I need help from my fellow UW fans!
John, feel free to delete this since its non football and a personal post but I could really use the help. I am currently looking to apply to UW for their MIT program (Master in Teaching). Since I am a Business Management major I know its a long road, but one I want to pursue. I have emailed the appropriate people in regards to making sure that I have all my documents in order but I was wondering if anyone had any extra advise or maybe knew someone who could ultimately help me put myself in the best position possible obtain admittance. I know its a long shot but I am hoping someone could help me out. If you have any information please feel free to let me know and I will contact you personally.
Heres to praying that two dreams are reached...teaching and going to UW!!
Thanks for all your help.

Thanks but no thanks
I got the ball rolling and so far the Education department and Admissions have been nothing but helpful. Besides, I bark better than I quack.
I'll talk to my sis...
…she has some connections and she’s getting her masters in teaching right now. I’ll need a few days to contact her and get some advice. I have other relatives and friends who have kids at the UW now as well as uncles and aunts who are alumni. I’ll see what I can find out.

She teaches in the Bothell area...
…Snohomish County. She has a lot of coworkers who should be able to help. The UW Bothell is right down the road from her.

I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your help and taking the time to reach out to your sister. Once you are able to contact her I will send you over my personal email so we can talk further.
Thanks!
No Teaching Degree...Business Degree
The lady in admissions said that you do not have to have a bachelors in teaching to be accepted in the MIT program but I will need to take the West-B in the subject matter as well as 60 hours of classroom experience (I have already passed teh Praxis 1). I wil have to take subject matter classes for the first semester, at which point I will complete my classroom work as well. I might do North Seattle for a semester first. There are alot of different options that I am working throught right now with UW admissions and my own mind but I pretty much will do whatever I need to to finish this.

Well I guess my sis wasn’t much help but below is her reply.
I know nothing about the UW’s requirements for the master’s program. He needs to call the education department and have them send some information about the program, or go in there in person and get it. I assume it may have some stiff requirements with gradepoints, but I don’t know. I did look into it myself at one point. It may have changed, but I seem to recall that it would be tough to do if you’re working. Programs change all the time, though. That would be my advice. He has to get the information and apply to the program

More info...
Tell your friend to consider Lesley University. They have many different programs like Technology, and they have cohorts everywhere. I know they have one or two in Eastern Washington. It’s not the UW, but I love the program, and it totally applies to the classroom.
She also said make sure it’s what you want to do. Teaching is no “piece of cake” are the words she used. I would suggest teaching the older kids. She teaches 4th grade. I worked with 7th graders as a volunteer and I thought they were great.

Thank you for all the help
after talking with UW admissions about the Masters program, I am going to have to look to get my certification at another institution then do my masters at UW the following year. With their requirements it would almost be necessary so that i can get all the prerequisite classes in first.
Please thank your sister for me and thank you too dawgfan.
PS I am doing this full time so that i can get it done as soon as possible and I want to teach high school history and social studies so i can coach as well as teach. Also i will look into Lesley University. Thanks again!
You're welcome....
…sorry I couldn’t help more.

bigdave- my advise
Public education is flooded with history and social studies teachers. Look at the substitute teacher lists and I’ll bet over 75% of them are certified history or social studies teachers waiting for a job to open.
If you want a full time job as a public eduction teacher, my suggestion is obtaining a teaching endorsement that is in high demand, i.e. math, science, english, foreign language, or special ed.
Getting the coaching job is the easy part of working within public education. Getting the fulltime teaching position is the dicey part. Especially during these down economic times. School districts are looking to make cuts- cutting teaching positions and having larger classrooms. But if you are wanting to become a fulltime teacher/coach then you’d better pick up another teaching endorsement to get the job. Once you get the fulltime job in math, science, english, foreign language, or special ed., you can then apply for the teaching positions you really want to teach like history and/or social studies. But history and social study teachers are a dime a dozen. You want to go MATH, Science, language, or special ed. if you want to get a job as a teacher. I have some experience with public education and I know that history and social studies teachers are flooded and folks are choosing to be a substitute until fulltime jobs open up, either that or they relocate to school districts that are not the best.
Math, science, language, and special ed. will get you your fulltime teaching job, where you can coach as well. Hold out for history, you could be sitting on the substitute list for 8 or so years. Good luck.
I completed my teaching certification years ago, and I am thoroughly glad I got out of teaching. I loved the kids and my subject content, but I couldn’t stand all the beuacracy (sp?) and politics that went with the job. Good thing I didn’t pursue a teaching certification in language arts, because I can’t spell!
All I saw was purple
thanks crazi
A really good buddy of mine has been talking to me about special ed and I might look into that further. Math was my second love or I might go elementary ed where i have been told Males are in demand. Again thank you for all your help.
My sister is into the math part of it.
She at one time was thinking about becoming a counselor, I guess she’s pretty stressed dealing with the youngsters and the principal. She also pondered becoming a principal herself and like Crazi said there are a lot of BS politics that go on.

Yeah I knew a guy who...
…was a new teacher but he realized that they just don’t pay very much. He went back to Seattle and took a job as an actuary for Boeing Company. His math ended up paying off for him after all.

Ok, Ok...
Duk4Lif3 I do think it is funny, it made me laugh, but remember the spirit of what we are trying to do here going forward.
Dave I think with budget cuts and increased competition you have to live with you own numbers these days. UW is extremly hard to get into right now at any level.
I figure with budget cuts and being out of state that it wasnt going to be easy...
but cant say I didnt try. Plus I’m hoping my overpriced out of state tuition will help ease some of their pains…we shall see. Thanks for the insight though.
