The official beginning of the REBIRTH of the Purple and Gold

The 10th commitment in Washington’s heralded 2010 class, Nick Montana gives Sarkisian a player to recruit and build around. Sarkisian has reopened the pipline down into Southern California in recruiting. This is a big impact signing on national scale. Heaps would have been nice, but from a PR stand point signing Nick Montana is huge! Montana’s commitment speaks volumes about Sark’s ability. His recruting of athletes is on a national scale this may be the most high profile signing the University of Washington has ever had. One of the great parts of the commit is that it’s a headline on CNNSI, ESPN and FoxSports! Just look at the pub already up on ESPN – it’s the top story on their college football recruiting page, and it’s a choice that is lauded by their recruiting “expert” Tom Luginbill, with Luginbill saying Montana is a better fit for Sark’s offense than Heaps and suggesting Montana was in fact Sark’s top target. Sarkisian's dedication to to being the Head Coach at the University of Washington is shown by his no nonsense approach to the game, his attention to detail as shown by Husky practices, the annual spring game and recruiting. The coaching staff's one on one coaching approach of being in the players face when mistakes are made on the field. Coaching done on the spot, not days later. I am not saying it's going to happen this year: but from all indications people. WERE BACK !!!

Thanks for the commitment Coach Sarkisian

The Dawgs are barking loud again!!!

After last week's extreme low

the commitment of Nick Montana this week has been awesome. What a contrast! I love how he did it too…no PR agent, no presser at a lame sports pub, no stupid hat thing. He approached it with class and humility, just like Jake Locker did a few years ago. And after listening to him on Softy and Brock & Salk, I gained even more respect for the young man. He has a great head on his shoulders and will be an excellent face for Dawgnation.

About recruiting and publicity… I think Nick’s commitment is gonna send a message to the rest of the top recruits in the west that UW’s record last year is old news and means nothing, and the train is gonna be moving back towards the Pac10 title a lot sooner than anybody would ever expect. Get on or get left behind. I love it.

We got the Right Guy!

All the indications as to why Heaps chose BYU is on the wall. In the last 2 months I’ve been lobbying hard for Nick Montana over Jake Heaps. It had been publicized early on that Heaps was a Husky fan growing up, Heaps was spotted at UofW basketball games and during spring ball, yet the kid stayed away from committing for way too long. That told me that something else besides attending Washington was on the kids mind.

Then I got to thinking last winter about how Sark pulled in both Nick Holt and Doug Nussmeir as coordinators. How many of us thought getting Holt was outside the realm of the imaginable possibilities? I lobbied hard for getting both Holt and Nuss and it worked- not that I had anything to say about it. Since it worked I got online and decided to start lobbying hard for Montana instead of Heaps and it worked. Was I shocked that Nick Montana signed? Answer: NO! Getting Nick Holt was the biggest boost thus far in the Steve Sarkisian era. I had a feeling that Montana was going to pursue a pro style college offense in order to get acclimated as an internship professional football player. I clearly thought Notre Dame was the logical choice since his dad was a star in South Bend. Yet it is over 2,000 miles between home and South Bend. Would Montana instead go to USC? Not without a proven college offensive coordinator, something USC doesn’t have right now. So from my angle it was between Stanford and Washington. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I think the Trees are pretty stocked at the QB position, whereas Jake Locker has two more years of player eligibility at Washington. No question Nick Montana will redshirt, then for 1 season he’ll watch from the sidelines to see Locker in action. After that Montana will be in a position to take the reins of the Sarkisian pro-friendly offense for the next 3 years. All of this is predicated on the idea that Montana can win a starting job once Locker graduates. I see greatness in Montana, I see greatness in the Washington Huskies.

Furthermore I don’t think Jake Heaps wanted to have to compete for a starting QB postion. I think Heaps knew regardless coach Sark was pursuing Montana too and with a name like Montana- it would’ve escalated into a tough QB competition to get the starting job. I don’t know Heaps and I don’t pretend to, but I think he sort of wanted to take the easy route to becoming a starting college QB. Afterall how difficult would it be to beat out a kid named Montana for a QB position? I know I wouldn’t want to find myself in that situation.

