Washington Clinches Pac 10 Crown

It wasn't pretty but it seldom is for this blue collar bunch of Huskies but Washington was able to overcome a ten point deficit in the second half to beat Arizona 83-78. Washington was able to overcome a horrid 19-35 night at the charity strip to clinch their first Pac 10 championship since 1985.

The Huskies were led by Jon Brockman and Isaiah Thomas who each scored 19 points. Quincy Pondexter had 12, and Justin Dentmon chipped in 10 for the Dawgs. A big key in this victory was the Washington bench which provided plenty of minutes and 23 points.

Jordan Hill was a true warrior tonight for Arizona. He scored 27 points and was basically down to one leg for the last five minutes of the game after spraining his ankle. I don't know a lot of players who would have returned after that injury. He earned a lot of respect from everyone in attendance this afternoon.

The difference in this one is simply the quality depth Washington brings to the table. The Huskies frankly don't match up well with the Wildcats and that depth was the factor that put them over the top in the last ten minutes when Arizona began to get into foul trouble.

Next up for Washington are the Seattle University Redhawks on Tuesday night and the conference finale next Saturday against WSU at Hec Edmundson. If Washington can defeat the Cougars they will win their first undisputed Pac 10 championship since 1953.

Heaps was supposed to be at the game again. Apparently he and his family are regulars at the games. Can’t hurt for the basketball team to be making it fun to be a Husky fan again…

I went to Bob Houbregs Basketball Camp

Bud Withers of the Seattle Times said the ball was still stuffed and not pumped with air when houbregs and the Huskies were playing in 1953.

Since I was born in 1958

I can’t remember the ball not bouncing.

I thought stuffed balls went out in the 40’s.

Congrats Husky Nation

I hope that results elsewhere give you guys no special motivation to beat the Cougs, just good ol’ rivalry emotions. We could really use a win over you guys to keep our end of season run on track. Great wins for both Washington schools today!

ESPN College GameDay

I thought it was flat out rediculous that the ESPN show highlighted more Arizona highlights then UDub’s. See this is why we have this East Coast bias thing. It’s all about perception. The highlights should’ve been on the winner of the game who claimed the regulars season championship. Would ESPN’s College GameDay do this to Carolina, Duke, UConn, or Ucla? Really disrespectful!

Washington has a lot still to play for. We haven’t received national recognition or respect yet. This should fuel a beat down of the Cougs next Saturday and a good run thru the Pac 10 Tournament.

The regular season championship has been won. We need to play for national respect now. Their are a few who seem to think the Pac 10 will get 6 invited to the tournament. I guarentee you that we will only get 5 to the Big Dance, national respect isn’t there for our league. Our league is better then the Big 12, SEC, and Big 10 and we need to prove that in the NCAA tournament.

Congrats Cougs, but the Dawgs are the champions of the Pacific 10 Conference. WOOF!!!

Preaching to the choir!!!

Its nonsense Crazi. The East Coast bias is Horrible out here. Like I have said before and something that John eluded too. This team is a blue collar rough and tumble team. They give many highlights, they dont have that one high flying razzle dazzle BIG name player that ESPN likes to put on highlights. Jon Brockman is a great player but he isnt throwing down dunks on guys. Either way, we will show them whats up after we take out Seattle U, WSU and win the Pac 10 tourney.

I’m sick of ESPN’s coverage. It’s all about the Big East and ACC w/ a splash of Memphis, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Ucla.

We need to continue to play like we have something still to play for. I just hope that we don’t stop playing simply because we’ve earned a Pac 10 regular season title. This program was a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament a few years ago and have reached 2 sweet sixteens during that same span. Yes we had two unheralded seasons, mostly due to being rather young. But the core of our team is upperclassmen now as it was a few years ago and still no respect.

We need to beat Seattle U and WSU and go into the Pac 10 tournament with a chip on our shoulder. I think with the right frame of mind this team could posssibly win every game leading up the the NCAA tournament. The only guy on the College Gameday set that offered any respect to the Dawgs was Bobby Knight. Jay Bilis and Hurbert Davis basically laughed at Pac 10 basketball. They agreed that their is not one great team in the Pac 10, but a lot of good teams. Both Bilis and Davis agreed that anybody from Washington to Stanford could win the Pac 10 tournament title. Let’s prove the “experts” wrong. We’ve still got a lot to play for- not getting national respect should be HUGE!

Go Dawgs! WOOF!!!

Jordan Hill

LOTS of respect for that guy. He was pretty much unstoppable until he rolled his ankle. To come back in the game in that condition, and continue to perform like he did was very impressive.

I really hope we had some unofficial visits for FB recruits at the game. Winning a Pac-10 title at home was a really special moment for this team.

Hill

I’m going to have to agree with you Phinney even though I don’t want to. Ask casino, I haven’t offered Zona any respect all season long. Maybe the reason I have disrespected Jordan Hill is becuase of a conceived notion that he plays with a uncordinated style and his awkwardness (sp?) is hard on the eyes. Hill must be stronger then he looks. The guy looks frail in the paint and for some strange and peculiar reason he has owned it all dam season long. I’m giving the dude his props- he definitely earned my respect this afternoon. He was actually standing on his ankle. He didn’t roll his ankle, he stepped on it. OUCH!

The guy truly has my respect.

Truth

by thecassino on Feb 28, 2009 7:13 PM PST reply actions

Speaking of truth

… I think it is time for thecassino to come out with some truth on Venoy Overton.

from the Seattle times:
bq. Wise on Overton: “I didn’t have this much trouble with him at all (last game), so maybe he feeds off the crowd at his home court. He’s a great defender though. He’s the first person that our coach talked about on defense. He and Dentmon both have quick hands. He said, ‘Watch it when you have the ball.’ He was our main focus in the scouting report.”

Truth is that Venoy has been a major factor all season and was huge tonight – he almost single handedly stopped the big run that UA went on in the first half, he absorbed at least three charges and even dropped a few points including a big three tonight. The man is legitimately one of the top four all-around contributors to a Pac 10 championship team.

"Greed is Good."
So is Rudy.

And almost as important

He makes opposing fans go all apoplectic.

by discovolante on Feb 28, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

I said earlier

That this was probably the best game he’s played in his career, even though the numbers don’t support it. He has had a few big games over the past month or so, but let’s not forget how poorly he played just two days ago. When he’s on his game he’s a great role player, but he can send things south for the team quickly with his turnovers.

And he’s not one of the top four players on the team. He’s fifth behind Dentmon, Brockman, Thomas and Pondexter.

by thecassino on Feb 28, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed...

…his defensive pressure was instrumental in the huge win over ASU. How does the crow taste cassino?

AWESOME!

What a gritty performance….to overcome poor free throw shooting and some very questionable calls (or non-calls) and to come back from 10 points down in the 2nd half was fantastic. The heart of a champion.
I agree with you crazidawg, resect is still missing. Even the FSN crew spent more time on the Wildcats than the Huskies. Instead of congrats to the Huskies for winning the title they said you had to feel sorry for the AZ team because they lost this game. I was amazed. Every timeout they kept showing the AZ huddle not the Washington huddle. They are still fixated on the AZ team under Lute I guess. Hopefully we can go out and get the respect we deserve in the weeks ahead!
Congrats to the Dawgs on a great season so far…now to finish what they started!

Getting respect

We have to get to Detroit to get the respect that we crave. Same for any team from this state. Not enough people and the weather isn’t sunny, like it is down in SoCal or Arizona.

Winners get respect

All that matters is winning the league and going deep in the tourney.

The more you win the more respect you get.
