The Monday Morning Wash
Washington won its first outright conference basketball championship since 1953 this past weekend by slugging out a tough win over tenacious Washington State. Some WSU fans commented that they thought it was odd that the students rushed the court after the win but when you haven't done something for 56 years it deserves a celebration.
Washington has won at least a share of the conference basketball title ten times since 1915. UCLA has won 30 championships in that period of time with most of them coming after 1961. The Bruins have won 24 Pac 10 championships since 1961! I think anytime anyone other than UCLA wins the Pac 10 championship it is big news.
Here is a list of how many times the conference members have won or shared a conference title and the last time they accomplished the feat.
- UCLA (30) 2008
- California (14) 1960
- Oregon State (12) 1990
- Arizona (11) 2005
- Stanford (11) 2004
- Washington (10) 2009
- USC (7) 1985
- Oregon (4) 2002
- Washington State (2) 1941
- Arizona State (0)
Junior Day
The football team had its annual Junior Day this past weekend. The Huskies entertained around twenty five local players. OT Ben Riva passed on going to LA for the UCLA version and visited UW instead. There were no known commitments that came out of the weekend but plenty of kids are close. It is obvious that Sark and company have taken recruiting to a new level.
Pac 10 Tournament Schedule
The tournament starts Wednesday with WSU playing Oregon and Oregon State playing Stanford.
The Huskies will play the winner of the Oregon State-Stanford game on Thursday at 2:30 pm.
UCLA will get the WSU-Oregon winner in the nightcap at 8:30 pm.
Arizona and Arizona State will play noon and Cal and USC will play at 6 pm also in Thursday in a full slate at the Staples Center.
Should UW win its first game it would then play the Arizona-Arizona State winner in the semifinals on Friday at 6 pm.
The championship game will be played on Saturday and I like the chances of Washington and UCLA squaring off for the tournament championship.
Husky Spring Practice Schedule
Fans are welcome for all practices and of course the Spring Game.
Weekday practices start at 4:00 pm and the Saturday practices will be at 1:00 pm.
A couple of no brainers to remember. No cell phones and photographs. Watch practices and enjoy the privledge it but be limited in what you share on line. Use some common sense.

Spring Game
We should all try to meet at the spring game. It was a lot of fun last year. Recently we’ve had a good turn out, there were like 10000 people there last year. We could try out some of those tailgate recipes!

I am going to try like mad to get out there.
Could be a great event to enjoy some football and give me the quick fix i need until the season starts.
That sounds like a good idea...
I’m a bit embarassed to say but this will be my first UW game at Husky Stadium. I’ve been to a couple at OSU when I lived in Salem, but I’ve always been to broke to go. I need some people to meet and tailgate with. If somebody plans something, put it in a fanpost. I think it would be cool to meet some fellow crazed UW fans.
OK than...
…let’s plan on it. I’m going to try and get a hold of Nathan (Ware) and see if he’s still going to do his tailgate. Last year we had it by the climbing rock. Realdawg kind of tag teams it with him. Last year we got to meet Jake Locker’s parents and that big safety kid from Texas, can’t remember his name right now. His dad flew up from Houston, nice guy and a firefighter like me. Anyway we had brats and some side dishes. It was an aWesome day, plenty of beer too! I’ll get my wife to come and cook her stuff and we all just kind of chip in for Nathan who provides the brats. Like I said though he may or may not be involved this year. We’ll see. If not I’ll contact Realdawg and see if they’re going to do something. Give me a few days and I’ll let you know.

Nathan
Nathan will be out there. He is just taking a blogging break. He actually might start doing some stuff again this spring on the blog.

Arizona
Gosh I had no idea Arizona only had 11 titles in BB. I don’t think they joined the league until like 78 so that’s probably skewed a bit. Interesting though.

What a great weekend for Junio Day!
With the bball game and everyone storming the court and hoisting IT up on their shoulders im sure it gave all of the juniors goosebumps and a glimpse of what support they can get for football.
John,
Do we know if any recruits from CA made the trip?
I am not sure
Usually Junior Day is a pretty localized event because kids travel and eat on their own dime.
We haven’t seen a complete list of visitors from Junior Day yet.

