Hatchie a Husky

Washington picked up another four star recruit last night when Micah Hatchie confirmed his intention to be a Husky during an in home visit. Hatchie is the sixth HS offensive lineman in this class. Hatchie is probably the top rated lineman that UW was recruiting this season even though he is now the third four star commit on the line in this class.

Will have more on this later after I get back from the beach.

Washington now has the eight ranked recruiting class in the country according to Scout and the top class in the Pac 10.

Micah Hatchie Says, "I Want To Be a Dawg" Commits To Washington

Micah Hatchie, 6’5" 285lb, OT from Waialua High School in Waialua, HI., has agreed to to play with the University of Washingto Huskies. Hatchie is a 4 star recruit and has a position rank of 25th in the nation.

Head Coach Steve Sarkisian has started the second season off with a big bang. Snaring his second 4 star recruit in as many days. Today’s commit by Micah Hatchie moves the Huskies into 8th in the nation in Team rankings, published by Scout.com.

When Hatchie took his official to Washington on November 28, 2009, he fell in love with everything saw at Montlake as reported by Dawgman.com. The Huskies were playing cross state rival WSU Cougars during his visit.

In a statement to Dawgman.com, Hatchie said, ""The game was intense," he said of the Huskies’ 30-0 win over the Cougars. “Just how it was played and the crowd. It was packed last night. I’ve never seen a crowd like that before.”

Hatchie also commented on how the coaches keep track of there players. Checking up on them daily and making sure they are doing well in classes.

Hatchie was also being recruited by California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and UTAH.

With the commitment of Hatchie and the commitment of 6’5", 285 lb Erik Kohler of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, CA, Steve Sarkisian is setting the table for the re-emergence of the University of Washington football program.

It would seem that Sarkisian has awakened this sleeping giant of Division 1 college football.

Recruiting Banquet

It was “off the hook” last year but I think this one is going to be sold out quickly and will be even better! Get your tickets fast! I would definitely recommend it for all “Hard Core Huskies”!

Gotta like all the OL recruits

I have high hopes for the team in the coming few years, and the turnaround from just a year ago as the Willingham era came to its inglorious and pathetic end is unbelievable.

Gotta

love the way Sark and his coaches are recruiting their butts off. The energy they used to get the team playing is also working on the recruiting trail.

Not enough O linemen

That was the chant last year, but all the good ones were taken by the time Sark was hired. Problem solved, now we can complain about too many senior lineman 4-5 years from now.

Last week the question was “will a 4-7 season be a success?” Not applicable. The majority said yes, so the great Cal victory was gravy.

So give Sark a mulligan on the 4th down call and realize that this year “wait til next year” is really something to look forward to.

Hatchie, Kolher, Riva am I missing anyone?

Its a dam good start back to where this program belongs. That’s got the making of a very physical offensive line- the kind of line that use to just move folks.

Welcome to HuskyNation Micah! WOOF!!!

Right now we have Kohler, Porter, Tanigawa, Riva & Hatchie, plus maybe Criste. That’s a really nice looking group right there…

I haven’t broused the commit list from dawgman lately. It’s been growing exponentially. Hatchie seems to be fundamentally sound and I’ve got high hopes for Kohler and Porter.

Huge get..

Hatchie is the best player in Hawaii this year. According to those on the islands it’s not even real close. I believe Fetters at Dawgman has said that Hatchie is very under rated and has the upside to be as good or better then anyone on the west coast.

by Snostrebla on Dec 9, 2009 7:55 AM PST up reply actions

Check out the photo's of Hatchie

What you see is a chiseled TE looking type of kid which is rare in a 17-18 year old OL recruit. This guy is very lean for a guy that comes in at 6’5 285. He is quite the specimen who is ready to play earlier if needed.

by John Berkowitz on Dec 9, 2009 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

That menas he's athletic and not just O line big

I think one of our down falls pertaining to our recent histoy of our O line is that they haven’t been very athletic. O linemen have to explode out of their stance in order to apply the blocking leverage before the opposing defenders can abuse them. Being athletic on the O line is HUGE. You have to pull, scrape, hook, combo to 2nd level to be successful. One way to get “break out” runs is by getting the 2nd level blocked. I think not achieving this would explain one reason why Chris Polk has had troubles breaking off long runs.

Polk is by far the biggest winner w/ our upgrade in talent on the O line coming in.

Not sure about the order but here are a few:

1) Pullard
2) Shirley
3) Heilmuli
4) Dargan
5) Jamora
6) Taula

by Snostrebla on Dec 9, 2009 9:08 AM PST reply actions

Major Wish List

The coaches have cooled on Tonga and possibly JC players in general at this point. Not saying the won’t sign any but they seem to be fully concentrating on HS kids at the moment.

