Berkeley Material

Garfield's Deandre Coleman commited to California today after probably being dropped by Washington after it became evident he wasn't going to qualify and his senior film was absolutely terrible

Coleman has some potential but has absolutely no chance of qualifying so his recruitment has been more about a pecking order to get in line for him after he does a couple of year at a JC.

Coleman entered the summer as the top recruit in Washington but played like a soft tub of goo for a weak Garfield program in the Kingco League last season. Washington has too many tubs of goo on the roster ight now so his loss is really no big deal.

Scouts say there are certain plays where he steps up with a quick first step so coaches think he has potential. The lack of work he has put in concerning academics and overall conditioning makes him more of a project than a slam dunk.

?

Has anyone heard any real DC candidates? I wonder if he is looking for a middle of the road type so he isn’t over powered his first year as a head coach. I remember last year around signing day everybody knew that this last season was going to be tuff and that the 09 season was where we where going to start seeing light at the end of the tunnel, I still see a lot better of a team than was on the field am I the only one?

not really too upset

I haven’t heard anything good about Coleman since he was highly rated before his senior season.

Disappointed in deAndre

that he wouldn’t get it done. Yesterday there was a fairly good artical in Times on Garfield coach and the problems he faces. If DeAndre doesn’t make a change in life, he could easily waste his opportunity to escape. As a Garfield alum I am double disappointed in this young man.

I wasn't impressed by Coleman

when I watched a TV interview of him. He came across as borderline retarded.
I’ve read he’s a very lazy player from people that go to games in the metro area to watch HS prospects

Stock dropped?

Is that why his rating dropped? I noticed he’s now down to a 3 star recruit and previously he had been like a 4 or 5 star. Too bad but these kids need to realize you have to start working in the classroom and on the field if you want to achieve your goals.

Keith Price

I was reading on SW that Price is going to start some recruiting of his own. We really need to get some offensive linemen.

Please...

correct me if I am wrong, but how could he get in to Cal?? Word is that he did test well and was very questionable to get into UW, but he will get into Cal??? Am I missing something….please let me know if i am.

He probably won’t get in to Cal, at least out of H.S. Word is his academics are highly questionable.

That said, if Cal steers him towards a California J.C. program, and if Coleman is able to get his AA degree, he’d be qualified to get into Cal.

Oh yeah...

…Cal made an agreement with Tedford. If any kid gets any kind of AA degree out of a California JC they can get into Cal Berkeley. Baird wanted the UW to get something similar in place to even the playing field. Are we committed to winning or not?

I thought Berkely had admissions standards ...

… second only to Stanford. Either D’Andre qualifies, or Cal’s standards have dramatically diminished (or both).

So is Rudy.

For football, all Pac-10 schools use the same admissions requirements for H.S. players with the exception of Stanford and UCLA, both of which voluntarily use higher requirements than the NCAA minimums.

For JC transfers, it’s more individualized between schools – depends on whether and how many JC credits are transferable. Thus the well-noted issues with the UW having a harder time getting JC transfers to gain admission due to the lack of a program that would accept PE credits. Plus, I believe there is a rule where California public universities have to accept players with AA degrees from California JC’s (this is one of the reasons Tedford was able to turn Cal around so quickly).

Yes they have...

…in the sense that, read my “Oh Yeah” post above.