Montana will lead us to a Rose Bowl, but he won’t be the first. I believe Jake Locker will get us there before he graduates. We’ve got 2 years to put it all together. Like I said earlier, this thing is going to explode into orbit very soon, if it hasn’t already.

Go Huskies! WOOF!!!

But wait, it could be better

I love crazi’s enthusiasm, but under his plan Montana would start for 4 years. Jake has 2 left, Montana’s senior year in HS and his RS year at UW. Then 4 more years to start, unless Price has some say in the equation. It all sounds good to me.

by dawgdude on Jun 12, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I screwed up

My bad, I was a year off. Montana will redshirt during Locker’s senior season. After that, what a failed to say is he will have to develope physically, learn the system, and win a starting QB position. That won’t be easy. Like you said Keith Price will have something to say about it. Competition is good! It brings out the best in all. Who ever wins the starting job then- it’s not like it’s yours forever. You have to battle continuously to keep it while you are here. Sark is bringing in the USC format of competition. Battling for a starting position is a daily activity at SC, who knows the starter may go down and the No.2 will have to step in or if the No.2 is THAT GOOD, he may see more playing time by switching from say OLB to a DE, or a RB into a slotback.

Montana won’t be offered a starting job, he’ll have to earn it. Something I think Heaps was trying to avoid. I guess you can do that if you are a No.1 QB prospect in the country, but will it make him better in the long run as a QB? I think Heaps made a wise choice in BYU, yet I think we made a wiser choice in getting Montana over Heaps.

My money is on Price...

to be the starter when Jake leaves.

by Snostrebla on Jun 12, 2009 11:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't be suprised...

If Jake goes down (knock on wood) again this year I think Keith will entrench himself as a solid #2. If that happens it will be very hard for Nick to pry the spot away from a experienced starter with the tools Price has.

If Jake is healthy for the next two years Keith will see limited playing time and Nick will have a year to redshirt before competing against a guy who is in roughly the same spot (with an extra year of coaching). He’ll fit better in Sark’s system because of the intangables and (according to reports) better pocket presence and Pro-Style skillset. I’d like to see them take 2 pro-style QB’s this year and move Price around. Most schools were recruiting him as an athlete, he’s alot like Jake in that he can play alot of places on the field.

I like Ronnie for how he came in and did his best, he showed alot of heart last year…but I think he’s just outmatched here.

by B Money on Jun 12, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ronny wasn't ready to assume anything, he was thrown into a dumpster fire!

Team quit around him … some of the coaches called it a season prior to the end of the season. TW had his last day wearing purple circled on his calender. It was bad all around.

I think it was great for Fouch to get playing time last season. In a season like that, it was great for Ronny to get in some valuable reps. Now he is going to get burried on the depth chart, we all know that. But if and when we ever need him again, just think of how last season’s experience will pay off? I respect the hell outa’ Fouch for staying in there and seeing to it we finished the season without a victory.

Note: the last sentence in the above paragraph is a play on words. We didn’t have a chance in hell of winning a game last season because we caved in and called it a season moments after Locker went down with a season ending injury. Ronny had no chance.

by dawgfan22 on Jun 12, 2009 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whomever follows Jake a QB

…will be that much better because of the competition.

As importantly, we’ll have ‘talent’ at the backup position. Depth is hallmark of great teams and a concern Sark is addressing.

More good news?

The nucleus of a great OL line may be shaping up…Riva…now Colin Porter. The kid from Redmond may “only” have 3 stars, but boy does that guy look like a born OG!

I believe the “Montana halo” will bring in a couple more “name” OL hosses. Erik Kohler visits this weekend…hmmm.

2010 is really starting to smell like a great Dawg class.

The only question I have is will it be the best Dawg class ever?

That Q would have been preposterous last November. Today it’s a really possibility.