Heilmuli and Jamora say they will visit but most expect them to stay home in Utah when it is all said and done. Jamora is probably a better bet than Heimuli.

Pullard and Shirley would be major coups since UCLA have been their fave’s for quite sometime. UW however is putting the full court press on both. You add either one of these guys and all I can say is wow! We have a decent shot by the way. The Cal win really helps too.

by John Berkowitz on Dec 9, 2009 10:21 AM PST up reply actions

I want Pullard!

And what Crazi wants … Crazi gets!

This guy just has that Butkus Award finalist written all over him. He has the look of a guy that can just come up and whip your butt if you come up the middle and I’m willing to bet that he can ear hole just about anybody off tackle.

Get this guy! Pullard and some D backs would definitely bring the class to a close and finish off in the top 10.

Pullard is my guy! WOOF!!!

No

All these guys need to red-shirt and star in the weight room. We are set at tackle with Scheafer, Habben and I’ve heard Kelemente may move to tackle next year also. If everything goes how it should these guys and Nick Montana don’t see the field for a couple years.

by Snostrebla on Dec 9, 2009 11:19 AM PST up reply actions

Good call

I wouldn’t mind 1 or 2 guys playing as true freshmen, especially out of such a large class. But for the long term success of the program, the majority of these guys need to redshirt and spend a year in the weight room.

Whoo ... Hooo! Lear I agree again

We need to get back to redshirting kids- that is where you create depth. Play them early and you are basically forcing them out the door faster and not getting them when they’ve reach their max potential in player development.

O line is one of the hardest units to get acclimated to. You really have to under go a lengthy process in order to fine tune your game. I’d like to see all our O line redshirting. Maybe the only exception would be Hatchie “if” he is as athletic as billed.

Play kids as true freshmen only if they are ready and their is a need. Desmond Trufant was ready and earned honorable mention. I doubt Desmond was physically ready to play, but mentally he was one of our mentally toughest kids on defense. That tells you how truly important being mentally tough is at this level. Play them only if their is a need and the player is ready. If no need and if not ready- redshirt.

not again.

by Gekko Mojo on Dec 9, 2009 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

Redshirting is great if you can get away with it. One problem though is many kids are really sold on the idea of playing right away. I think one of the reasons Sark has done so well with recruiting this year is selling the idea that if a kid can prove he’s good enough, that he’ll play right away – they did it at USC, and he did it this year at the UW.

The other thing to factor is balancing out the classes – as things currently stand, our classes are very unbalanced. Some of that may correct itself via attrition and in recruiting JC kids down the line, but there may be a need to play some guys this year simply to put more kids in the same class as the freshmen that redshirted last year.

by kirkd on Dec 9, 2009 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

What's the rush?

Yeah I am aware of the trend to play young, but why are many kids in so big a hurry? Why would you want to rush into playing against players that are physically your superior?

I would like to see us buck this trend a tad. Get some of the kids in the weight room, acclimated to the rigorous course work in the classroom, and soak in everything that the coaches can provide. Why not hold that year of eligibility so that when you do begin your seasons of eligibiltiy, you are playing against your physical equals instead of your physical superiors.

Now some kids are ready from the get-go and I’m cool with that. Desmond was ready and boy did he deliver! Yet I’m not so sure many others on the roster were and for the most part they burned that year of eligibility and will never get it back.

If you’re ready and their is a need- play. But you have to think this thing out logically. I realize the need to take the fastest route to the pros, but a year bustin’ your rear in the weight room will get you more acclimated to major college football- thus having the ability to showcase your talents. It’s about getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Putting in the time is crucial in regards to player development.

rigorous course work

Freshman year at a University is a culture shock. Especially for those who could coast and get good grades in High School. Athletes who were lauded and passed along have it especially hard.
Flunk out rate is high for Freshman athlete or not. I remember the sign in the local pub “FLUNK NOW AVOID THE JUNE RUSH”.
The big classes with the two day labs were an automatic “B” if you read the book and showed up. Too many are there for the social life and good times.

by Purpledawg on Dec 11, 2009 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

Hey, believe me – I’m in favor of redshirting where possible. I’d much rather have a year of a kid at age 22 than a year at age 18.

I think a big part of all the kids playing this year was simply that Sark & Holt felt they were the best options. It’s too bad Tokolahi’s redshirt got burned, but at the time I think they honestly felt like he was good enough to make the team better.