Arizona has been hot
These are Pac Ten, AAWU, and PCC conference championships.
So 11 titles since 1978 is pretty impressive.
I amnot sure how many WAC and Border Conference titles the Wildcats and Sun Devils won prior to joining the Pac 10 in 1978.
Wooden, Miller, and Olson
have provided the majority of the Championships since 1961. In Arizona, ASU was the better WAC team. In the Pac, Lute Olson changed all of that. Now that Olson is gone (but not gracefully), UCLA probably has the edge again, but the Pac-10 has a lot of good coaches.
Junior Day
Any idea who might be close to committing?
Also, has Larry Dixon been offered yet? I know we already have a power back (Davis) committed, but either guy could be a converted LB with ease.
No offer yet on Dixon
the coaches are still evaluating players. Those evaluations will continue through the May combines and the camps this Summer. As usual there will be kids who will pop up on the radar during their senior years. Hawaii for example is a place where the recruiting evaluations start much later for everyone but the elite few.

Fogerson too...
…another power back. He’s listed as a fullback though.

The other Washington team
How could they question fans rushing the court after we beat them to win the Conf. title?? I dont care if we win 10 in a row, fans should always be excited and rush in to congratulate the team and celebrate! After 365 days of watching Seattle sports, this is a great moral boost for the city.
Looks like Cousins signed with Memphis…bad choice. Could have been big dawg on campus with Gaddy and IT next year. Even though I am sure he will be good in Memphis too.
Not a surprise
Calipari is a snake oil salesman. It’s real hard to pull guys away from him.
One has to wonder though, with Calipari relying so heavily on one-and-dones recently, if the bottom is going to fall out of Memphis at some point.

And I thought Romar was oversigning
Memphis (without early entries) will have 16 scholarships for next year, and they’re still chasing John Wall.

Yeah...
…I totally DON’T get that! OUTRIGHT Pac-10 champs!! GO DAWGS!!

As a school that hasn't won in almost 70 years
I think Coug fans GREATLY underestimated how much the “outright” title meant. We’d have rushed the court after clinching a share for sure.

Yep. I thought it was odd that Grady would question UW fans storming the court after that win – it was obviously all about winning the Pac-10 title outright. The fact it was after beating the Cougs was just icing on the cake :)
All that said, I’m enjoying perusing Coug Center – despite the expected disdain of all things Husky there, I do think they do a good job of staying rather civil and above the fray of outright taunting and provide level-headed analysis that isn’t overly homer-influenced. I have a lot more respect for the guys that run that site than I do for Barry Bolton, that’s for sure…
Agreed!
I think they do an excellent job of being fair, though of course probably a few things that seem like jokes to me come across as anti-UW. Same thing here, John does a great job of allowing both sides to have their say, as well as not being overly-biased himself.

Grady and Nuss are great guys
You just have to respect their Cougness.

The big trend in today’s college basketball is rushing the floor, so what’s the big deal? Please keep in mind that the folks rushing the floor are kids. I don’t see a lot of 30-somethings and 40- over the hillers rushing the floor. I say let the kids have a little fun and quit worrying about the social misconceptions of college athletics. I think I’d prefer a little adolecent-frenzied behavior over an adolecent-fallen down drunk, which by the way we happen see in Pullman on most occasions (no pun intended regarding the Coug QB though).
In my book it is perfectly okay to rush the floor out of excitement for something completely and totally phenomenal such as…
1) buzzer beater for the win over a top 5 program
2) buzzer beater for the win in tournament play
3) Conference championship (shared or won outright)
I think WSU fans are just boored out of the freakin’ minds to be worrying about Husky fans rushing the floor. Good Grief MAN!
All I saw was purple
Spring Practices
I work at the Health Sciences building, so when I get off work I’m heading over a few hundred yards to watch practice at 4:00 pm in the spring. I feel blessed.
That is awesome!
You realize that now that we know you are so close you will be called upon for daily updates…no arguments allowed. Sorry.
Great fans...
…ran into a fellow DAWGfan at the grocery store before the game Saturday. The guy told me he’s had season tickets for over 50 years! We have got some loyal fans! I guess he had two sets but had to consolidate down to the lower bowl because of his wife’s health. I would like to tailgate with that DAWGfan!

Congratulations
to Coach Romar, well deserved. I personally didn’t think he would get it due to political coolness. Also, congrats to Jon, JD, IT and Venoy, also well deserved individual honors. Now put them away on your mantle and remember what got you this far this year, TEAM
