S&C Question

Ok so I posted this on Dawgman as well, just wanna get an idea about the speed of the players coming out of high school and the transition to college coaching and speed. My question-- is it safe to say that most of the guys we are recruiting will get faster when they come to UW and have real deal S&C coaching? I know under the former regime the linemen got slower but guys like Jake Locker and Flea have gotten significantly faster compared to what they were listed as in high school. If the rule of thumb is that they will get stronger and faster, I'm stoked because some of the verbal commits we have are already burners (Lowe, Carter) Hell even Nick Montana is listed as a 4.6, pretty damn fast imo. Anyways, any S&C junkies out there that can shed some light on this for me?

It depends...

…but I would think all of these kids will be faster when they get into the S&C program at Washington. The other thing is, though it may becoming less common nowadays, is the fact that some of these kids don’t run timed 40s very often in high school. I know that was the case with Rashan Sheehee, he was listed as a 4.6 guy coming out of highschool but after a few years at Washington he got way faster than that. I’m thinking he broke into the 4.3s. Of course that was back in the early 90s and I would think most highschool football players are getting up to speed with what everyone else is doing now. I think there can be a big difference between hand timing vs electronic, especially when it’s in the interests of all those involved to “fudge” faster for their athletes. Interesting to note that our S&C staff was talking about just that in their video clip. Anyway it is interesting to watch these kids develop.

My favorite thing is reading what the perennial top ten schools list their player’s 40’s as some blazing fast number like a 4.3 only to have them go to the NFL combine and run a 4.5 or 4.6. LMAO.

Looking at some of the offers Sark has put out there is kind of telling about speed and athleticism being his top priority. Some of the slower guys that are highly rated aren’t getting offers and guys that have the speed and playmaking ability yet aren’t the best at their position are. Just my thoughts..

Yeah exactly...

…so many of those 40 times are hyped. I remember a few years ago the TOP time was like a 4.4 40. They were raving about a certain linebacker who during the same combine ran a 4.5 flat. Marques Tuiasosopo supposedly ran like a a 4.7 or 4.8 40 though during one scrimmage that I watched he outran the entire defense. I think there is something to that football speed thing.

I'm kinda pumped to see Mays' numbers

at the combine this year if he attends. He’s super fast and I’d like to see if he can really get that sub 4.3 I’ve been hearing about.

They certainly got faster under Don James….it seemed they got appreciably slower under Willingham. Only time will tell…I happen to think the players are now in good hands.

Strength and Conditioning

Players should be getting bigger, stronger, and faster, depending on their position of course. My high school track team brought in speed coaches once a year that worked with the UW on a regular basis. They taught how to run, what part of the foot to land on and push from, proper form and technique, and different workouts to improve foot speed, muscle memory, and overall speed.

There is a certain amount of natural ability that can’t be taught, but even the fastest guys can get even faster. Really makes you wonder what went on over the last four years, and how much effort was being put in by players and coaches.

Under Ty's S&C program if a player wasn't fully developed when he came to UW...

he wouldn’t get much better he might actually get worse. Sark runs a program that is much more rigorous than Ty’s, so a thing called “player developement” may happen in Seattle for the first time since the Ty’s reign of terror.

A 40 Time is only a gage

What is important to these coaches is the ability to explode out of your stance. I agree with Lear in that muscle memory can be developed w/ conditioning. And that is what this all comes down to is the proper conditioning program for each position on the field. Running fast in a 40 is not the same as football speed. A 40 time is a gage so that coaches can compare notes on prospects. Evidence: Jerry Rice ran a horrible 40 time through out his entire pro career. Yet many coaches look at what he did on the football field and the only explanation is the idea of exploding out of your stance, the ability to change directions quickly, and having that next gear.

I am quite confident that our S & C coach Lewis has a conditioning program already established for each and every position on the field. And we all know that a defensive tackle’s condtioning program would be quite different then the conditioning program for our quarterbacks- right? It’s all about football speed, the 40 time is just a tool to gage one player from another. It’s all about exploding out of the stance, lateral movement, flexiblity, and switching gears.

