UW to name new DC at 3:00 PM

The search for a new defensive coordinator at the University of Washington came to an end today with the announcement that Husky Head Coach Steve Sarkisian will be introducing a new DC at a press conference at 3:00 PM this afternoon.

The announcement comes directly from the UW media department and was distributed to newspapers and radio stations within the past hour.

All speculation is clearly centered on current USC defensive coordinator Nick Holt who flew to Seattle either yesterday or early this morning to negotiate a contract for the job.

UW coach Steve Sarkisian said last night he was in talks with Holt and hoped to know something one way or the other soon. Sounds like they got it done and Holt's the new DC.

Washington had to open up the purse strings if the hired Holt because he was making over $500,000 per year at USC. His title will likely be defensive coordinator and assistant head coach which would justify the extra salary they had to pay him to bring him into the fold.

This is a huge hire for Steve Sarkisian because it tightens up everything on the defensive side of the ball. Holt has a national reputation as a defensive coordinator that has been earned by the performance of his defensive units while he has been at USC.

Here is a link to the LA Daily News concerning the subject on why he was interested in the job.

It will be interesting to see the final mumbers on his contract.

I find Condotta’s blog interesting in that he throws out the idea that Tormey might come back and work with Holt.

by NeuroDawg on Jan 5, 2009 11:17 AM PST reply actions

No Tormey

The last coaching staff finished 0-12 and for that reason I don’t want any personnel from that staff coming back. Sarkisian would be wize to start fresh.

He lied?

Calling that reporter a hack might be too kind. I can’t believe he would post that in the actual article like there are no other variables like Holt not wanting info to come out in the paper before he gets a chance to talke to the kids, other coaches, etc.

I hate it when reporters try to interject themselves into a story …

BTW – great blog.

Wow, I'm almost tingling w/ excitement

At first I was a little nervous when Sark’s prospects for coaching positions were young guys from non-BCS schools. Then he hired Michalzchic and I was thrilled, he’s obviously got a great pedigree, then silence. Now he’s hired Nick Holt and my head is spinning.

No offense to crazidawg, but his posts sometimes rub people the wrong way. However, he called this one coming months back, and it seems like he hit the nail on the head. Props crazidawg, you may lay it on a little think at times, but I’ve never been one to deny credit where credit is due.

Also, some props are due to Molly Yanity. To quote the reader Go Dawgs from his post MOLLY: … “I feel bad for molly she has resorted to making stuff up to keep her blog moving I think it is time for you to blog for dollars Berkowitz and step in at the PI.”

I think all Husky fans appreciate Bob Condotta’s work because he often has good information and he relays it fast and frequent, but MY is a pro too, and she had this one from the start.

It’s such a good day to be a Husky football fan. UW now has the top staff of assistants in the conference w/ Walker leaving UCLA. It might take a couple of years, but it feels like they’ll be trembling at the feet of mighty Washington once more.

With this hire

do you think that there will be some big name Def Recruits switching? Boyd has already opened up and the linebacker from Hawaii would be a Huge get for us. I am very excited!

Crazidawg deserves to pop some bubbly.

Apparently Holt is still coming here

just postponing until tomorrow, per Bob C.

Looks like we just got a JC TE to commit…dont know anything about him but he is 6’2 250. Maybe a linebacker in the future…who knows. Any more info would be great if someone has it.

by bigdave967 on Jan 5, 2009 2:27 PM PST reply actions

I doubt they recruited him for LB given we have major depth issues at TE next year – only Izbicki and Middleton return as scholarship TE’s. From what little info I’ve seen on it, he’s considered a blocker rather than a receiver. This is a good pickup from a depth/class balance perspective – hopefully he’s a decent player.

brace yourselves

…if it’s another offer for Holt who could it be? LSU just hired the ex-Tennessee coordinator Chavis. ND still has Corwin brown & Tenuta. Michigan sucks and he’d be a fool to go there. Who else is looking that has enough pull?

Not to worry, Holt is hired. It appears the press conference was delayed for other reasons (Holt’s plane was delayed perhaps?)

Hot’s hired. The UW has issued a press release announcing the hire.

According to the release his title is Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator.

I wonder if Holt will coach the DL and Nansen will coach the LB’s, or will it be vice versa?

by kirkd on Jan 5, 2009 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

whew thats a relief! Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator..thanks Neuro… looks like he & Sark will be joined at the hip..I like that.

Holt won't be soley coaching a position

Holt will be DC and Assistant head coach, He won’t have sole responsibility for a position.

Crazi Called it ... Pop!

And the bubbly is overflowing! Now I hope you fellas start taking my message post a little more serious. No I am not going to brag.

Look back over some of my post. Holt wants to be a head coach again, but his name wasn’t surfacing as a legit head coaching candidate. Why? Because everybody knows that Carroll has his finger prints all over the USC defensive system. Holt hasn’t built anything on his own yet and therefore I thought he needed the UofW job as much as we needed him.

Yes he is going to take a pay cut, but think of the long term scope of it. If he can turn our defense around, his name is likely to right to the top of a very short list for head coaching jobs.

Sorry it took me so long to get on the board. My Christmas vacation came to a screeching halt this morning and I returned to my work. This is the news I’ve been waiting for!

