A few observations from scrimmage
Attended my first Husky practice today in several years. Stood on the North sidelines close to the East end zone.
Overcast day today - the sun tried to poke out a couple times, but it was mostly a really windy day, with the wind making for chilly conditions. Good practice for what the team will encounter in late Fall.
The sideline perspective was good for observing coaches, players & recruits, not as good for seeing all of the scrimmage action.
Overall, it seemed like the defense had the upper hand, especially the d-line vs. the o-line. The QB's were frequently under a lot of pressure, with quite a few touch sacks (QB's aren't "live"). No real big runs, but I couldn't really tell how much yardage they were gaining so for all I know what looked like 2 yard runs may have been 6 yard runs. I'll let others that were in the stands with a better view of the field chip in with more description of the scrimmage and who really stood out.
The coaches are as advertised - very active, always teaching, always hustling. Cozzetto is a real perfectionist - I spent a few minutes just prior to the scrimmage starting watching the o-line drills. I'd probably need to see them again 2-3 more times before I can really make any valuable observations about them. I'll say this - it's interesting to see the variation in body types and shapes among them, from the tall and relatively skinny Terence Thomas, to the massive Morgan Rosborough, to the more squat Greg Christine. Ben Ossai looks better, but I think he's still got more work to do to get into ideal condition. Rosborough too. And Habben still needs to work on his quickness - he got beat around the edge a few times.
Saw a number of recruits there, including (but not limited to): Colin Porter (a big kid), Mike Marboe (looked relatively small standing next to Porter), Chris Young, Michael Hartvigson, Darius Waters and (of course) Jake Heaps. Interesting to note that for pretty much the entire practice, Heaps was standing with a kid named Kyle Van Noy. Van Noy is LDS and had committed to BYU last year, but got a DUI and so far as I can tell from the recruiting sites has delayed enrollment until next year. I'm not sure what to read into his being at this practice with Jake, if anything, but I thought it was interesting.
Lots of former players there, including (but not limited to): Darin Harris, Caesar Rayford, Brock Huard, Hugh Millen, Tim Cowan and Greg Lewis.
Saw the Dawgman.com crew - Chris Fetters, Kim Grinolds, Scott Eklund, as well as Softy.
Interesting stuff. If I'm not swamped with moving in to my new house next weekend, I'll try to make it out to that scrimmage as well, and am definitely planning on going to the Spring Game (should be pretty easy now that I'll be living just 2 blocks north of U-Village).

Transfer
If he transfers he will have to sit out another year but he and Jake will then be able to play at the same time…Kyle Van Noy will have one year to sit out and Jake will most likely redshirt. Interesting that he was up here from NV. Not a simple Saturday drive.
Why would Van Noy have to sit out a year if he never enrolls at BYU? Is it because he signed a letter of intent?
He would have to get a release from BYU if he signed a letter of intent or sit out a year.
So if he signed this year he would be available to re-sign again next year. At least that is my understanding. Doesnt this happen every year…kid signs letter, coach leaves, kid has to get a release from school and they always have crazy stipulations like no team from our conference or on our schedule for the next 2 years, etc. Maybe I am wrong and if I am please feel free to correct me again.
According to reports I read online, Mendenhall offered to let him out of his letter of intent, but Van Noy went ahead and sent it, confirming his commitment to BYU. However, because of needed ecclesiastical endorsement to start at BYU, he wouldn’t be able to enroll until January 2010.
So if he chooses not to enroll at BYU and switch to UW (or some other school), he could sign a new letter in February and start play in fall 2010 (when the UW goes to BYU for an ironic twist). Does he have to ask for a release if he never enrolls, or can he just sign a new LOI? I would even imagine that he could enroll at the UW in the spring if he chooses to do so, or would he have to wait for his scholarship to start fall 2010?
Am I correct? Would he be able to join spring football if he choose to come to UW?
thanks for the report Kirk, and the controversy
The nice thing about going to a practice is that you can do what you want. I watched this one from the stands because it is hard to see all the action from the sideline, especially with people in front of you. I missed the interactions between the coaches and their players that Kirk saw, but that is interesting also. You can even do both.
I never heard of Van Noy until about 5 minutes ago. Its interesting that Heaps thinks so much of a receiver that is slated to play linebacker. It sounds like a few YACs to me after the catch. I hope he is interested in the UW now. Clearly he could come here in the fall of 2010, but the spring of 2010 is above my pay grade without a release from BYU. Where is Slick Rick when you need him?
Jason Wells
Does anyone know how he’s doing? I can’t even remember the injury he has this last time.

IF he can come back healthy the kid will make a serious impact.
A friend of mine who regularly goes to practice tells me that he looks great except for the boot.

True
Wells is a load. Very tall for a DB and looks ripped. He seems like a vocal leader of the team, always talking to everyone on the sidelines.
He does look good
Hopefully he can recover quickly, he does look like he’s been spend a good amount of time in the gym.

Van Noy
You know this might not be Mendenhall’s call. I think DUI’s are seriously frowned upon at mormon-owned BYU. In fact it may be enough to block his enrollment at BYU. Do something stupid at BYU and you are kicked out of school. I’m very surprised that a QB named Jim McMahon made it through Provo without serious consequences for his radical behavior.
Is Van Noy on Sark’s radar? He might if he is attending practice with Jake Heaps.
All I saw was purple
I had a friend who played football at BYU
Had sex with with his girlfrien….she felt guilty…told her bishop….he told the school….and he was gone.
That was over 30 years ago but I think they still do that.

What a crock!
I remember talking to a guy who was/is LDS he just happens to be a little different. He’s got really long hair. Anyway he said he decided to go for a jog around a track at BYU but it didn’t last long, he was escorted off the premises and told not to return.
