Huskies snatch victory from defeat!
Washington never seemed right tonight. From the onset they played sloppy but still came off the field with a 14-10 lead at the half. Arizona made some adjustments at the half and outscored the Huskies 17-7 in the third quarter and dominated time of possession in the second half working a short passing game consisting of mostly bubble screens which the Huskies could not figure out how to stop till the end of the game when all the chips were on the line.
Washington came into the game with a simple game plan. Stop the Arizona running game which they did and put the game in the hands of QB Nick Foles who was only making his second collegiate start. What they forgot to add was a pass rush for most of the night. Foles had all the time he needed last night. He was 39-53 for 384 yards and two very unfortunate interceptions which caused Arizona the game.
What was incredible huge was the first interception that Mason Foster picked off the foot of an Arizona receiver and returned for a 37 yard touchdown to give Washington the lead back with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter. Washington went for the two point conversion and Locker hit Jermaine Kearse in the corner of the end zone to stretch the lead to three points.
The Washington defense that had been picked apart by Nick Foles in the second half was able to prevent the Arizona offense from getting into FG range to tie the game and force it into overtime. Marcus Trufant intercepted a Foles pass on fourth down to end that drive. Jake Locker came into spike the ball and Washington won a game it had no business winning.
The Wildcats dominated time of possession 39:19 to only 20:15 for Washington. The Wildcats out gained the Huskies 461 to 256 yards! Jake Locker was only 12-23 with one interception for a total of 140 yards. He did run for a season high of 92 yards. Jake was responsible for over 90% of the Washington offense tonight. What was key for Jake and Washington was a 56 yard TD run in the first quarter plus three TD passes and the pass for that important two point conversion.
Washington scored 36 points tonight with only one trip into the red zone! Lets just say they made the most of their opportunities when it really mattered on offense. Chalk this victory up to a team that didn't quit all night. The defense was on the field all night but a big key in the victory was stopping Arizona four times and limiting them to field goals. UW couldn't stop the pass all night but in the red zone they stuffed the run. They held Arizona to only 77 yards on the ground. In the end that was a huge key to the win.
Next up for Washington is Arizona State in Tempe. The Sun Devils turned the ball over six times to WSU but still came out with a 27-14 win earlier today in the Palouse.

It was Desmond Trufant
But hey… the way he plays, you can’t really tell the difference.

I believe the 2-pt conversion was thrown to Kearse.
He made an amazing catch.

Couldn't agree more
as soon as the ball went into the air, I said oh crap, of all the plays why in the world would you call that one. I’m glad it worked, but very curious play call.

That was fun.
…. we just haven’t had many of these kinds of moments for a long time. Gekko hits:
1. I’m pumped for Foster. He has been making plays all year and now he’ll be all over sportscenter this week (and possible pac 10 D player of the week)
2. How good is Trufant. Really – did anyone see this coming?
3. I was surprised how long it took us to rush the passing lanes to take away those screens. We didn’t do it until the fourth quarter. I understand not blitzing, but we made Foles look like a Heisman candidate
4. BTW, Foles is going to be very good when he finds a long ball. He has outstanding composure.
5. The D-line is not going to figure out a pass rush this year. We are going to have to take a few more chances with blitzes once our Safety situation is shored up.
6. Walker whiffed on that INT – he committed the same sin that he committed in those two long TD passes vs. LSU… he started to drop / dive before he made the play. if he keeps his feet, that ball bounces off his helmet even if he doesn’t get his hands on it. Stay on your feet until your hands touch the ball or the ball carrier, young man!
7. I told you the right side of the line is our rock. No one is talking about what Tolar and Kelemete are giving us, but they have stepped up in what continues to be a shaky line (though this is one of the better/experienced D-lines we’ll face)
8. Jake is still looking for a little more touch on the long ball. He’s so close to having it.
9. I thought Q bounced back pretty well. That tackle he made in the open field by dragging down the receivers arm was outstanding.
10. Sark’s playcalling was a little ragged tonight. He didn’t set Jake up with many short passes early and I thought that affected rhythm and field position. We are looking like a team that needs the short passes to set up the run game.
11. We definitely got a call handed to us on that Jordan Polk fumble/incompletion. Clearly a makeup call from ND because Polk had the ball, took a step and switched hands.
Gawd, that was fun.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

I agree about the adjustment on the bubble screen. The only adjustment I recall was on the interception return. You can call it luck, but Foster caused Foles to adjust his pass. The pass was bad, and it was the reason for the “Immaculate Interception”, but it was caused by Holt finally making an adjustment on that play.

