For at least the time being, Lorenzo Romar has declared the Gonzaga series once again dead. With the history between the coaches and Mark Few's childish reaction to UW's proposed deal, don't expect these two teams to meet while the current coaches and AD's hold their positions.

Stupid does as Stupid says

Today in College Sports it is the almighty dollar. I guess Gonzaga wants teams to come into Spokane and play for pennies. WOW no wonder they play in a second tier conference.

If it is the almighty dollar at work and not competitive equality,

then they would have taken the games only at Seattle.

Seems to me, if you blame the “almighty dollar” you need to blame UW as much as Zaga. UW didn’t want to go to Spokane.

And what’s more, while UW football has been fantastic (up until Sark) with never playing cupcakes, the basketball team has done almost the complete opposite for years, to the point that ever time they were a bubble team and didn’t make it, when you compare the schedule with other bubble teams it is no wonder they didn’t get in.

No, I put this one on UW. They canceled the series, then wanted it revived only as a home game for them.

There was never any proposal to go to Spokane

UW suggested a deal, Gonzaga turned it down and no counter offer was made. And you can’t say Key Arena would be a home game for UW, because you and I both know that the fan base would be split right down the middle. Sure, Gonzaga would have to travel, but playing in Key Arena is nothing like playing at Hec Ed.

Hard to put that on UW.

Yep, not fair or entirely accurate to call the UW proposal a “home” game when the arena would be (at least) half full of Gonzaga fans.

by kirkd on Oct 30, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Because the players could drive their own vehicles to the arena, just like they would a home game.

You might say that the fan base would be 50/50 (I have a hard time believing it would be that, more like 70-30 Dub, but I don’t really know), but even so, it is a travel game for Gonzaga, even if a short one compared to league/national scheduling.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t want to see it— I would. But it is still a travel game.

But I wish they would do a home and home. Like they used to. Before UW CANCELED THE SERIES. While you can say Dub suggested a new one, they are the ones that canceled the first time around.

I have little doubt Gonzaga would sell their half of the KeyArena allotment and perhaps buy up some of the UW ones. I don’t recall hearing that Gonzaga has much trouble selling tickets for their annual game in KeyArena, and they have plenty of fans in Western Washington.

Yes, the players have to bus over to Seattle, looking at 10-11 hours round trip of travel. But it’s not exactly a “home” game for the UW in KeyArena – not when half the crowd is Gonzaga fans, and who knows where the Dawgpack sits, and the fact it’s not the arena that UW players are used to and comfortable in.

As for the rest – I’ve heard enough scuttlebutt about the antagonism between Romar & Few to understand why the UW canceled the series and why they aren’t going to real flexible in trying to revive it.

While it’d be nice to see the UW finally lay legitimate claim to being the best basketball program in the state by proving it on the court, I can live without it.

Personally,

I’m just glad the talks are indeed dead. I think you nailed it because no series will ever happen with these two coaches in place. It sucks for the state because I don’t see these coaches going anywhere any time soon. Mark Few kind of has a lifetime coaching pass in Spokane for what he has done for the university and Romar appears to be recruiting like crazy so UW should be back as a yearly contender in the Pac-10.

It’s a bummer for both fanbases. I was hoping that the series could be negotiated into a Key Arena/ Spokane Arena/ Hec Ed/ Kennel series. That’d be awesome for the state. I was also hoping maybe they could make it for five years and play one game at the Rose Garden. There are so many options these two sides could explore if they just put past grudges aside but that doesn’t appear to be happening.

Why would you take your fans out of State to Oregon...

Why would you take your fans out of State to Oregon… to play an in State rival. That is like having Oregon vs Oregon State playing in Key Arena. LOL

Great Northwest baskeball at a great Northwest location

At a truly neutral location. Portland is a rapidly growing city with a great basketball community and a top-notch arena. The city has a large population of Gonzaga and Washington alums that would surely sell out the arena. It makes quite a bit of sense to me but, of course, I’m part of that “ugly betty” fan base as you so eloquently put it. Famous for no reason is laughable. We’ve had one of the most dynamic college basketball superstars in this decade with Adam Morrison (i know he’s busted as a pro but we’re talking college here), been to a couple Sweet 16’s, are the example of what all non-bcs programs attempt to be.

Gonzaga must be afraid they couldn't sell their allotment of tickets...

Gonzaga must be afraid they couldn’t sell their allotment of tickets if the game was played on yearly basis at Key Arena in Seattle. " Gonzaga is the college basketball version of Ugly Betty – they’re famous for no reason, they don’t ook pretty and they do not have a rich daddy."

by bigdawgdaddy999 on Oct 30, 2009 12:05 PM PDT reply actions

Hmm...

Why should they have to sell their allotment of tickets as an eastside school to a westside game.

I’m a CWU grad but from the westside, so I’m able to ride the fence between the two programs, but Gonzaga is a great program. You want to talk about a program that is famous for no reason, talk about Oregon. You want to talk about a program that doesn’t look pretty, talk about Oklahoma. And daddy issues are for porn stars, not basketball teams.

Gonzaga afraid?

That is the silliest post I have ever read on this site.

Considering Oregon fans drop by frequently...

that’s a bold statement.

I’ve only been coming by for a little while, and have been out of the PNW for a time, so I forgot what Oregon fans are like.
