Sark speaks

Steve Sarkisian was at tonight;s game with all the recruits and he was formally recognized during the game with all his assistants. According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle times this is what he had to say.

"I'm going to be brief but I'll tell you what, this is the greatest coaching staff in America right here, guys.

"We cannot wait for Labor Day weekend. We've got a lot of hard work to do but when Husky Stadium is rocking with all of you guys in here, the Dawg Pack rolling, and we are getting physical people and knocking them around, we are all going to celebrate and together bring Husky nation back to where we need to be.''

Can you feel the new excitement?

I have to say last year at this time the recruiting news was way better but the coaching situation sucked. I was watching UCLA get a new staff that was supposes to be the dream team. I have to say I am happy with the coaching situation and the recruiting will take care of it self with wins. What do you take from what Jake heap had to say about the recruiting?

Good to see Sark at the game

Sarkisian needs to be at these games. The program needs any exposure it can get and let me tell you. Getting those recruits into the Ucla/Washington game could be a homerun!

These fellas got the taste of what HuskyNation is all about. Arguably the loudest venue in both football and basketball. Wait until we start winning again in Husky Stadium. You think Autzen is loud? You ain’t seen (heard) nothing yet!

Go Huskies! WOOF!!!

Hey, we agree again.

Normally you sound like you’ve had too much of the “kool-aid”. But this time you are right on, NOTHING compares to Husky Stadium when the fans get going. I believe it’s been recorded at 138 decibel’s, which is amazing seen as how a jet at takeoff power is only 115-120!!! We don’t even need noise makers like Oregon and Boise State, just our “. . .leather lungs together.”

Commits

Realdawg reports that Tucker has commited…

by Lotar on Jan 24, 2009 11:08 PM PST reply actions

Tucker

He had great film and picked UW over ASU ifit is true.

I am not big on text messages.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 24, 2009 11:13 PM PST reply actions

Excited? Not really.

But I’ll start getting there if they haul in a bunch of those JC guys and actually get them in school. Even then, it would still be nothing but a bunch of promises and this program has failed to deliver on a lot of promises the past several years.

Expectations

You have to understand that Ty did nothing this year for recruiting, esepecially after he was fired. There was no base for Sark to work off of and he inherited an 0-12. With the low talent in state this year I think you have to have realistic expectations.

Also, like Lotar said, you can’t blame Sark for Ty’s problems.

by bigdave967 on Jan 25, 2009 7:35 AM PST up reply actions

Sure, I guess

But I’m not going to get excited over something that is entirely unspectacular. What this staff has accomplished so far is not anything I wouldn’t expect any other incoming staff to have been able to achieve.

Hence, there’s no reason to be excited yet. All it is right now is a bunch of appealing words.

by discovolante on Jan 25, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

I get where you’re coming from, but I think you’re being a tad cynical. Turning a commit from USC is nothing to sneeze at (Vehikite) and not something just any coaching staff could accomplish.

I agree that at the moment, the class is nothing special. But there are a few guys that could change that (Boyd, Hasiak, Wade, Warner) and Tokolahi looks like a real sleeper.

Given the situation Sarkisian inherited, I think he’s done an above-average job so far, with the potential to do a great job.

Of course, the real test for his recruiting will be next year when he’s had a full year to ramp up and a bumper in-state crop to secure.

by kirkd on Jan 25, 2009 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

Like I wrote

It’ll make me more optimistic if they get a bunch of the JC guys. Quite honestly, I see no way to get excited over this recruiting period unless they start stealing plenty more committed players. Get back to me the first week of December and I’ll have a better idea if I can be excited about this coaching staff. :)

Don’t we have a right, if not an obligation, to be cynical? Emmert has sold us a bill of goods at every opportunity.

by discovolante on Jan 25, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

Every opportunity? Woodward is a bill of goods?

Emmert’s mistakes to me were approving Turner’s choice to hire Willingham and then not making the gutsy call to fire him last December.

I don’t blame Emmert for the hire of Turner, because that was all but done already when Emmert was hired.

by kirkd on Jan 25, 2009 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

I don't want to come off like I'm badmouthing everybody under the sun...

but of course Woodward is/was a bill of goods. Emmert made this big deal about how they’ll scour the scour the country to find the very best AD for Washington and it ends up being… Emmert’s sweet-talking politco pal “temporarily” occupying the AD position.

And what excatly has Woodward done that proves he gets it? Firing Willingham? Gee, that sure was forward thinking. Employ a bunch of buzz words while talking about what Husky fans wants? Words, like I wrote before. Hiring Sarkisian? Only great if you buy in to all the rhetoric, because he’s otherwise a complete unknown quantity even now.

Now, if Woodward can employ his political savvy and get the $150 million? Then I will give Emmert a little credit for having a clue and not just following the path of least resistance.

by discovolante on Jan 25, 2009 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

Sarkisian

I think the Sarkisan hire was excellent even though I was unimpressed at the time.

I think it became obvious that everyone has seen the same things Woodward saw during the interviews over the past month. Tough to find fault for hiring him over anyone else tha thad interest.

