In-n-Out vs. Dick's

On its way to Tempe from Tucson last night, the Huskies stopped at an In-and-Out Burger for a late-night snack. "That one's worth the wait,'' Romar said of a restaurant with a cult following in California and Arizona. "You don't get that every day.''

Romar's right, but most of Condotta's blog commenters disagree.  I agree with Romar.

Would Dick's do this for you?

 have it your way

I'll settle for a Double Double w/grilled onions, chocolate shake and fries, but would they? :)

To be fair...

I’ve never had a burger at Dick’s, other than my own.

I ate at an In and Out...

…after hearing all the hype and was not impressed.

Dicks or In and Out?

They are two completely different things and I love both.

Dicks I would say is in the the original 19 cent simple hamburger genre of Drive-Ins. Burger, Cheeseburger, Special, and Deluxe. All good and the only customization allowed is a 5 cent container of chopped onions.

In and Out has better quality ground beef and is a bigger sandwich which can be customized anyway you like. You want a double double wrapped in leaf lettuce and no bun? You want grilled onions, burnt mustard? You want it served Animal Style?

It is a whole different thing and it is excellent.

I went to Dick’s once in 1963 and couldn’t get a plain cheeseburger and haven’t been to one since.

Double Double Cheese Animal Style with Animal Style Fries

I suggest that you try it this way next time you visit an In and Out.

By the way I think Dick’s fries with a side of tartar are the very best.

I usually go Dicks Deluxe, Cheeseburger, side of fries, with some tartar, chopped onions and ketchup on the side. Add a Chocolate Shake to wash it down and it is nap time.

Ditto with one added twist

The Double Double Animal Style with Extra Crispy Animal Style Fries will change your life…I am serious, it is a religious experience…

I just had lunch at Burger King

So either one sounds pretty good right now!

I’m partial to Dick’s, having grown up around Seattle, but I think they’re both good. I try to stop in at least once whenever I’m back in town.

Of course, if I’m in Cali, I’ll try to swing by In-N-Out, too.

The King

I think the “King” has the worst fast food chain burger.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 31, 2009 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Possibly

Today convenience made it necessary.

And I got a chicken sandwich.

The Whopper isn't the worst!

I am not a fan of the Whopper, but McDonalds burgers are a complete and total joke. It might be fast and simple, but it sucks as a burger.

Had a flight to LAX this month, and we had to make time for In and Out. I’m a big fan of both, so my wife will cast my vote for In and Out.

Great Regional Burgers

Steak and Shake is a midwest diner type of drive thru burger place. Great shakes and burgers.

Culver’s Butter Burgers are out of Wisconsin and they are excellent. The butter grilled buns are outstanding.

Backyard Burger is sort of a South of the Mason Line type of place that I really like. Ever have slaw on a blackened burger with bacon and cheese? Yum!

by John Berkowitz on Jan 31, 2009 11:16 AM PST reply actions

Culver's

The burgers are really good, but it’s the fried cheese curds that really do the trick. Eating both in one sitting is a delicious experience that will probably impact your lifespan.

In n Out is great!

Every time I’m in Vegas or in another city that has an In n Out, I make an effort to get there. I think In n Out is much better than Dicks.

Frisko Freeze in Tacoma

I had one of those last time I was out and it was good but I prefer Dicks.

Kind of what I thought..

The burger discussion is as good as the football! I fell in love with In-n-Out with my first double double and believe me, at that point in my life getting me to eat onions took some doing. I can’t get enough onions, at least grilled, or caramelized, now. The recipe on how to make one is online somewhere.

John mentioned butter grilled buns and I’ll have to try that place one day because along with her homemade relish, my grandma’s buttered and toasted buns made for an awesome burger. I can’t duplicate it.

My current favorite burger involves ground rib eye, buttered and toasted bun, mustard, pickle, 1/2 lb. of loosely packed freshly ground rib eye, three slices of bacon, two of sharp cheddar cheese and alfalfa sprouts. Like 22 said…it’s what you like and there are a lot of ways to like a good burger. If you’re serious about burgers, check this place out.