It wasn't Holt believe it or not
Foster told Butler he had a hunch and was going to do something crazy to break it up….oh man he did.

Too cute!
The AZ passing game worked all night, no pressure on the QB, loose coverage on the receivers and lots of yardage after the catch. But with only a few minutes left in the game, the number one rushing team should have shifted to the running game and run the clock out. Instead, they stuck with the cute girl they brung to the dance…..should have gone to that ugly girl/rushing game and run the clock out.
Heck, with a freak TD off the shoe, maybe it didn’t matter what AZ did, it just wasn’t to be. The best part was when my college roommate, who has lived in Tucson for 30 years, called and we discussed the game as the dawgs put up their last 22 pts. Sweet.

Jake's touch on the long ball was good.
Missed a couple, but had some bad drops (Polk, Kearse).
We had absolutly no business winning that game. Love it.
How many flares did they run? 10? 15? I didn’t see one single adjustment until the Foster play.
by Hawkdawg on Oct 11, 2009 12:03 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
it wasn't that good.
…the Polk one was technically a drop only because he almost got to it. That ball hits him in stide and he goes to the house. His touch is definitely better than last year, but he’s not Mark Sanchez yet.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
by Gekko Mojo on Oct 11, 2009 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep. Jake needs to learn that it’s better to underthrow the long ball than overthrow it. Underthrow it and your WR has a shot at making an adjustment on the ball and catching it. So long as the defender on the play has his back to the ball, the receiver has a decided advantage. This is the one area where I think Fouch has an edge on Jake.

AWESOME
I am impressed with the effort that the defense gave tonight. They were the definition of “bend but don’t break” tonight. Again. I think Holt knows he doesn’t have the talent he needs to run his type of defense, so he does what he can. I wish he would have figured out the bubble screen before the TD play, but I am happy we have a coaching staff that can make adjustments after the game begins. I can’t believe I am excited about a 6 win season, but if we can get there, I will try to make the bowl game.

What a hell of a game. With 5 minutes left I’m thinking “well this sucks”…with 2 minutes left I’m thinking…“PLAY SOME D”….they did.
One of the more improbable wins I’ve watched in Husky Stadium. We lost every facet of the game except turn overs and score board.
I taped the game for my buddy Taft because he’s in eastern Washington trying to get a steelhead to hit a fly. He’ll be here for the Oregon game…he gets the tape then.
On to Tempe….will get into Sun City on Thursday.

I hate Los Vegas, it tends to bring out the worst in people. Just stay sober while you are there, be an observer, and watch what goes down. People can be F’ing disgusting! and you can see all the Deteriorata in Lost Wages.
We win this coming week, which is quite conceivable, and then we get the Quakers in Seattle, were we are relentless if not flawless. (So far this has been one of the best home game seasons ever!) Find a way to keep winning games, and we can do a whole lot better than Freaky Town.

has a hat matching his screen name.
i walked past the man on my way to celebrate post game. i should have grabbed him and affirmed our blogfan comraderie but alas, I chickened out. i was the 22 yr old w/ the retro baseball husky jacket and my wife had gold leggings and the nike weasel dog head hat on. we’ll see each other in the south parking lot soon enough my friend.
a couple of comments on the game.
play calling: to my recollection there was one pass to a TE in the second half, the td to middleton to set up the go-ahead pick six. that’s a strength that needs to be exploited against teams with good db’s like zona. on that note, props to chris izbicki on a great catch, even if it only went for about 6 yds. pass-catching TE’s we got, we ought to use them a little more.
the other thing i have to say about play calling is the lack of passes over the middle like the type that worked so well against notre dame. jake has improved a lot, but his biggest weakness is the loft pass down the line on fly routes. that pass has been open for three years running and jake has yet to find the right arc on that particular pass play. until he does, post plays plays downfield, please.
defense: it’s not like the dogs are without some tools, but holt loves to play high stakes. everyone in the world know holt’s gonna bring a linebacker or a corner, but i didn’t see a lot of guys show blitz and drop back into coverage. mr holt, please know we don’t have usc athletes and win a turnover by faking a blitz now and again.
special teams: sucked. except for nick folk: sucks in practice, comes through on saturdays.
finally, refs: we got burned on that unnecessary roughness in the first, lucky on the reversed fumble by jordan polk. both were awful calls that fortunately balanced each other out, but several more followed. the pac 10 really needs to get its shit together on this.
i’d feel a little ambiguous about enjoying this victory if washington hadn’t outplayed lsu and notre dame. as kurtis blow has famously rapped: “that’s the breaks”.
in the end, a big win for the dawgs that i was thrilled to witness. the game against ASU is more than winnable and should be a real barometer for how good this team really is.

