Coach Cameron Dollar called onetime Husky signee Charles Garcia a top NBA prospect, and he was a monster in their first game, scoring inside and out. He even hit 2 of 3 from three. If the UW big men struggle this year, the JUCO qualification process may be the real culprit.

I’m not sure the qualification process was the real culprit here – I’ve heard a lot of talk that what really went down is that Garcia had become very attached to Coach Dollar, and when he took the SU job, Garcia really wanted to follow him, and the “non-qualifier” business was just a cover-up to allow him to do so.

That's a plausible theory

But Im not sure how much I believe it. Maybe it’s my own bias but I can’t imagine a player choosing Seattle U over Washington and the chance to be competitive on a national level. I really think Garcia just couldn’t get into UW, because he’s always had grade issues, and qualification
was a big hurdle that was always a question mark.

I don't really have a problem with it.

… as an alum, I can live with the tradeoff of maintaining some semblance of standards while trying to accommodate athletes. It would seem that all of a sudden creating a PE track would lack integrity.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
