Minor recruiting violation self reported for UW Football team.
King 5 news reported tonight that the UW Athletic Department self reported a minor secondary violation by some current football players durng a recruiting visit over one year ago. The violation was loaning a recruit money so he could pay for his share of a $300 plus dollar bar tab. The offending players were disaplined and have perfomed community service and the recruits repaid the money borrowed. The only issue I could find that was not explored is the report said it was underage recruits (like unless they were JC guys they wouldn't be old enough to be in a bar let alone run up a $300 bar tab). The violation occured during Sark's first weekend as HC last December and involved no one from the coaching staff or administration.

King 5
Why does everything negative seem to come from King 5? I mean they were the same ones who put a hugely negative slant on the UWs attempt to get help with the Husky Stadium project. What gives, is there reporting crew inundated with wsu grads?!

That's because, despite popular UW opinion, we actually do rule the world
We control the information. Suck it!
I’m kidding about that last part, of course. But as a proud Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, I will inform you that the first part is, indeed true.

Timing
What really pisses me off, is the timing of the whole thing. Nobody else is reporting this, hence the story isn’t “breaking news”, it’s old news that some stupid WSU grad has sat on to try and counter punch the good news of Jake returning for his senior season. It’s no coincedence that the news “broke” on the same day. The media is the biggest joke in the great USA, especially when it’s cougs who are trying to control the information.
Just more motivation to run up the score on the Cougs next year. What better way to follow up the 30-0 shut out, than with a 50-0 shut out! Way to “coug it” King5, your just pissing off a football program that is going to own you for decades to come.

The timing says it all! Jake Locker coming back is a mega blockbuster story and King5 reports this crap on the same day! What a joke! Seattle media, the biggest bunch of boneheads in the world of media! Reminds me of the Seattle Times coming out with the garbage story when Willingham’s head was on the chopping block. Unreal! GO DAWGS!!

This happened a year ago!!!!
It was reported to the NCAA as a secondary violation and released in a public disclosure attachment in Janaury 2009. Don James was right about the Seattle News Media not supporting Husky ATHLETICS. This happened during his first weekend as head coach. Scum reporting by Chris Egan at King TV.

More to the story...
…apparently there is an assumption made that alcohol was purchased and that’s not necessarily the case. It was just the fact that a loan was given to recruits at this “nightclub”.

The real story . . .
Here’s more proof that King5 was on a witch hunt trying to purposely damage the UW football program on the same day that Locker announced he’d return. Thanks to Bob Condotta for researching the WHOLE story and getting to the truth.
To Scott Woodward: I highly recommend that you do not allow any King5 employees to attend, any and all events at the UW, until King5 publicly apologizes for this false attack on the UW football program!

You might want to notice
That UW did not explicitly deny alcohol was involved in Condotta’s. I’m not saying it was. I’m just saying they had an opportunity to categorically deny it, and did not do so.

Your take on this
How about a Cougar’s take on this, doesn’t it seem rather odd that this is brought up on the exact same day that Locker announced he’d be returning, 11 months after the incident?
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
"BOW DOWN TO WASHINGTON"
I don't know if it's all that odd
This idea that they somehow held onto it just doesn’t pass the sniff test. Journalism — especially television journalism — is so hyper competitive that there’s no way they hang onto any story for any reason if it’s ready to roll. About as far as any media outlet will go is to hang onto it until a day when the viewership/readership is high (such as holding an investigative piece until the Sunday paper).
If KING 5 believed that players were providing alcohol to minors — which they did, accurate or not — then there’s simply no way they held onto it just waiting for Jake Locker to announce he’s staying. To believe that just is kind of ridiculous.
By the way, this is coming from someone who worked in the sports department of a newspaper
So I do have first-hand knowledge of the sorts of conversations that surround whether to go with a story.
I don't think they held if for Locker's announcement
But I do think they held it for an opportune time, and Jake’s announcement was an opportune time. I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that it was disclosed in public documents 11 months ago, and it just now came to light. Wouldn’t surprise me if one specific individual knew of it, and didn’t bring it to the attention of others until it was an opportune time.

Clearing up some details on the violation story
Posted by Bob Condotta
I know this is nobody’s favorite piece of reading on this blog, but in the interest of trying to get all of the facts straight on the violation story that surfaced last night, here are a few other items of note on that:
The original KING-5 story says the violation was for purchasing alcohol for underage recruits. In fact, a UW spokesman says the self-report filed by the school on the incident does not mention that alcohol was purchased. Instead, the report says the incident occurred at a nightclubI have one of the standard issues of those contracts that basically all players at all schools sign in such instances - and it clearly states the $30 rule. UW admitted that some of the current players exceeded the $30 limit in paying for the bill run up by the recruits. So that was the violation. The spokesman said the prospects paid the money back to the current students and also made a donation to charity. The current players were punished internally and also made to perform some community service.

Anybody besides me get the feeling that the recruits and the Huskies players were at a titty club?
I know of no night club in Seattle where it would be worth $300 to entertain prospective football players.

As a kid growing up in Lakewood WA., my whole family watched King5. I just don’t understand how they can allow themselves to become so biased against the HOME TEAM! Get your facts straight before you report the story! But I suppose they wouldn’t have been in a position to report the story on the same day Jake Locker announces he’ll return! Unreal!

I normally defend the media from the slings and arrows of angered fans, but not this time. Totally unwarranted as a lead story and done with exceptionally questionable timing. Local TV news is a joke, and this just reinforces why I haven’t watched local TV news in over a decade.
"Local TV news is a joke, and this just reinforces why I haven’t watched local TV news in over a decade."
Agreed. This is hardly top of the newscast stuff, unless they have hard, verifiable evidence that underage recruits were, in fact provided alcohol. The fact that UW is not categorically denying it raises my eyebrows, but it sure seems like a bit of shoddy journalism if indeed the support for the report is as thin as it seems.