The value of a High Profile signing.

“Porter, who played last year at Redmond but is transferring to Bothell for his senior season because his family is moving, said he had been thinking about making a final decision a lot the last few weeks and that the commitment earlier this week of quarterback Nick Montana of Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village, Calif., helped make up his mind.”

Is Montana the next great Husky QB?

I’m not sure about that (though I think he will lead us to bowl games) but now we have someone to take over once Locker leaves. I hope we can get him a O-line that is better than the one Locker has, though. If you don’t have a good O-line it may not matter how good your skill players are, but I think Sark will have a O-line ready by then.

Montana may turn out to be a great QB (and I hope he does) but let’s not forget about Keith Price – he’ll have a year of development on Montana, and from watching their videos I think Price is also a top-shelf QB and will be right in the thick of the battle to succeed Locker.

Just curious, a serious question:

How well have you guys been recruiting on the O-line from the class of ’10?

I didn't want to wait for your answer, so here's the numbers per scout.com:

Oregon: 4 total commits
4 star rating: 1
3 star rating: 3

Washington: 12 total commits
4 star rating: 4
3 star rating: 7
2 star rating: 1

Any questions?

I don't think he's over to start trouble...

I frequent ATQ (friends close enemies closer) and they do a good job over there, even though they do think Masoli is really the best QB in the land.

Curtis White looks like a monster on the D line and they’re high on a couple other D line kids. I though Keanon Lowe was a pretty big coup, all signs seemed to point to him staying home until he committed out of the blue.

Honestly though I don’t know how good a class Chip is gonna haul in. qr, do you guys (honestly) have any reservations about Chips recruting chops? I personally think that the nationwide net you guys are casting out could backfire alot easier than it can succeed.

Hopefully, you are right

I could easily be wrong here, and if I am, I apologize, I’ll freely admit that crazi’s got me in a fighting mood lately! But isn’t there a lot of easy ways to find out the answer to his question that would be faster and far more accurate than asking Husky fans?

Either way, it’s good to see the Huskies kicking Oregon’s butt in something football related!

I personally think that the nationwide net you guys are casting out could backfire alot easier than it can succeed.

I’ve gone back and forth about this too. For awhile I was on the boat of “Great! We’re setting out targets in Florida, Texas, etc. This is the height of recruiting.”

Then, as you seem to be keen on as well, I started thinking “Are we missing out on diamonds in the rough locals for stars from SEC country? Are we abandoning the local product that we could be nailing down easily?” All the near-misses and runner-ups for us from the far-away athletes is really frustrating considering that you may have had a hundred times easier affair with an athlete from, say, northern California.

But now I’m back more or less to the original thought in my first paragraph. We want to put these tentacles out into SEC country high schools. Because, whether it may be a tough pill to swallow or not, they do have the supreme talent. And an abundance of it.

I loved getting Curtis White. He’s a talent from Sheldon High in Eugene, and he’s recognized as a beast all around the nation. It showed me that the coaches really are spreading out the recruiting board. We’re not the University of Oregon/Florida/Texas-Eugene. It’s exciting to go out and get someone like Ethan Grant. (note: Don’t believe for a minute that Grant’s “reopening of his recruitment” is a decommitment. He’s a Duck.)

But in an abridged paragraph, the said nationwide net could be a blessing and a curse. And to answer your original question, yes, Chip Kelly is a strong, strong recruiter.

Proof

“Chip Kelly is a strong, strong recruiter” – As you might have read, I give crazi crap all the time for not backing up his arguments with proof. I’m curious what proof there is that Kelly is a strong recruiter? His previous experience at a much smaller school isn’t going to give us much information, you just can’t compete for top talent at a non Div 1 school. Seen as how he is just taking over at Oregon and only has 4 recruits (not sure how many signed under Bellotti), I’m not nearly as close to the situation as you, but isn’t it a bit early to know if he’s a strong recruiter?

