BYU spanks Beavers 42-20

BYU thrashed Oregon State last night 44-20 in a game that really wasn't as close as the score indicated. It was pretty obvious from the onset that the Beavers collective minds were still on the loss to Oregon and not the upcoming game with BYU. Ted Miller called it a Civil War hangover and I have to agree.

The Beaver's big three comprised of Canfield and the Rodger's brothers were never much of a factor in last nights game. All three were plauged by mistakes during the evening as the Beavers never got their offensive engine started. The weather was also a big factor in this game. A high wind and cool weather seemed to to take any fight out of OSU that they had left coming into the game which is unusual for a Northwest team.

Perhaps the biggest key was simply coaching. BYU had a better game plan and their veteran lineup showed up for the game on fire and ready to go out in style. Mike Riley on the other hand never seemed to be able to fire up his players or get them to play in sync which is a rare occurence in his program.

BYU is graduating a ton of starters this season including QB Max Hall. The team you saw last night will have little resemblance to the edition the Cougars put on the field next season in Provo when the Huskies are scheduled to visit.

Oregon state will return 19 starters next season and if they can find a suitable replacement for Canfield they will surely be ranked among the Pac 10 favorites next year which will include Oregon and USC.

BYU

had a game plan for the Rodgers brothers and they executed it well although I think the wind had an effect as well.

Merry Christmas John

Thanks for another year of your wonderful blog. And a happy new year to my fellow bloggers. The country may be in the tank, but Husky football is certainly looking up.

We all look forward to next year’s team and John’s blog, and hopefully a big wind when we play the Beavers.

Your Welcome

I read an interesting stat about Jacquizz today.

That backward lateral on that swing pass that BYU returned for a TD was Rogers’ first fumble, period, as a collegiate.

Two seasons, over 600 carries, and the only time he’s put the ball on the turf was on what he clearly thought was an incomplete pass.

That’s impressive.

by Sundodger on Dec 23, 2009 5:23 PM PST reply actions

Was it his fault?

The fumble goes to the receiver on a backward lateral pass like that. But you have to give the credit to the QB, who threw it behind Quiz and at his feet.

Called a fumble?

No, it wasn’t Quiz’s fault, but I guess a stat rule is a stat rule. Had it been a hand off, it would have been a QB fumble. Also, I think Quiz suspected the ball was still live, but it was at an awkward position for him to get to. At half time Lou Holtz said he never had a play like that because an “incomplete pass” is really a fumble.

I wonder if the play calls for a forward pass or a lateral? If the QB steps back a little more and leads the HB, its definitely a forward pass. As BYU piled it on, the fumble became less significant.

Spring Game at Night?

Something is brewing for the Spring Game? It’s being listed as “Friday Night Lights”. That should be different. For me, coming over from the East Side, it’ll make it a bit more difficult but it sounds like a fun concept. GO DAWGS!!

Letter of Intent Day?

I thought signing day was always on Feb. 4th? It’s always been on that day as I recall, because my son’s birthday is Feb. 4th.

Why is Friday Night Lights so big this Spring?

Is that the night they bring back the purple helmet for away games? I’m open to minor changes if it helps to create even more of a frenzied atmoshere.

I like the idea of keeping our uniform tradition in tact for home games, but maneuver outside the box a bit for away games. How would this look for away games?

- purple hemet w/ “W” decal and sport stripe on the crown.
- our white away jerseys
- our gold pants w/ the retro sport striping
(optional) purple pants w/ the retro sport striping
(optional) white pants w/ the retro sport striping.

Note: Never change our uniform tradition for home games

Wind Momentum and Very Physical Coverage

BYU had the right side of the field when it mattered. In the first quarter, the wind was a non factor because each team was still in the “feeling out” phase. Oregon State had the wind advantage in the 1st quarter and should’ve capitalized on it. When the 2nd quarter rolled around, BYU got the wind advantage and took complete control of the game from that moment on. Oregon State lost this game in the 1st quarter.

Was it just me or was there a lot of interference no calls on BYU last night? Many times I thought for sure a flag was going to come down on the BYU secondary and not one flag was thrown until BYU had boat raced out to a 30-7 lead. It had the look as if the officials were just wanting this game to end as quickly as possible due to the 45 mph winds. I clearly thought their could’ve been 6 or 7 pass interferance calls on the BYU secondary- many times getting there a little too early. Could you see the frustration on the OSU receiver’s faces?

Didn’t like Oregon State’s play calling. When you are down big, you have to shoot for positive yards, how many lateral designed plays did OSU call that went for very few or nothing? Riley needs to throw that game film out the window and move on to next season.

because blogs are the place to spread vicious rumors

inside vegas sources have hinted that there was excessive partying by OSU players the night before and the day of the football game. Partying apparently extended to just hours before kickoff. Just an inkling, but I’m betting those BYU boys weren’t drinking and toking before the game.

My confidence in the source of the rumors is medium to medium-high. Have fun debating that for a bit.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

SUN BOWL

My last bowl game forever. Loss to Minnesota in the Sun Bowl. Rumor had it the Huskies spent the night before in Jaurez till early morning. I don’t what else could explain such a pathetic showing. It was embarrassing. My Husky gear stayed in the hotel room securely locked in a suitcase.