Let’s not kid ourselves – underage kids get alcohol all the time. It’s not ideal of course, but it’s also not a big deal so long as coaches weren’t involved in encouraging and paying for the activity. I have a hard time believing that recruiting trips all over the country frequently involve kids going to parties or hanging out in dorms where alcohol is present and provided.
I'm certain you are correct
Doesn’t make it right, and one function of the media is to be a watchdog of our institutions. I would hope that we all could agree that it should generally be considered bad form to provide alcohol to high school students who are official guests of any university and in the university’s care.
by Jeff Nusser on Dec 16, 2009 11:49 AM PST up reply actions
Yeah, that’s probably true.
Still, I have a hard time getting too worked up over it considering how frequently underage students were drinking in college when I was a student in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Maybe things are different now, but I have my doubts. Again, if it was something that happened when it was just players hosting the recruits, and not in the presence of and with the consent of the coaches, I consider this a minor issue.
I have no problem with a story like this getting a limited amount of column inches in the paper with the proper context explained (it happened last year, it was a minor violation, the players have been punished, etc.) My main objection is the sensationalism of the way the story was presented by KING 5, as though this were some kind of major story.
I only take exception with one thing you said
The host players are an extension of the athletic department when they’re hosting recruits, and therefore an extension of the university. Otherwise, there would be no regulation on their behavior. So I think it creates a different dynamic than just some undergrad drinking while underage.
If I’m a parent and I’ve sent my kid on an official recruiting trip and trusted the university with taking care of my kid for the weekend — which is what an official trip is, since the university picks up the expenses — I would expect that my child would not be provided alcohol. I’m sure not all parents care, but, as I said before, it would seem to be bad form since a lot of parents probably would care if only they knew what was going on.
But you’re right that the sensationalism reflected poorly on the media outlet involved.
by Jeff Nusser on Dec 16, 2009 12:38 PM PST up reply actions
I get what you’re saying, but I also look at it as “boys being boys”. Yes, technically the players in that situation are extensions of the University, but they’re also kids. What happens when they are unsupervised is going to be different than when parents and/or staff are around. Doesn’t make it “right”, but as I said, in my opinion it’s not a major deal.
The timing of it all
My biggest issue is the timing of this, how does this come to light 11 months later on the same exact day that Locker announces he will return for his senior year????
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
"BOW DOWN TO WASHINGTON"
You're hung up on the timing
The official report was dated 8-31-09. Yes the incident happened in January, but the self report to the NCAA wasn’t sent in until the end of August. Now, add in a bit of time for word to get out and to file a public disclosure act and it’s much less time. King 5 also probably had a source that told them alcohol was involved, otherwise this would be a non-story along the lines of a smoke machine.
I didn’t watch and don’t know if they ran Locker and this back to back or what, but honestly it isn’t even that big of a deal. In the sports side of this, on that day, it was a third story, at best. Locker, Lee, and then this as far as I’m concerned. It’s better it ran on a big sports day like that because it gets buried under everything else.

I didn't realize they ran it as the lead at 11

A few better stories?
Monfort in court, 787 getting ready for it’s first flight, Locker, Lee? I guess the whole thing seemed fishy and that’s why it has our attention. The story itself is really a non story.
"Legends are made on the shores of Lake Washington"
"BOW DOWN TO WASHINGTON"
I agree
All I’m saying is it really wasn’t bad either. It ran at 11, the least watched of the news casts, and was gone by the next day with the dreamliner story dominating the news.
If you read the report,...
…to me anyway, it appears that the total was 300 dollars. That was for all three of the attendees. So in reality, 100 dollars was paid for the prospective student athlete and that was the violation. There was no mention in the report of alcohol.
Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!
I think the point has been made that when given the opportunity to clearly refute the notion that alcohol was involved, the UW failed to do so. They simply noted that the violation report didn’t mention alcohol, which is a lawyer-esque way of avoiding the question.
True but...
why bring up the alcohol issue if the official report makes no mention of it?
Washington Husky Football-Undefeated 1991 National Champions 12-0!
My guess is whoever was doing the reporting on the issue for KING 5 has some info that alcohol was involved. Again, if alcohol was definitely not involved in the incident, I would think (hope?) that the UW would forcefully deny it – instead, they did the non-denial denial by saying the report didn’t mention alcohol. That’s very different from clearly stating that alcohol wasn’t involved.
Why is KINGTV not investigating all the arrest and alcohol charges at WSU...
Why is KINGTV not investigating all the arrest and alcohol charges at WSU since Janurary 21, 2009. Now that would make some interesting print. 30 arrests in 28 months.

Oh come on
Do you have to point at the other school in the state and say look at them?
They reported on the arrests already and Schram on Komo ripped the coach. Pullman isn’t exactly King 5’s focus. That’s part of the price you pay for being in the city, you’re in the limelight.
Yep, we do have to point at the other school in the state!
When Cougar fans openly fought against our stadium upgrade, they opened the door for a full fledge battle. So if we want to talk about underage drinking, we should really be talking to the experts – WSU students.

It'll Be Interesting...
…to see what happens this time around. Woodward is again going to go to the state legislature asking for help with Husky Stadium. If the cougs pull what they did last time, it’s going to hurt them down the road. There won’t be any more state funding for ANY future athletic facility projects. At least that’s what I’m projecting. Husky fans and UW supporters are not going to forget and they’ll be watching when the cougars want money for athletic facilities.