It’s clear these guys didn’t want to go the WSU route and take a short-term hit for long-term gain and mass redshirt everyone. They wanted to win right away, and if that meant burning redshirts, so be it.

The need to play kids right away should decrease the longer Sark is here, because our depth should improve and the number of kids that are good enough to be in the 2-deeps should decrease.

But don’t discount the recruiting advantages of being able to show a kid proof that you are willing to play freshmen if they’re ready. More and more kids are making their decision on where to go on the basis of where they can play the soonest.

My guess on their rationale is this – if they don’t redshirt, that makes the NFL (and getting paid) one year closer. Most of them think they’re good enough to play right away, and most of them think they’ll end up in the NFL, so to them, redshirting just means one more year that they aren’t getting paid for playing football.

by kirkd on Dec 11, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt it

In a erfect world they all redshirt and with losing only one guy that mattered off of last years line I really doubt they need to resort to that unless some injuries pop up.

Who would be most read to play….looks like Porter and Hatchie to me if they went that route.

by John Berkowitz on Dec 9, 2009 11:55 AM PST up reply actions

Playing right away

Fancher should be healthy for Spring practice and the coaches thought highly enough of him before he was injured that they had him pencilled in for serious playing time if not a starting job.

As someone else said Kelemete could also move outside but I think they pair him with Tolar and Ikehara inside.

Ikehara played very well once he got his weight back on. He is the nastiest lineman on the roster when healthy.

by John Berkowitz on Dec 9, 2009 1:17 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I expect to see

Tolar moved after the way the O line played against Cal. Okehara looked solid

by T9ODawg on Dec 9, 2009 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

Yep. I’ve figured for a while now the line next year would be:

LT: Schaefer
LG: Tolar
C: Ikehara
RG: Kelemete
RT: Habben

Primary backups being Christine, Wood & hopefully Fancher. Now or never time for Armelin, Shugert & Thomas. Wouldn’t surprise me to see guys like Kohler, Porter & Hatchie work their way into the 2nd team, though I’m sure the coaches will strongly prefer not to play any of them if they can avoid it.

by kirkd on Dec 9, 2009 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

Not sure about Tolar switching just yet

The center and QB have got to have a solid working relationship. When Tolar went out, the line executed as well if not better then it had all season. But consider this … When Tolar was snapping the ball does anybody ever remember seeing a botched snap? That is huge!

I’m sure Sark and Coz will make the right decision personnel wise up front. The bottom line is we have to have coehesion, knowlege of assignments, and fellas that have what it takes to execute the assignment with precision. Second year in Camp Sark, I think we’re going to be a pretty solid unit up there. To end the season the way the O line performed gives us a glimpse of what to expect in the future. I don’t know about all you, but coming from blocking schemes of the spread and transforming our thinking patterns and techique for the pro was a huge hurdle to climb. I think we finally figured it out down the stretch. Maybe we figure it out earlier if Christine doesn’t get injured, but that also provided us with what to expect in the player development program under Sark. Our No.2 got a crash course learning how to play within the system. Things are looking up…

Armelin, Shugert, and Thomas

I would be very surprised to ever see them see any action or maybe even last till next fall. Thomas is very iffy because of a congenital leg injury…he may get the retirement treatment.

Yeah, I’m doubtful on all three, but you never know – maybe someone comes out of nowhere like Nick Wood did. Those three are all attrition candidates though…

Sione Potoae

My feeling about him being a soft verbal with Scout, then a solid commit, then back to soft verbal is that, regardless of how good he is, if he wants to go to USC, so be it. He is a young man, a kid to those of us in our 60s, and as much as I would love to see him a Husky, if, like Jake Heaps, if his heart is elsewhere then that is where he belongs. According to Fetters, he committed because his father was here, and now his father has been deployed overseas. The question that only he can answer is: Does he really want to be a Dawg. If not, so be it. If the answer is yes, then right on Sione, and

My feeling about him being a soft verbal with Scout, then a solid commit, then back to soft verbal is that, regardless of how good he is, if he wants to go to USC, so be it.

The change in his status in the Scout.com database has nothing to do with him and everything to do with Scout trying to figure out how they classify guys. He was originally listed as a “verbal”, then switched to a “soft verbal” when he announced several months ago that he was likely going to visit other schools. Then Scout switched him back to “verbal” on the reasoning that until he actually had another visit scheduled, he shouldn’t be considered a “soft verbal”. Now that he’s actually scheduled a visit to USC, they have switched him back to “soft verbal”.

In reality, nothing has really changed on his end since he first announced he was likely to take some other visits. He’s still highly likely to sign with the UW – his family wants him here, and it’s still his first choice.