Not much to go off of

The recruits he has so far seem to have good quality, but given Oregon’s success lately, the number of recruits is anything more than average. Sark on the other hand, took over an 0-12 program that has stunk for years, he already has 12 good quality recruits. Although it’s only been a few months, Sark deserves credit as doing a good job of recruiting so far. Kelly on the other hand, has been part of the Oregon program and took over from a very successful coach, I just don’t see enough info to call Kelly a strong recruiter. Not saying he isn’t a strong recruiter, just don’t see evidence of it yet.

PS – Rivals has a job history of Kelly, it says he was the O-Coordinator and QB coach at NH, wasn’t he the head coach?

He was a strong recruiter before, yeah.

Now he’s abdicating and doling out lots of recruiting duties to his underlings it seems, which would be weird to me. Bellotti himself didn’t do much recruiting the past few years, it was largely Kelly and Alliotti, et al.

Either way, no, he has not been a head coach prior. Though I was under the impression he was at one point at NH as well… weird!

Anytime you have a first time head coach you are taking a big risk. For some reason that I haven’t discovered yet, some of the best coordinators in the game make really lousy head coaches.

When the Huskies won a National Championship....

…they had a class that was rated very high which had a lot of highly touted guys that hardly ever played. I’m talking about the 92 class. Jason Shelley and a defensive tackle from Cali who transferred. So success doesn’t necessarily make a strong class. These guys or more aptly they should be termed “kids” have a lot of adjusting to make it in Division 1 ball.

I tend to think

that it’s less about diamonds in the rough as it is about the concentration of big time programs down there. There is a huge surplus of talent in Big 12 and SEC country but there are also a surplus of big schools with traditions and local ties. Near misses (like Bryce Brown, although he’s probably 1 and done and brings alot of drama) can hurt a program big time if they start adding up. Talented kids as a whole don’t tend to wait around very long. If you are counting on a kid from FL and he gets that UF, FSU or UM offer and he stays home, you can be left with sub par talent.

maybe 2 and done on brown

he’s got talent, I glad that kid can’t sully up the Pac-10 with his handlers. We’ve got enough going on at USC already.

That's sorta the point though, really

Whoever leaks out of their small Mississippi town as their school’s all-time leading rusher but doesn’t want to play in an offense like Auburn’s or be coached by a d-bag like Lane Kiffin, it’s a possibility they’ll be looking at Oregon. I give you Darron Thomas of Texas, Chris Harper of Wichita (though he’s bouncing now), LeGarrette Blount of Mississippi, then the lower-tiered Remene Alston of North Carolina, Justin Roper of Georgia, and a target in Ethan Grant of Florida.

It’s about putting Oregon in as another school of interest to the kids. For every couple misses, there’s a direct hit on a real stud. And I like that possibility.

West Coast kids

They want to stay home and play at either “their” home state schools or in conference so they can play some of the games at home and be closer to their home state. By recruiting that far away you, number one are really gambling in my opinion, plus there is no connection to home there at all. There is more than enough talent in California, Hawaii and Washington. You throw in Nevada, Utah and Colorado and well you get my meaning.

It's not looking bad...

We have seemingly strong verbals from the #19 OG (Colin Porter) and the #65 OT (Ben Riva) both out of local Seattle area schools. Riva is a bit raw, but he’s 6-6 / 285 and seems to have the tools to do very well. Colin Tanigawa is the #43 OG (he shows interest but no offer from UO) and he lists UW as his favorite right now.

We’re also fairly high on the list of Nick Montana’s teammate Eric Kolher. He’s the #15 OT prospect (all of these are according to scout.com by the way) in the country. It looks like we could start getting some serious meat up front come February.

Also, Senio Klemente is a big kid who played quite a bit as a true frosh last year (on the D line) has been moved over by the new staff and looks to be our starting RG as of the post spring depth chart.

Sounds like a good haul.

Can’t overlook the trenches. If you guys can hold them down (which is assumed you will), and you develop them, that’s the first step to getting good and great seasons. A line chocoblock of 4* OGs and OTs can make Ronnie Fouch successful.
