Recruiting the Rock- Hawai'i a big key to Dawg success

White sand beaches, black sand beaches, volcanoes, palm trees, tropical breezes. All things Hawai'i is synonymous for. Oh and don't forget one more thing: Great football players. It is no mystery that Hawaii has put out top players in college football for years, and many teams over the years have capitalized on the amount of rich recruits the islands foster on a constant basis.

Enter the Washington Huskies, who during our own tenure as a program have benefited from many players from the Aloha State. Players such as Olin Kreutz, Ink Aleaga, and even our current stud Daniel Te'o-Nesheim. The Dawgfather himself knew the importance of recruiting the islands, and Washington has always been a familiar name in Hawai'i for years. I frequently hear stories coming from Hawai'i about former Dawgs talking up UW to the local kids or a recruit being related to a former Dawg.

Coach Sark knows how much of a hotbed Hawai'i is, and lucky for us has a great relationship with the local high schools there, as he recruited it with much success during his time at USC. The intriguing thing about top recruits from Hawai'i is that only a few of them show up early on anyone's radar until very late in the recruiting game. (Obviously the distance can be a problem) This gives any coaching staff that enters the state early the opportunity to find undiscovered talent... diamonds in the rough if you will. Needless to say "too little too late" is not a term we will have to hear when referring to Sark & Co. hitting the recruiting trail early and hard, as they're already in on the best and little known talent in 5-0 and extending offers ahead of the Pac.

Washington, California, Hawai'i. The times that we've been most dominant in our history we had been recruiting all three of these states heavily. With Sark we will regain our prominence in the islands and keep this pipeline not just open, but a first stop for future Dawgs. I look forward to seeing more All-American athletes made at Montlake that were born and raised in those beautiful islands in the middle of the Pacific.

GO DAWGS!!

And a link to a recent story of a recruit that Sark is hot on the trail of...gotta love it

I was also watching the Hawaii vs. Washington in a bar filled with hawaiian’s and i had my husky jersey on, go dawgs.

The morile of my story is washington is the perfect fit for hawaii football player’s and there alway’s welcome with the DUB, aloha.

Sark just recently offered a kid from Hawai’i named Taz Stevenson. How sweet would it be to have a player named Taz on the team, lol

Don't know much about the Hawai'i recruits, but. . .

. . . a little while ago, I read about this WR/DB junior who attends Santee HS here in the Los Angeles-area named Tevin Carter. It was around the end of high school track season here, and much has been written, locally, about Randall Carroll (WR/DB- LA Cathedral High)- a highly-rated WR who had previously committed to USC way-back-when, but come LOI-signing day this past Spring. . . young Mr. Carroll spurned USC’s offer. . . .only to sign his letter of intent to attend UCLA. Well, that and. . .the fact that Randall Carroll is one of the nation’s fastest 100/200 meter sprinters at the high school level, and is damn near world-class- for all intents and purposes.

So, why is Tevin Carter a name all Husky fans should know? Because Coach Sark has successfully recruited Tevin (will attend UW in Fall 2011), and not only that- Tevin came close to beating the unbeatable Randall Carroll at the CA state T&F championships this year. As it is, Tevin ended his junior track season with the #9-ranking in the boys 100 meter dash- and even better, as the #2 ranked 200 meter runner. . . IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA!!! He placed 4th in the 100 at the state meet, and 3rd in the 200 (both races were won by Randall Carroll).

Here is Tevin’s 2008-2009 football stats from MaxPreps dot com.

Well acquainted with Mr. Carter

and it’s been said on some sites that if USC offers, he’ll likely take it. I hope they’re wrong because with his size and speed, well, I think you know what I mean. It’s fun to imagine Kasen Williams and Carter as a tandem in a few years.

When the UW was going strong, they got a lot of very good players from the islands. I like the fact that Sarkisian already had strong recruiting ties to Hawai’i – he’ll need to utilize them to get the Huskies back to the top of the conference. It’s a great pipeline to cultivate, and there’s enough of a history between the islands and the UW and enough of a local Polynesian community that it should be something that Sarkisian can take advantage of.

Lambo

Jim Lambright was one of the first football coaches to exploit the riches of the islands when he was an assistant under DJ. As time went on other schools wised up and started recruiting over there. There was a time though when we always broght the best home from Hawaii.

Hawaii has become "Little California"

I think the very first program that recruited Hawaii was BYU. LaVell Edwards and Norm Chow use to go over there and fill up their rosters back in the early 80s. Then Washington followed and had a nice little pipeline coming inland from Hawaii. Word has since spread like a wild fire and every Pac 10 school, Colorado, Nebraska- hell even Charlie Weis (Notre Dame) is recruiting the islands.

Hawaii has become the “little California”. Everybody recruits Cali and now everybody is recruiting Hawaii. Yet I think Sark has the edge. He played under Edwards and Chow at BYU- he knew where kids were coming in from. He coached at USC and the Trojans have taken all the best kids off the island.

We need to put a fence up around our own state- priority No.1. Secondly we need to recruit the hell out of both California and Hawaii- Sark and Holt both know these recruiting trails. Last but not least try to take away the best kids from Oregon and the inland states (UT, NV, ID, MT, and BC). But make no mistake Washington kids stay home, and rebuild the pipelines to California and Hawaii.

I don’t think Hawaii is that big of a hotbed for football players. I think the state of Washington has better talent across the board. How did Hawaii get the reputation for being a hotbed? Take one look at the University of Hawaii. The Rainbows (Warriors) are 3,200 miles away from there closest league rival and if you play for the U of Hawaii, you don’t get the national reconginition (no ESPN coverage). The big star recruits all know this and if they want the bigtime they have to come to the mainland. Believe me, Hawaii doesn’t have all the prep talent that is advertised by the media. The fact is Hawaii does have some very good prep football players, but none of them want to play for the Rainbows- they’ve got to go somewhere that is why Hawaii has become such a meat market.

All I saw was purple

Hawaii is just part of it...

…I agree with you Crazi that first priority is Washington and then California. If you pluck a few from Hawaii and the rest of the west you’re golden.
