That said, for a Sophomore to be posting the numbers he has so far and be the size he is already is impressive. And I’m much less concerned about what Scout.com and Rivals.com think than I am with the quality of offers he already has – to see programs like LSU, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Cal, UCLA BYU and others offer him already is very impressive.

Regarding his speed – you’re right, he’s not a burner. But there’s a lot more to being a WR than straight line speed – he’s an explosive athlete with great jumping numbers (check his H.S. track statistics: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=350111)

And as he gets more mature, his athleticism should improve. He may be too big to be a true burner, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns into a true 4.6 40 guy once he gets into a good college strength & conditioning program.

It’s all about projection, and when you consider his size and athleticism now at his age, his lineage and his growth potential, I don’t think it’s too much hype to think he’ll live up to the lofty expectations.

by kirkd on Jun 22, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Got to agree

He just finish his sophomore year, he’s not done growing yet. Plus he’s got 2 more years to improve his abilities and speed, the fact he has offers from so many top programs speaks volumes to his ability.

That's the other reason mining...

…sleepers is so important. The kids with all the accolades will get overhyped and the sleepers will possess just as much physical potential or more and be overlooked. It takes a certain amount of courage to recruit these guys knowing your “star rating” won’t be as high and your class will be down graded.

I think you overstate how much coaches care about recruiting rankings. Their job isn’t to impress the recruiting websites – it’s to win games.

I’m sure they love it when they identify a kid they think is a great prospect that nobody else is in on, but they’re not going to pursue a guy just because he’s under the radar – they have to be convinced he’s worth a scholarship over someone else.

by kirkd on Jun 22, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not saying that...

…they’re pursuing a guy just because he’s under the radar. What I’m saying is if you can identify top prospects who are under the radar you are going to benefit from that. Some of those so called “sleepers” have more potential than the big timers that everyone is recruiting.

Well, sure. Oregon State under Mike Riley proves that on a consistent basis.

And let’s be honest – a lot of times it’s not so much who has the most potential, but which programs do the best job of developing the players they have, and of picking the guys that best fit what they do on offense and defense.

I want Sark to get the best players he can that best fit his system. If they are 5-star kids, great. If not, who cares so long as he gets them to produce. Tevin Carter was under the radar when Sark offered him, but other teams caught on. Hopefully Sark can still win out in the end.

Not worried about the skill positions in terms of recruiting

With Sark and Nuss we are going to always get great offensive skill guys. The priority I see is at every position on defense and the offensive line.

If Sark’s offense moves the chains consistently and we score in bunches this next season skill guys will come to us rather then having to extend ourselves so much. It was Sark’s offensive show at SC, he coached the QBs and over saw the passing game involving the receivers, it was his playbook. We’re going to get skill guys.

Defensive End/WSwho

We need a stud pass rusher in this class. Who are the candidates? Did any of you guys read the wsu football blog linked by Condotta? Man do those clowns hate us! But I guess I would too if every time I looked around I saw Pullman while knowing full well the Huskies and the UW were in the Emerald City. What a laugh! I see LBs as another priority in this class as Mason Foster is about the only guy who has a spot locked up after this season. We need a corner back and free safety is always a priority. GO DAWGS!!

Oh and by the way cougs, how’s the recruiting going with the WOOLOOF in charge? We fired our lousy coach, in case you haven’t noticed you still have yours! LOL!

No joke...

Eastern Washington is beautiful…but I’d go stir crazy if the biggest show in town was a glorified Big Sky school.

Hudson looks pretty solid on the end. If Happy can qualify he would be another good option. Potoae is pretty yolked, and looks like a tackle more than a speed guy.

Young looks like a safety to me, but if he keeps growing he’ll play LB. And Waters is a pretty solid looking kid, not amazing but definitely potential.

I only see our other need as a CB or two and that speed back BigDave mentioned below. I like Jordan James in that spot, but I think he’s a long shot. Deonte Cooper is a kid built like Jaquizz Rogers at OSU (small and shifty), he could be a nice compliment in the backfield. We could even wait this pos. out since we have a pretty good stable of young backs right now.

You were not the only one crazy

Chris Fetters was on that right away. I think both end up at UW anyway. Without an early signing period these kids are announcing way too early anyway in a lot of cases.

Can someone review for me:

Exactly what are the current rules for contact with early verbals. My understanding is that they are no different than other prospects who have not “committed.”

Just wondering what we can/are doing to keep the Montanas, Patoaes, etc. in the fold until signing date, and away from predators?

by Verge on Jun 22, 2009 10:17 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I believe you're correct on that....

….you have quiet periods but that affects all recruits equally. The schools get so many official visits in which the school pays the recruits expenses to visit. Unofficial visits are another animal altogether though. If the kid comes up on his own I think it’s pretty much whenever he wants to.

Right

I’ve tried reading the D1 Recruiting Calendar (@NCAA.org), but between Dead vs. Quiet vs. Evaluation vs. Active periods, combined with optional “starting dates”, it gets pretty confusing. And of course, there’s still no early signing period for football, unlike some other sports.

I gather that after September 1, the coaches can call the senior recruits once/week (except for those certain periods), but wonder about other options for keeping the kids excited and involved, e.g. “academic contacts”, team materials, etc.

Also, I find nothing about guidelines for schools contacting commits to a different program, which appears to leave nothing but a gentlemen’s agreement (hah!) between a given player and relentless predator programs.

