Cameron Dollar To Seattle University

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/huskyhoops/2009/04/15/cameron_dollar.html

The Huskies lose a great assistant coach and a great recruiter in Coach Dollar.

Some of the names that are being kicked around to take his spot on the staff are:

Curtis Allen: Former Husky who played for Lorenzo Romar. Remains the best free throw shooter to ever don the Purple and Gold with 86.7 career percentage. Allen is a local product, having attended Wilson High School (Tacoma). He was on Ken Bone's staff at Portland State, so it stands to reason that if Romar wants him, he'll get him.

Mark Gottfried: Former coach at Alabama is the most qualified candidate. He has head coaching experience at Murray State and Alabama, and knows the Pac-10 after having spent 8 years as an assistant at UCLA, where he helped win a national title alongside another assistant by the name of Lorenzo Romar. In his 14 years as a head coach he has gone to 7 NCAA tournaments, including an Elite 8 run with Alabama in 2004. He also guided Bama to the school's only #1 ranking in the AP poll.

And the most interesting name I've heard thrown out:

Elston Turner Sr: Yes, the father of freshman shooting guard Elston Turner Jr. Why is this name so interesting? Well he's currently working with the Houston Rockets, and we all know how much recruits love to work with guys who have NBA experience. He played in the NBA and has coached for 3 different teams: the Trailblazers, Kings and Rockets. Clearly, the man has the ability to coach if he has done so in the NBA for 11 years, and he has a relationship with Lorenzo Romar. An added bonus to bringing him on campus? Elston Turner Jr. would have the benefit of his father being a University employee, meaning that his tuition would be payed for, which would give the program an extra scholarship. As it stands right now with only Pondexter being a senior next year, Romar will have just one scholarship to give out. An extra would be huge.

Great points Cassino!

Being an old SU fan I think it is an interesting move.

Dollar is more than equipped for the position. From a coaching and recruiting perspective they couldn’t have found a better man.

I also think if Dollar has early success they are going to find it impossible to keep him at Seattle U. I don’t know Cameron personally but I think he has his sites set on something bigger than a new program that can’t play in the big dance for four more seasons.

Love the candidates.

SU got a great hire, Cameron needs to win and recruit cleanly and he’s up the food chain quickly.
Very intrigued by the other names of Gottfried and Turner sr. I am not a fan of hiring ex head coaches but basketball seems to do better in that respect than football. With those names, Allen may be the best fallback. This assumes both Gottfried and turner know Xs and Os and can recruit cleanly (worry about the SEC lineage).

You know, I’m not sure that it works that way at UW. My parents are UW employees and I don’t get my tuition waived. Maybe it works differently in terms of UW Med or the athletic dept. or something. I think that’s kind of just a U$C quirk.

Not like the Utah Jazz... it's about REAL jazz. Go Dawgs, Go Blazers!

Could be

Or maybe it’s an athletics thing. Either way, it’s probably not going to happen, as I’m sure Elston Turner Sr. is a long shot to be hired.

Hmmm. I know way back in the day when my dad was considering between job offers with the UW and the State that one of the considerations in favor of the UW was I’d get to attend for free (he still chose the State job). Maybe that’s no longer a perk?

Coach Romar:
“We will have someone in place pretty quick,‘’ he said. "We’ll go out and get someone we feel is best suited for our program at this point. We’ll have something soon.’’

Tuition Waivers

I am pretty sure that a tution waiver for the kids is one of the benefits of being a coach at UW. They may even have that for tenured professors.

Dollar

I didn’t think he would take the job because it doesn’t pay very much. It is going to be quite a challenge for him to get that program built. One thing I know is Gonzaga will not be on any future SU schedules until SU joins the WCC.

Jeff Goodman just threw out this name: Raphael Chillious

He’s the head coach at South Kent, where Isaiah Thomas and MBA went to school. He’s also coaching the Jordan Brand Classic, which Abdul Gaddy will be playing in on Saturday, and Romar will be in attendance. If he’s the guy, I’d expect an announcement Sunday or Monday.
