vs. UO on Thanksgiving - Apple Cup the 1st weekend of December
College football is trending outward to playing in December. One reason is because the better programs want to have bye weeks at critical points in the season. I would like to traditionally schedule Oregon for Thanksgiving weekend (thur., Fri., or Sat.) then have the Apple Cup the next week in December.
Their is an ill-conceived notion that all the best players are staying or playing in the Southern States. I say if this is true then let’s turn the tide on it. I think it would be a great strategy to play the Apple Cup in snowy conditions annually. I think it would offer the A Cup a lot of national coverage and exposure. We could take it a step further and tell recruits if you want to prepare yourself for the NFL, then surely our pro style offense will benefit you, yet another thing that will benefit you is learning to play football in hell bent chilly conditions, because the NFL playoffs aren’t played in So. California in August. They are played in the Northern States in December and January. This would be a huge selling point to move the Apple Cup to the first weekend of December and make the Oregon game the weekend of Thanksgiving. It’s fool proof and brilliant!
One minor hiccup
You might get snow 1 out of every 10-20 years. So don’t bank on it.
If we get to the point of being ranked in the top 5-10, playing late is a huge advantage. Not playing for a few weeks can cause voters to forget how good a team is, just more proof of how messed up the system is.

I Hate the UW-CAL finale!!
We shouldn’t make a habit of ending our season with CAL. That’s NOT a rivalry game!! I don’t care if Gilby used to coach there or if Tedford’s rise somewhat mirrored UW’s fall. Let’s quit elevating the Cal game like it matters enough to end the season with it. Those people at Berkeley hardly care about their football program so why are we supposed to care about it??
Either we end the season with the Apple Cup or the Ducks or we end it with a non-conference national TV game! All much better options than CAL…Stop the Madness!
But
I agree in that I think both Cal and Washington fans would prefer their rivalry games to end the season
But I strongly disagree with you regarding Berkeley caring about our football team. Just check the activity at California Golden Blogs or the atmosphere when Oregon or USC comes to town and you’d see how excited people are about actual success after so many years of ineptitude.

I understand what your saying but EVERY game matters. Ending the season with Cal is becoming the new tradition it seems. I would rather end the season with WSU or the Ducks but the bye weeks are more important. I kind of like that Cal is becoming a new rivalry…the more rivals you have the more teams talk about UW…not a bad thing!
Apple Cup
UW wanted to move the Apple Cup so it would be the last game of the season but WSU was unwilling. WSU is always a pain in the ass.
Yes they are, just like any little brother!

Anywhere from 4 to 7 wins
By looking at the 09 schedule it would appear that it is going to be another juggernaut to get through. The only games that appear to be wins are Idaho in week 2, Stanford in week 4, and WSU in week 11. Then again Arizona won’t be as good due to Willie T graduating and forcing them to bring in a new starting QB.
A Six win season is a great possibility. Let’s hope Sark and Holt can improve the performance on the field by season kickoff time. On paper 4 wins looks strong and with Sark and Holt leading the charge and a healthy junior QB in Locker, we could possibly have 6 or 7 wins. But it does look like a gruesome schedule.
12 game schedules
Thinking it over, I’ve come to the conclusion that with a twelve game schedule, that has byes in it, will have to have the first game in late August or a December game or both.
The NCAA going to the twelve game season will require some changes but the AC should still be the last game. IMHO.

A tough schedule and 5+ year planning
make it difficult to change anything quick, especially when you add another mandatory conference game. I agree that the byes are more important than who we close with. Besides, I don’t think Cal is very excited about coming to Seattle in December.
The important thing was to break up the 12 week death march for our young team that misses those 15 extra bowl game practices every year. That may not happen this year, but it will happen soon.