good points ..
… although Holt really doesn’t blitz very often. Unlike some other Pac 10 teams that blitz 2 of every three plays, I only mentally noted about a half dozen blitzes throughout. Of course, with all those screens, we may have been blitzing more, but it never was evident.

Maybe a post I should leave for tomorrow...
But when are the Fans going to start supporting the Dawgs with all they’ve got? Seahawks fans pride themselves on being loud and causing false starts as they should. But as a young Tyees in the north end of the stadium we get bad looks for screaming our guts out on every down. Those kids are giving there all and I can’t imagine giving anything less as a fan. Hopefully the good old days of shaking the echoes of Husky Stadium will return soon, because homefield advantage should be embraced. Not frowned upon.

The sound of silence
I know what you mean and I totally agree. At one of the Rose Bowls that I attended, against Iowa, I believe, a woman sitting a few rows in front of us kept giving us nasty looks for cheering. And we weren’t even being particularly loud or out of the ordinary. I don’t want to offend people, but come on — IT’S THE ROSE BOWL, lady! I don’t get people like that. If they want silence, stay home! She left a few minutes into the first quarter. Strange…
Of course, even when I watch the games on television, I tend to go a bit crazy. My voice was recovering all week from the Notre Dame game.

TYEE
I attended for 44 years and never got past the five yard line. That’s where the Husky fans are.
Never considered the TYEEs as true Husky fans. They bought there way in and come over here when the Seahawks are down.
By the way I was on the aisle on the other side the six year line were the Johnny come lately TYEEs. I know of people who started buying season tickets in the thirties and who were moved from the 35 yard line under cover to the end zone. So much for fan loyalty.
And the night games were the last straw. Still an ardent adherent though.

I don't know what stadium you guys are going too . . .
but it’s not the same stadium I’m going to. I sit in section 22, row V (30 yardline, lower bowl, mid way down, uncovered), I sit around a bunch of old “farts” who know how to cheer on the Huskies. I always lose my voice at Husky games, and not once have I EVER gotten dirty looks, or people upset at us. Shoot the old “farts” in section 22 can bring the noise, I’m very impressed with the people in my section.

Not to throw salt in the wound for Arizona fans
but the question about them being a great running team may have been inflated. 30 rushes for 77 yards. Granted Foles had a great game with bubble screens and short shots all night but the running game was not that impressive. I think the question about Polk vs Grigsby was answered.

Foster's Interception
I was watching the game with a friend who is a brand new Husky Fan recruit. Was explaining to him the “Bubble Screen”. Very High percentage High School Play. Easy to complete but very dangerous. If it is intercepted it is 99% sure TD for the defense. Foster was brilliant, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. As soon as the QB turns step in front of the WR force the QB to look elsewhere. The freshman was not ready for that, made a bad pass to inside guy. Great play by Foster. Go Dawgs

You can’t even imagine how I’m kicking myself. Never would have made the ferry if I had stayed, and I wasn’t up for driving around to Kingston. And unfortunately we made plans based on a 7pm start time, and then the kickoff getting pushed back really messed us up. Yes, lots of excuses, but that’s life. another miracle
come from behind win. I only left early once in 44 years the 28-27 win over the Cougits.
The players (Cougs) begged Jim Sweeney to go for a touchdown in our end with time running out and it was intercepted for a TD followed by the Spider Gains 74 yard TD off of a bounced ball.
Got as far as Montlake and a guy came running out of his house “Hah hah, you shouldn’t have left they won the game”. We already know from the roar from the stadium. Probably the loudest ever.

I have a little girl who is 1 1/2 years old, my sister was babysitting for us, and given the way the game was going we would have considered leaving early, that was a REALLY late game, and this is coming from an air ambulance pilot who gets flights all hours of the day.