Seriously, I didn’t know that Dick’s would be featured on the page. What an odd coincidence!

by hairofthedawg on Jan 31, 2009 12:27 PM PST reply actions

Dick's is the best, but Kidd Valley is awesome as a local place, too.

In-N-Out is overrated. I ate their once and have NO desire to eat there again.
Give me 2 cheese, 2 fry, and a chocolate shake from Dick’s or a Burger Dip with cheddar and BBQ sauce with their shake of the month from Kidd Valley over animal style 5×5 burgers.

Burgermaster

I used to enjoy going to Burgermaster on Aurora, U-Village, and Bellevue. There was also one South of Olympia that was a great place to hit on the way to a game in Oregon but it has been gone for awhile.

I like Kidd Valley but I hear they arent as good as they used to be.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 31, 2009 12:38 PM PST reply actions

Burgermaster

was a great burger, just five miles from my place at Grand Mound and I-5. It and an old gas station were torn down to make way for a fancy Shell station with a Mickey D’s in it. I’ve never been in it other than gas for the lawn mower.

The Sand Castle in Ocean Shores has the best Halibut burger around, the Lighthouse on Simpson in Aberdeen has a good local burger as does Eagen’s Big T around Olympia-Tumwater-Lacey

Fatburger

I took a business trip to the L.A. area about 9 years ago now with a co-worker that had previously worked in L.A., and he insisted we all hit up In-n-Out first thing after we arrived at LAX. I didn’t get the obsession. It was decent and all, but nothing to make me go nuts over.

For my money, the best burger chain out of California is Fatburger. It’s not dirt-cheap like Dick’s, but they make real good burgers & great skinny fries. I wish there was a franchise in Seattle (as it is, I make sure to drop in when I’m passing through Issaquah or find myself in Bellevue).

Hard to top Red Mill though for local burgers.

IN & OUT

love’em….My wife and I hunt them down whenever we are in an area that has one. Vegas, Palm Springs, AZ. California….we have friends that will road trip to northern California just for the In & Out craving….(we love to take road trips too). Dicks are okay, I have had good ones there and not so good, sometimes the location or chef makes a difference….the Ram makes a good Burger. I LOVE hamburgers!! my favorite food!

Shoops in Indiana

They have some of the best burgers EVER. Nothing I have had in Chicago has even begun to rival a Schoop’s burger. The crispy golden meat-hunkiness hanging off the edge of the golden toasted bun is to die for. Shoops special edge is just that – a crispy edge on the burger.

They have twenty locations in Northern Indiana, Chicago, and now are opening stores in Las Vegas.

They have Green River Soda!

What's Green River Soda?

That’s a new one on me. I can hardly wait to get my sourdough yeast culture started again so I can post a pizza comparison thread. http://slice.seriouseats.com/ for a lot of good pizza reviews. Their preferences aren’t everyone’s though. That site did turn me on to how to make a good crust. Next purchase is a grill and a replacement pizza stone…and some containers for growing yeast.

by hairofthedawg on Jan 31, 2009 2:27 PM PST reply actions

can you compare it with something?

Squirt was always a favorite of mine, wow, that a long time ago.

by hairofthedawg on Jan 31, 2009 3:05 PM PST reply actions

Compare?

It is a lemon lime drink that has a much deeper flavor than a 7-Up.

Green River

There is nothing like a Green River and I used to have them mixed for me when I was a kid at places like the G.O. Guy Drug Soda Fountain.

Spud's count????

Kidding, but between the two I would have to go with In and Out burger and Dicks fries. Like John said, the tartar with the fries is the best.