I guess I bought in to the rhetoric.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 26, 2009 9:11 AM PST up reply actions

Not just Sarkisian, but Woodward too – word from most insiders is that Woodward “gets it” and the changes he’s implemented in the department have been very positive.

by kirkd on Jan 26, 2009 9:36 AM PST up reply actions

Yep, the tough part is still ahead.

So far it seems as though Sark has done everything right. But none of it matters if it doesn’t translate into wins! We’ll start to see what this staff is made of come spring ball.

Not really

You can’t hold the current staff responsible for the past several years… Thats like getting re-married and blaming your new wife for your X-wife’s infedelity. Unless the two of them your X and new wife were together it just doesn’t wash. SO let the excitement begin.

by Lotar on Jan 25, 2009 7:15 AM PST reply actions

Sorry

But this is like getting excited about my new wife putting out twice a month because my ex-wife put out twice a year. Sure it’s better, but I’m not going to act like it’s some world-changing difference.

Excited YES!!!!!!!!!

Have you guys seen the stadium proposal?! I know most of you have and it is AMAZING!
I’m excited about that and this staff, they got a very late start and are still building this class up with each passing day. I’m impressed. Bob C is also reporting a commit by a big Hawaiian LBer. The buddy of Stan Hasiak. Maybe that was a mistake on Bob’s part. I was reading somewhere else that seemed to contradict that. Oh well, I guess we’ll find out eventually.

by dawgfan22 on Jan 25, 2009 7:56 AM PST reply actions

Apparently it was a mistake...

…I either had a serious brainfart or he changed the other guys commit to U$C. The LB from Hawaii that is.

by dawgfan22 on Jan 25, 2009 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

Worried about JCs

I read a lot of posts, mainly elsewhere, that are worried about being burned by JCs not getting into school. These coaches have recruited before, and I don’t think they are wasting time going after kids that can’t get into school. Considering the late start, I think they are doing a great job. If they offer a JC, I assume he has more than PE credits and will get accepted.

Admissions Office

Getting the transcripts pre approved at the admissions office is key…they are doing that.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 25, 2009 9:17 AM PST reply actions

What a concept

I assumed they were doing something like pre approval, but wasn’t sure. I understand schools have added a few privacy concerns since my day in the 60s. It also makes me wonder why Ty had problems with JCs.

by dawgdude on Jan 25, 2009 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Commits per Realdawg

The LB from Hawaii HAS apparently switched to the DAWGS over U$C. Gaise the DB out of Mt Sac has also reportedly committed. GREAT news for the DAWGS!!

by dawgfan22 on Jan 25, 2009 11:41 AM PST reply actions

Simione Vihikete (SP?)

I hope I didn’t butcher his name to bad but he’s the LB out of Hawaii who has committed to the Huskies over U$C

by dawgfan22 on Jan 25, 2009 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

Simione

I’ve always wondered what Sark really meant when he said that he wouldn’t try to steal any recruits already in the USC hopper. Maybe he just meant kids that had committed USC before he took the UW job?

It' a different story if...

…a kid wants to be pursued. These are all verbals until there is a signature on the dotted line Feb 4th.

by dawgfan22 on Jan 25, 2009 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant. That said, when the heat of battle comes, all bets are off. Carroll is all about competition, and Sarkisian learned at his side. I’d be highly disappointed if Sarkisian backed off a USC commit if he thought he had a chance to turn him.

by kirkd on Jan 25, 2009 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

I’ll trust those reports when Dawgman.com confirms them – Realdawg has a track record of jumping the gun.

Vehikite

It would be a major coup for Washington if it is true.

Dawgman doesn’t say anything unless unless they talk directly tot he kid.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 25, 2009 12:34 PM PST reply actions

Commits so far this weekend

Sounds like it was a good weekend. Three confirmed commits so far.

We firmed up the verbal with DT Semisie Tokolahi.
We picked up a solid verbal from LB TimTucker.
CB Dominique Gaisie from Mt San Antonio JC.

LB Semione Vehikite is a kid that still not has been confirmed. Word is he switched to UW from USC. That does happen but it can change ont he plane ride back home.

S Stanjivarus McKay verbaled to UW this weekend then changed his mind back to UCLA once he got home. UW has an in home with him on Wednesday.

OT Stan Hasiak was in town but no word yet on his visit. He is considered solid to California.

OT Mana Rosa was also rumored to be in town but will be sticking with OSU.

No word yet OG Eddie Williams from Mt. San Antonio who is choosing between UWand UCLA.

OG Joshua Andrews is still thinking things over and will choose OSU or UW.

by John Berkowitz on Jan 25, 2009 7:39 PM PST reply actions

No I think it was ucla...

…maybe that changed to. These verbals don’t mean much.

by dawgfan22 on Jan 26, 2009 7:47 AM PST up reply actions

UCLA

Went from UCLA, then to UW, now back to UCLA, but UW gets the last in home with him on Wed. Kids like McKay and Hasiak change their minds so much it doesnt really mean much until they sign.

by bigdave967 on Jan 26, 2009 8:12 AM PST up reply actions

Interesting quote from Hasiak’s H.S. coach, saying that island kids are very polite and have a hard time saying “no” and will sometimes commit to coaches just to get them to quit bugging them.

It’s possible Sarkisian could still swing Vehikite to the UW, and I suppose it’s possible we could get Hasiak too, but I’m not counting on it.