Note: Remember when Woodward mentioned we were going to be tough? We just got that toughness from Nick Holt, Baby! WOOF!!!

by crazidawg on Jan 5, 2009 4:55 PM PST reply actions

LBs are going to have one great teacher!

Oh I think Nick will assume a role as a position coach. I think Holt will probably take control of the linebacking corps. Holt grew up a LB and I’m quite certain the guy knows very well how to teach the LB tenacity we need. He’s still a young coach and I would imagine he wants to be hands-on. Look for him to coach linebackers.

by crazidawg on Jan 5, 2009 5:02 PM PST up reply actions

You know I saw that to crazi...

When I watched the Rosebowl game I saw Carroll micro managing Holt on the sidelines. He controls the defense and that won’t be the case for Holt at Washington. I’m sure the final negotiations had to do with “showing him the money”.

Bob C says

that Holt will not coach a position.

Best LB coach on west coast- Nick freakin' Holt BaBY!

I was dead on with the hiring of Holt over a month ago. Are you questioning me again? Holt is a young coach, who wants to be a major college head coach. He hasn’t built anything on his own yet. Pretty sure the guy will want his signature all over this Dawg defense! Holt is a gifted D guy and he will want to restore the defense as quickly as possible. And in order for him to do that sooner rather then later will require a hands-on approach. He is one of the best LB teachers on the west coast. I think he is going to want the very best coaches teaching every unit. Not sure if he can find a better LB teacher other then himself.

Holts D’ Man! WOOF!!!

Sorry Fellas...

Yes I said I wouldn’t brag. Hope you can find some how to forgive me. I JUST GOT EVERYTHING I WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS and I just about crapped my pants when I heard the news. Now you see why it came off as bragging.

Now all we need is the rennovation of the stadium to be final and announced. Haven’t heard from any duck, beav, or cougit fans lately, I think they might be feeling a little envious, where they are laying awake at night asking themselves how does an 0-12 program hit two homeruns in hiring two of the very best coaches in the country?

Carroll???

With all the major USC defections to UDub, does anybody get the inkling like me that Pete Carroll might be secretively considering a switch back to the pros? Denver is open and is one of the best NFL franchises in the league. Looks to me as if it would be a win-win situation for Carroll to move into.

by crazidawg on Jan 5, 2009 5:50 PM PST reply actions

Hard to see Carroll bolting for the NFL unless he’s granted full control, and the trend in the NFL is moving away from that type of arrangement. I think Carroll wants to win a few more National Championships at USC before taking on a new challenge.

All that goes out the window though if he gets the sense that USC is ever on the verge of NCAA sanctions, but I’d bet heavily against that ever happening. If Ohio State and Oklahoma can avoid penalties from the stuff that’s happened at those two places in the last 5 years, nothing of significance is going to happen to USC over Reggie Bush.

by kirkd on Jan 5, 2009 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

KIRKD I see we’re on the same page. I think Carroll fully expected to get one of those NCs this year with the team he had. So he was thinking of possibly repeating if they won with Sanchez this year and he came back the next. Or worst case scenario Sanchez leaves and they win another NC with either Mustain, Corp or Barkely at the helm, which totals 3 or 4 years max.

by 206 on Jan 5, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

For the same reason that

… Mora wanted to stay in Seattle, the economics are much more attractive in the pros, especially with an org like Denver. I’m not saying that is all that Pete cares about – in fact, I’m sure it isn’t. I’m just saying … it can’t hurt. Plus, living in Denver is not a bad alternative to LA.

You know me I'll entertain your crazi-ness

I think something is going on at USC maybe Carroll doesn’t have specific plans for the NFL or anything but maybe he’s at least put an expiration date on his time at USC. That would be exactly the kind of info Petey would tell his protege baby boy Sark & his good old buddy Holt.

Even if he just said “I think I’m going to reevaluate my life’s mission in 3-4 years” or some such Petey speak it would signal that Sark & Holt need to maximize their opportunities sooner rather than later. I think if Carroll wins two more National Championships he’s gone because he’ll be among the greatest college coaches ever in winning percentage and championships.

Other people are speculating that the NCAA is still going to bite USC hard for the Reggie Bush years and that the rats might be leaving a sinking ship. I don’t buy it. I think USC got away clean with that but there might be another investigation we know nothing about. But something’s going on and I think Petey is at least considering how much longer he’ll be at USC.

by 206 on Jan 5, 2009 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

Concur- something isn't right down there

Something is definitely going on. Maybe Carroll is getting a little bored of his tasks in college- I hardly doubt it, but possible. Maybe he is tired of getting screwed out of potential national championships? As it turned out the OSU loss was the equivelent of Florida dropping a game to Ole Miss. Worse yet- USC lost to OSU on the road, while Florida lost to Mississippi at home. Both the Beavs and Rebels finished with identical 9 win seasons. Florida was able to bounce back into contention, but USC was held at the No.7 and No.5 spots the remainder of the season. Something’s not right in La la land.

Honestly, I don’t think Carroll wants total control in the NFL. I think he’d be intrigued to work for an owner who wants to win and do it the Pete Carroll way. Pete didn’t get that from his other two NFL jobs. It was the owner’s way. Denver’s owner (name unknown) is a coach’s owner – not a player’s owner if you know what I mean. All I am saying is don’t be surprised if Carroll is approached by the Denver Broncos.