I will say this though, philly cheesesteaks are the best food anywhere…and if you dont get it from Philly its just a cheap knock off trust me. I dont care if the guy claims he is from Philly or not, Its the ONLY good thing about this whole god forsaken city.

by bigdave967 on Jan 31, 2009 3:07 PM PST reply actions

I've heard that before...

about cheesesteaks, but I lived on them for the week I was in Jersey for a friend’s wedding, well, that and beer, but is there really that much of a difference? I’ve never had one from Philly.

by hairofthedawg on Jan 31, 2009 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

South Philly

I hear going down to South Philly to Geno’s or Pat’s is the only way to do it.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 31, 2009 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

I remember Taco Times

but haven’t been to one in years. What is it about them that brings you back? I think I can still find one in Oly somewhere.

by hairofthedawg on Jan 31, 2009 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

Jim's on South Street is a personal favorite.

Its not just the cheesesteak you are paying for. You are also paying for the long lines, smell of grease, and the horrible service that usually ends with some one behind the counter yelling…its great!

by bigdave967 on Jan 31, 2009 3:55 PM PST up reply actions

gotcha...

kind of like the soup nazi on Seinfeld then….I haven’t had a bad cheesesteak yet though wherever I go.

Spud

We can do fish and chips some other time.

I have to do three things when I come to Seattle.

Dicks, Taco Time, and fish and chips.

I like Spuds, Ivars, Totem House, and even Skippers if you can still find one open.

Gourmet Cheese burger is great too especially with the onion rings!
John what is an “Animal burger” and “Animal fries”?

Red Robin...

Love it! I was actually really pleased with the Ram at Northgate when i was in town during Thanksgiving. Seattle has great food.

Animal Style

Make sure your next trip to In-N-Out comes Animal Style. It will prove its better than Dicks.

by zeeehjee on Jan 31, 2009 9:27 PM PST reply actions

Animal Style

“Animal Style” = The double meat is dipped in yellow mustard and frilled. They then add double cheese, pickles, extra spread and grilled onions. This in addtion to the ample lettuce, tomato and raw onion.

“Animal Style Fries” = fries with cheese, spread, grilled onions and pickles if requested.

Grilled Onions

The Grilled Onions are the key at In and Out. They blend nicely with the cheese and special sauce. Nice gooey mess.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2009 9:53 AM PST reply actions

vive la difference

Dick’s is Dick’s, and In-and-Out is part of SoCal car culture. We all have our personal favorites, and the luckiest can appreciate another’s taste, though sometimes it’s more the setting than the substance—even a petrified piece of discarded animal parts is still A Hot Dog At Yankee Stadium.

So I’ll risk my loyal purple neck by nominating another Pac-10 jewel, well-known to the fans at USC: the Tommy Burger. This is best appreciated standing outdoors at the original Tommy’s on Beverly and Rampart. Go the first time with someone who can tell you how to order and get through the line, and don’t even think about ordering one without chili.

Hey John: maybe after you’re done with the all-time teams, you can publish some kind of “Best Of” food and/or watering hole guide for travelers in the conference? Maybe even recruit the other SB Nation blogs to nominate what they’re most proud of in their own locale…

In and out

There was no flavor there, to me anyway. Is it me or is it just a basic burger with no spice and nothing special. I guess I’m past the point in my life where half a beef on a bun impresses me.

Dicks will always have a place in my heart....

We used to go to the one on 45th in middle school, then it was the one up near Lake City in high school, then back to 45th during college for hangover food. Lots of good times.

Having said that, In-n-Out blows them away in the quality department. Their animal-style burger is awesome. I would definitely take Dicks’ fries BEFORE they started using that healthy oil they have now, completely ruins them. In-n-Out fries have always tasted stale to me, but I haven’t tried the “well-done” request yet.

In and Out Fries

In and Out uses fresh cut potatos with no skin left on. I think they use a smaller potato so the fried are shorter tham I like.

by John Berkowitz on Feb 1, 2009 8:17 PM PST reply actions

I've never been to In and Out,

but I can say this about Dicks. I don’t really like fast food, and I don’t really like burgers, but I’ll eat at Dicks any times. their burgers and fries are the best. Plus it brings back good memories of when I had season tickets to the Sonics and would go to Dicks before every game.
