Cal at Washington Game Thread

California Golden Bears at Washington Huskies, Dec 5, 2009 3:30 PM PST

The final game of the season is upon us with the Golden Bears invading Husky Stadium today for an afternoon contest. The weather will be clearand a bit chilly in Seattle with high temperatues only forecasted for the mid 40's. Weather canbe a factor in this one since California teams historically don't enjoy late season visits to Seattle.

Position Matchups

Quarterback...Washington...Jake Locker has the edge over Riley now that he is healthy and back to his dual threat self. Riley's performance has been a problemfor Cal this season so if the game is completely on his shoulders it bodes well for Washington.

Running Back...California...Jahvid Best won't be playing today but Shane Vereen is just as good. Chris Polk will end 2009 with another 100 yard gain but Cal has more big play ability from this spot because of a superior offensive line. For Washington to have a chance in this one they have to shut down the Cal rushing game.

Wide Receivers...Washington...The Huskies have a slight edge with Kearse and Aguilar if Jake is accurate today. James Johnson who has faded into the background over the second half of the season is due for a big game. TE Kavario Middleton is another guy who is due. Cal's secondary can be beat  so this is an area Washington can exploit today.

Offensive Line...California...The Bears have the edge here in experience and depth. Washington at best has been adequate this season. The Bears on the other hand have had games where they have dominated the opposition.

Defensive Line...California...Trevor Guyton is a reserve biding his time at Cal for Washington he would be a starter.  That right there tells you all you need to know about Cal depth at the position. They aren't Oregon State but they have enough of a rotation to tire Washington out.

Linebacker...Washington...This is Donald Butler's last game in purple and gold and I expect him to go out in style. EJ Savannah remains sidelined. Mason foster has had an all star season. Cort Dennison has done everything the coaches have  asked of him this season.

Secondary...Even...The Huskies are getting better and Jason Wells will be healthy enough to start his last game as a Husky which is a big plus now that he has the rust off. The two young corners improve every game. The late season bye's have helped Nate Williams return to form. Nate Fellner has proved himself to be a promising player when needed. Cal's Sydquan Thompson is a big time talent when he decides to show up. the Bears have more talent on paper but I like the way the Huskies have been playing lately.

Special Teams...California...Cal has more speed, depth, and big play ability than Washington has. The Huskies are not a threat to score via the return game. Cal has enoug speed to take it back to the house every time we kick to them so coverage is a big key today.

Although unlikely...

this would be a great win for the Dawgs and provide good momentum going into the off season. Hopefully Sark and Co. will take the gloves off and come up with some things that we haven’t seen yet.

Only in Seattle can you get a sunburn and frost bite on the same day!

Time to bundle up and head off to the game! A win would be a huge way to send the program into the off season, GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last week

was pretty refreshing, regardless of whether or not it was a well played game. I just want them to hit like they started to last week. That’s Husky football…big hits. You got to love it!!! GO DAWGS!

I live in Graham (right outside of Seattle)

It is 42 Degrees and the sun is beating down. Beautiful day, Go Huskys!

Nice to see Sark open the playbook

was that the first trick play of the year?

Kearse.........

is already showing the shortcomings of Cal’s pass D – keep finding them, Jake! Go Dogs!

by Go Viks! on Dec 5, 2009 4:06 PM PST reply actions

Jake could have easily run for that

noce pick up the fourth down…looks like Jake has all the time he needs….offensive line doing a good job so far. Cal is concentrating on the run which is opening up the pass.

I don't know

It was too early, and we have the lead. Take the points.

On the 4th and 5

I think they were on the 34 yard line, too long for a field goal but still in Cal territory. There’s a pretty good chance punting nets you awfully little. The 4th and 1 from the 20 or so is good in theory.

At that point though I don’t have a lot of confidence in this particular offense to win a power situation.

by Will Kier on Dec 5, 2009 4:28 PM PST up reply actions

The 4th and 5 I agreed with

But the second one I thought they should have kicked.

if not STUPID. Why not 3, 4 that matter?

Great start

Looks like Cal might have checked out before kickoff.

by Go Viks! on Dec 5, 2009 4:26 PM PST reply actions

finally

I’m just glad Tebow is having a poor game so either McCoy/Gerhart can win the Hesiman this year. I hate UF specifically because of Tim Tebow and the hype that he gets. McCoy, Locker, Caleros, and even (ugh) Masoli could lead that team to a NC.

I heard somebody at my office the other day say “Locker should stay, Tebow and McCoy are going in the top 10”.

God I love Chris Polk

Even during Louis Rankin’s big game against (UCLA?) a few years ago I felt…yeah, whatever, a good game. But MAN I like Polk.

We have owned the first half so far…tack another 7 on the board and it will be tough for Cal.

We’re having fun so far…aside from the fact Mack Strong is still talking in circles…We’re definitely playing well…

great first half

I guess we answered the question on which team showed up this week. Funny how a win can pump you back up. we also get the ball to start the second half!

by John Berkowitz on Dec 5, 2009 5:03 PM PST reply actions

OMG!!

We keep this up, and those losses to ASU, NDU and/or UCLA are true Heart & Bowl breakers. SOOO close, we should be tossing hand grenades! So much more fun than the past few years!!!!

by Go Viks! on Dec 5, 2009 5:05 PM PST reply actions

The ASU loss was infuriating.

The ND loss was frustrating too but the zebras blew it.

Probably the most bizarre play this season.

No surprise to me..

Mason Foster made a great decision and awesome play! He broke up a rythm AZU was taking for granted all night long. Mason trumped that over-confindence perfectly!! Things like that are not so much “unlikely”, as they are what life should be like much more often.

Aloha JB!

So happy for you in Maui! Hawai’i is just as much my “home” state as it is Prez Obama’s. My driver’s license is from there. Moved from WA to HI in ‘05, than back “here” in ’08. For now I am very happy to be watching our Huskies kickin’ some butt once again, while enjoying brie, whole-grain crackers, and a bottle of Gordon Bro’s -02 "Traditional’, here in the historical “Lowell Town” of S. Everett.

Okay, okay! You win. I’d rather be drinking even Bud, and eating chocolate covered bugs, on Maui.

And now the Husky D just gave 2 deep pass plays. Time for a turnoever.

They beat the Ducks, which is pretty huge this year. I think they deserve it even more than the fine TCU and Cincy teams.