So are there any special rules or tricks for keeping early verbals under wing (besides “just win, baby”)? Or are we all getting overheated about today’s whim of a 17 year-old?

by Verge on Jun 23, 2009 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

…you can send them as much in the mail as you want. If they call you or visit you, that’s a different story. But there are SO many rules it’s hard to keep track. On the verbals, they basically don’t exist. A verbal means nothing and changes nothing for the kids who have made them. That being said when a court views a “verbal agreement” there have been times when it is viewed as a contract.

I think generally these verbals hold up. There are always a few surprises but for the most part, the kids who’ve committed sign on the line when signing day comes. There are occasionally surprises though they really don’t happen often.

The best way to lock in these recruits, get more top recruits, and get the best recruits next year is to WIN football games. If this team can win, everything else will fall into place. With all due respect to Vince Lombardi, winning IS everything!

I believe Horizon has planes painted in the colors of WSU, Oregon and Oregon State as well. Not sure if those planes actually get used in connection with their respective schools or not…

by kirkd on Jun 23, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The funny thing is . . .

The UW football team can’t use that airplane. First, the Q400 only seats about 70 people. Second, even on the shortest flight (Seattle – San Jose) it would make a 1.5 hour flight much closer to a 3 hour flight. Needless to say, I love the paint job, but we will need an Alaska Airlines airplane, not a Horizon Airlines airplane. Too bad they don’t have a 737 in that paint job!

It’s correct. Fetters knows the deal, but won’t talk about it, which suggests to me something happened between the coaches and V.J. and/or his family that caused them to pull the offer. I suppose the story may get out at some point, but Fetters wishes to respect their privacy and won’t be the one to spill the beans.

No idea if it’s something V.J. did, something his coaches did or something his family did, but there apparently was some kind of falling out with the UW. It’s frustrating as fans to not know the deal, but there are always going to be things that happen privately that we really have no right know about.

If we could score Kolher that would...

about end it on the OL. Porter, Riva, Tanigawa and Kolher (and I’d like to see Marboe get an offer) could pave the way for Nick to throw us into the rose bowl in 2013-14.

I’d like to see us land Troy Hill, we need a quick athletic corner badly. We should lock down Potoae and land another DL or three (fingers crossed that we land Hudson and offer Iona). Flowers and Moore both snubbed us for Ookla recently and we’re not on any other top DT’s.

Pretty much everywhere else looks (dare I say) solid for the next couple of years

by B Money on Jun 24, 2009 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remaining Recruits Off the top of my head

We really need Kohler and another OLine prospect, hopefully Rowland from AZ but Tanigawa or Di Paolo would be a good pick up…the more the merrier.

D Line, we need Hudson and Potaoe to reconfirm his commitment. With Moore going elsewhere and Flowers out supposedly we will need to figure out Iona’s status of getting accepted and go after him, though he seems to be high on OSU. There have been talks of a couple of Hawaii DT’s coming last week on visits, one who is 6’2 305 lbs. Marsh is not out of the picture either, espeically with a commitment from Kohler.

LB is another position of need. If I was a LB I would think seriously about UW because of the depth. We have 2 seniors and (I believe) 2 Jr’s. This would give you a shot to start as a RS-Fr. We have commitments from Waters and Young, both who could move to Safety but seems like Waters will play outside. With VJ out of the picture we will have to go hard have Shipley and Burnett. From what I have read, either would be a great pick up as they are both big physical LB’s. I think a solid class should have at least 2 LB’s every year because of their ability to play special teams and other positions, such as Safety or FB.

DB…what can you say. By far our weakest position on Def. and possibly the team (I know about our O-Line but DB’s are on par with them in weakness in my mind). We are in a good place to get Troy Hill but Josh Shaw is who I really like from what I have read. Big time offers and has size (6’2) and speed. As for Safety, it seems to be a somewhat down year. Young could move there and if we could pick up Flowers from AZ, that would be a huge grab but far from reality. To be honest I see us getting DB’s later in the process, after senior year.

RB’s, we have Davis and Fogerson (both big boys) but are really missing the speedster. Sark will most likely bring in a burner to compliment Davis. USC always had a stable of runningbacks and I imagine he would love to do the same at UW. We do have a lot of young talent so I dont see this as much of a need but a really fast homerun kind of guy could be just what we need.

QB- Montana…were set.

WR’s are quickly becoming a position that I bet we dont offer any more kids at and might even pull some back depending on Carter. The 6’3 4.4 Carter has been getting serious about USC and might get that offer soon, at which point we might be a goner. He is a sleeper kid with GREAT size and speed who could end up the best of the group. We also have Lowe and Kearse already so 3 WR’s this year makes sense.

Other than that I think Sark & Co will be fine and I look forward to a top 25 recruiting class when its all said and done.

by bigdave967 on Jun 24, 2009 6:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently there’s some concern about Chris Young qualifying – he’s got work to do. Your general point about LB depth is a good one – I don’t get a sense yet that the coaches are real comfortable with the guys behind Butler, Tuiasosopo, Savannah & Foster.

Within a week of spewing out bogus news about reaffirmed commitments we lose Carter to Cal. It is still early in the recruiting process and anything can happen, but from here on out I am not going to announce anything from dawgman again.

Losing Carter doesn’t necessarily cripple this class. WRs grow on trees- they are everywhere. Losing a gifted QB, OT, or DT would be costly. But a budding WR who is coming into his own? WRs grow on trees so not too worried.

I hope so...

scout says we only have offers out to 4 Safeties. I think Chris Young could be a great FS, but his listed numbers say he’s big for the secondary. I don’t know how fast he is, but if he can get his speed up, he hits like a truck. He’s got a mean streak too, which we need in that spot.

I’m hopefully going to make it to a few HS games this year. I’m going to get to a Bothell since it’s close and Colin Porter transferred. I’d love to go check this kid out in person though.