Vertical Leap

Don James was more concerned with the vertical leap because it translated so well into power and speed off the snap.

Vertical leap made Nate Robonson play like he was 6’5.

by John Berkowitz on Jun 17, 2009 5:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh I agree John about the vertical jump as a great indicator for exploding out of the stance. All that power that is generated in the virtical jump is the same power needed in exploding out of your stance.

It also translates into speed

That was a great way to see through the bs that comes from recruits and their coaches. Most good sprinters have awesome verticals. One doesn’t always equal the other, but it’s a great indication.

Hey Chaz and the rest of the usual suspects here at UW Dawg Pound!

I’ve been crazy busy lately and haven’t joined in commenting as much as I would like to, however- as it is, I’ve still been perusing and reading most of the content here for the past month or two.

I consciously abstained from commenting on the “USC/Coach Floyd resignation” threads. . .in a way, I wanted to see how my Trojan brethren handled themselves and wanted to mainly witness the back and forth from that brouhaha. (major thanks ALL OF YOU for all what you guys wrote and opined. I’m glad my Trojan brothers carried themselves with respect to the UW Dawg Pound, the members, and topic content. And well. . . .I won’t say much about the Bruin commenters- they do well enough on their own to have neutral observers like you guys form your own opinions about their take on the USC issues)

That being said- I thought y’all would enjoy a “topical” read of a column that was printed in today’s LA Times. It’s done by the Times’ NFL football columnist, Sam Farmer. He’s a good egg, not fully jaded or hyper-critical of the business that’s the NFL. He basically calls it like he sees it, and he’s a pretty temperate (disposition-wise) and fairly unbiased (I know? how can anyone possibly be “unbiased”. . . especially a journalist!). To be honest, I’ve read this guy for 7 years and I STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT TEAM HE FAVORS????)

To that end, I give you this link of his. It’s regarding Coach Todd Haley of the Kansas City Chiefs. Quick take of the column: obviously everyone knows that Coach Haley is a “new coach on the block” and the Chiefs’ new GM (by way of NE Patriots), Scott Pioli are in a serious mode for “turnaround” for the KC franchise. Short of the long of it- with Pioli’s permission and Haley’s brave and remarkable undertaking- the players on the KC roster are currently going through a serious Strength and Conditioning program and what’s unique about it is that IT IS NOT A CHOICE OF THEIRS! It is a franchise-wide EDICT to lose weight, gain speed, and put on muscle. . . .OR ELSE!

Check it out, I think you all will enjoy it. When I read the article I knew instantly that I wanted to take the 5 minutes to post a comment to Chaz’s Fanpost regarding Coach Sark’s proclamation of making the Husky football players more athletic and lean for the upcoming season and beyond.

Happy Father’s Day to one and all with family/children!

You're welcome Chazz

How long ‘til college football starts up again? Dang! I can’t wait to watch the fuck outta some football. Real football.

(I’m wondering? Is it all the yelling? All the high-fiving? The huggin’ & knuckle-touchin’? BEER! It’s gotta be all that drankin’? What is it that makes me so retarded for football season? To that end, what is it that makes me so pleasurably stupid to watch re-run of a 2005 game that I’ve already seen 10 times prior?) I’ll tell you one thing: football IS THE ONLY thing I can play or watch that can make me catatonically pleasured . . .THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE A WOMAN!

UW starts fall practices on Aug. 10th...

and kickoff against LSU is Sept. 5th.

I think that is the first week of the season…I believe the Zeros also play that Thursday the 3rd against Boise State. That should be a helluva game, Go Smurfs!

Also...

I think I’m more pumped for practices than for the LSU game. I want to see Gaisie, Batts, Boyce, Price and Shamburger. I think all of those guys will contribute (maybe not 09’ for the frosh) pretty quickly, namely Gaisie and Batts. Hopefully that will help push the other CB’s and somebody comes up big for a starting job.

I mulling over a job offer in Portland though, so I may rely on the rest of you for regular updates if I take it.

Only 48 days, damnit I’m pumped!

Tivao

I hope the “bowling ball” makes it in. I would love to see him stuff the center and create that “immovable force” in the middle of the line!