SUN BOWL

I remember Minnesota could be IOWA. Whichever it was it was embarrassing.

Also, SUN BOWL v TEXAS was one of the most exciting bowls ever. Texas players down played PAC-10 as pansies. I remember final score as 14-7 Huskies. Final four downs Texas was forced to pass. The QB was sacked four times by four different Huskies. This was smash mouthed nose to nose football. GO DAWGS.

This is the kinf of BOWL GAME you will see under SARK/HOLT!!!!

UTAH WINS BIG

The California poopers stunk up the joint. Or is the Mountain Conference just better than the PAC-10? Very likely now the PAC-10 will lose all six bowl games.

Such a shame the Huskies came so close, ND, AZ ST. At least we would of provided an exciting game.

What an embarrassment...

…the Pac-10 is not impressing anyone. I kind of felt like when we blew the bears out that it was kind of like a worst case scenario for them. But really as far as a lot of turnovers, I don’t recall many. Clearly we had turned the corner and gotten better while Cal, well it’s hard to explain their situation?

OSU surprised...Cal not so much

I picked Utah to beat Cal….now OSU surprised me. The story above that Gecko dug up that says the Beavs partied it up till almost gametime makes a lot of sense to me.

by John Berkowitz on Dec 24, 2009 7:31 AM PST up reply actions

I saw this coming

It seems as if when the Pac 10 looks good during the season, we cave in during the bowl season. On the flip side if we look lethargic during the season, we bounce back and win most of our bowl games. That’s been the trend lately.

Was it a “Civil War hangover”? I’m not so sure. But when Oregon State flops vs. BYU and Cal gets pummeled by Utah, something is not right. I still think the Pac 10 is far more superior then the Mountain West top to bottom, but I’d also wager that BYU and Utah can play with every school in our league and be successful. Are these two schools gunning for membership? They’ve proven it on the field that they certainly belong, and if expansion is on the horizon in the Pac 10, then I’d welcome both schools in, for we’d own college football west of the Rockies.

Surely we could get more tvs if we raid Texas or Colorado, yet I like the fact that we’d still be a close nit group with only the state of Nevada in the midst. Yet even Nevadans would become much intrigued with a Pac 12 league.

Strengths for Utah as a Pac 10 member:
- proven bigtime football program.
- larger seating cap. football stadium then Autzen, Reser, or Martin. And I see expansion if league membership is approved.
- transportation to and from Utah adequate, SLC has a nice airport.
- huge fanbase in the SLC region.
- men’s basketball team played in 96 NCAA championship game vs. Kentucky, basketball could still be Pac 10 competitive.

Strengths for BYU as a Pac 10 member:
- history and a winnning tradition in football that dates back to coach LaVell Edwards.
- Hiesman trophy winner.
- 1984 National Championship team.
- larger seating cap. football stadium then Autzen, Reser, or Martin. And I see expansion if league membership is approved.
- transportation to and from BYU adequate, Provo is only a 30 min. drive south of SLC, which is better then getting into Eugene, Corvallis, and Pullman.
- huge fanbase in the SLC region, along w/ a nation wide following of the LDS.

Now I realize that Utah is a major favorite to be added if the league plans to expand. But I also like BYU coming along too. It provides us with a 2 member addition w/ in-state rivalry ties, transporation would be efficient for the league to travel. And if you haven’t noticed, we are a league built within or close in relation to major metros (Los Angelas, San Francisco/Oakland, Portland, Pheonix, and Seattle). Adding Salt Lake City would be a great addition.

Creating revenue for the league is beneficial, but are we going to steel Colorado from the lucrative Big 12? And would a Texas or A&M leave all their rich traditon behind? Colorado isn’t leaving and forget about Texas- even TCU is not a good fit due to it’s location in the Lone Star State. It has to be Utah and BYU. Maybe the mormons are a bit radical, but we can’t allow religious stereotypes to get in the way of progress. The Pac 12 would “own” college football west of the Rockies and I firmly believe both Utah and BYU made huge statement the last couple nights. My vote is in…

MORMONS

are required to spend two years religous proselytizing. Add a red shirt and you have 25 year old men playing 18-19 year olds. We don’t need them.

by Purpledawg on Dec 24, 2009 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

It's not required

But the desire to spend time on a mission is something every mormon strives for while growing up. Most do, some don’t and there you go…

I realize the age discrepancy and it’s a tough call for 18, 19, and 20 year olds to face 24 and 25 year olds. How much does the human body naturally develope over that period in a young man’s life? Many kids who come right out of high school are still bony and bleek. But a kid who graduates H.S., redshirts, attends a 2 year mormon mission, and comes back as a 22 year old redshirt freshman will naturally develope more muscle over that period of time. Spend a year or two in the weight room and BOOM! He’s already a maturally developed athlete as a redshirt sophomore, who is more or less the same age of men entering the NFL.

Yet the Mountain West Conference has worked out quite well and you don’t see too many MWC folks screaming about the age difference and look out! BYU is not winning the MWC- it’s been going to Utah and TCU. I think we could handle the age thing as well, if not better then the MWC.
