Cool and Collected

Is it fair to compare Joe Montana to Nick Montana? Not yet because I didn’t see Joe in high school. Kid Montana looks good and throws a good ball. I see great footwork and I see him established as a pro style QB. Maybe not established enough to take control of a college offense, but give it time. This kid is going to be a stud QB.

If you were a Seahawks fan in the 80’s, did you root for Montana and the 49ers? Our Seahawks were on again off again and led by Dave Craig. The Hawks never amounted to much in those days, we had a few good playoff teams but never made it to SuperBowl Sunday.

So I ask the question again- were you a Joe Montana and or 49er distant fan? For me, when it came to football, I bled Husky Purple- I am completely and totally out of control when it comes to college football saturday and the Washington Huskies. Saturdays in the fall is my passion. So when it came to the NFL, I really didn’t have a team. Sure I watched the Seahawks because they were the local team, but I didn’t care too much about pro ball growing up. I loved everything their is about the pagentry of the college game, alway have, always will. With that said I usually followed pro teams with players I could associate with.

I remember it was all about the Steelers, Cowboys, and Packers in the 60s and 70s. All of a sudden this blonde haired kid pops up onto the NFL scene and is playing QB for the up-start San Francisco 49ers. I remember him wearing an unusual QB number. No.16 was a tad odd of a choice for a quarterback to wear. The big numbers for QBs back then were 12, 11, and 10. But 16? Since the days of Montana, the No.16 for football is and has been as popular as basketball’s No.23- guess who?

Yes I was a HUGE fan of Nick’s dad! Nobody was more cool and collected in the huddle, no one could spark a come from behind win like Joe- well Elway might have something to say about that. And Joe was all about SuperBowls. Before Tom Brady, it was all about Joe. The Niners w/ Joe under center won four SuperBowls and the era sort of defined a generation. The Niners became what the Steelers, Cowboys, and Packers were- they were a dynasty and from my eye, the most dominant dynasty of them all in arguably the most competitive era of professional football. Those 49er teams had great talent surrounding the QB. Rice, Craig, Rathman to name a few. Montana never had the best numbers and stats, and I beleive he could careless. It was all about winnning SuperBowls and vaulting both arms into the air after a Montana to Rice TD pass indicating TOUCHDOWN!

Indeed Touchdown Joe was phenomenal. To me, two guys embody what a true QB should look like and play like:

1. Joe Montana
2. John Elway

Nobody was better at the position and it could be flip-flopped between Elway and Montana, but to me the next guy in line is a distant 3rd. What does all this translate to? If Nick has learned how to play QB the way his dad played the position then surely we’ve got something really special. I don’t want Nick to be the second coming of Joe. I want Nick to be Nick, I want him to use and apply what he has learned. Joe was always the cool and collected QB with the ball in his hands. If the Niners needed a 1st down, Joe got the ball in there for the 1st down. If they needed a TD for the win, Joe would march the offense down the field and put the team in a position to get the needed TD for the win. And with Joe being Nick’s dad, I’m quite sure some of that cool and collectiveness has been established with the youngster.

Nick I welcome you to HuskyNation BABY!

Go Dawgs! WOOF!!!

Yep, you weren't a Seahawks fan . . .

it’s Dave KRIEG. I was a big Seahawks fan growing up, and I can still do a great impression of Krieg dropping back to pass, trying to throw the ball, and having the ball end up 10 yards behind me!!!

Never really warmed up to the NFL

As young as I can remember I’ve always loved college football, most notably the Washington Huskies. Just something about the pro game that I didn’t care too much about. I loved the fact that the band played the music- in the NFL is all piped in [lame]. In the college game the fans are out of control wild, in the pro game you need “specialized” music to get fans riveted [lame]. In college a school can do what they want to their uniforms, they can wear black cleats and black socks if they want, they can cut their jerseys up if they want; in the pro game it is all cookie cutter and you get fined if your stinkin’ socks are riding up your waste [lame].

And I hated it when the college game followed the pro game with instant replay- they still get it wrong! They will reverse a call even in their is no video evidence to back it. If you can’t see the placement of the ball then the call (by rule) must stand as called on the dam field! How many times have I watched our Pac 10 crews reverse a call based on a guess via the video replay? No video evidence then the call stands as called on the field- get it right for pete’s sake.

What score are you prognosicating now? If it’s UO v. UW than way to go. Way to come into a blog and rip on a team at the lowest point in program history while your team is at the highest point in program history. UW still leads the series 58-37-5 so come back in 21 years and see if you’ve caught up.

I’d be more worried about your situation with recruiting down there in Eugene. Seems like you’ve lost a couple of big ones and the coaching staff is getting in bed with some kids with bad additudes and bad handlers.

by B Money on Jun 14, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

You know B Money just let the little things go. This guy is a clown. All he wants to do is come on here with his nonsense and make a complete moron of himself. It’s quite obvious that this clown doesn’t see the great job our new coaching staff is doing, either that or he is envious that an 0-12 program can rip through the West Coast and land big time recruit after big time recruit.

Oregon has only gotten good because Washington has been going through down years and it’s about time they get back to their mediocre ways. I am relieved that the ducks hired Chip Kelly to replace Belloti and as predicted things seem to be heading in the direction I envisioned it would be w/ Kelly in charge.

I completely understand that John wants to welcome outsiders to the blog and I’m cool with it too. But when morons come on like this just to rip you- that is where you have to draw the line. Give it 3 years Duck4Lif3, Washington’s coming all the way back. Not only are we going to pass you and we will. USC is the target and only Washington, Ucla, and Arizona State have a legit chance of dethrowning USC for league supremacy.

I know Crazi

but these kids make me so mad. We’ve had LSU, UO and I think we even had a Notre Dame guy recently rip on us. Frankly on the WSU guys on here are they only ones that have had any sort of class (as much as it pains me), Jonnycougar I’m looking at you. You’re probably right that I need to let it go though, I just can’t pass up a chance to rip a pompus duck fan.

Keanon Lowe is a big get and pretty indicitive of the culture change that’s happening in the NW.

For the record, I’m 24 and I deal with Contractors and Engineers on a daily basis — I have to bite my tounge 20 times a day — and when I can let loose one somebody deserving I tend to do so. I’ll try to keep it on the up and up from now on.

Notice to Duck4Lif3

Here is how it works around here. Everyone is welcome as long as they contribute to the overall health of the discussion.

When it becomes more of a trolling for reaction type of thing I delete your post and give you a friendly warning. If that doesn’t sink in you end up getting the boot.

I am sure you have some great things to contribute from a UO perspective and if you concentrate on that we will all get along together fine. You might just find you like it here because we talk some good football.

by John Berkowitz on Jun 15, 2009 9:03 AM PDT reply actions

I was just..

Stating some facts kind of like prrbrr. Anyway one thing we all can agree on is Sept. can’t get hear soon enough.

It will be interesting to see how the huskies and Steve Sarkisian do in his 1st season.

What are your exceptions heading into this fall/goals set for team?

by Duck4Lif3 on Jun 15, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Expectations?...

…that must be what you meant. I’d say they vary depending on who you’re talking to. Some fans think 4 wins or so and some think 6 wins are possible if things roll right. Having said that, someone else will come in here and spin something different.

by doubledeucedawg on Jun 15, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Expectations?

4-6 wins most likely.

Willingham was such a bugger we really don’t know what to expect to tell you the truth.

We do know one thing and that is sooner rather than later Sark will have us back n top.
