Uniform wish list
After reading through some comments it seems I'm not the only who wants to see some changes to the uniforms. Seen as how changes tend to happen with new coaches, I thought I'd create a place for us to create a wish list. I might even be open to sending a letter/email to Scott Woodward if any one thinks it could do some good.
What I'd like to see: Same Gold helmets, with gold pants that actually match the helmet. Enough of this tan/beige crap, I really liked how the pants looked during the Marques Tuiasopo years. The tops should be dark purple with the tradional block numbers, see Nebraska and Notre Dame. And lets stick with plain purple tops, no stripes like the late Neuheisel years. I'd also like the away pants to be the same dark purple as the home jerseys. For some reason the pants seem to be fading every year, don't we get new pants every year?
I'm looking forward to seeing what everybody else would like to see.

I hate the font used for the numbers currently, and I really dislike the matte finish on the pants – makes them look like a boring beige/tan color. If you check the pants UCLA has, they have a metallic sheen to them missing from our pants, and match their helmets really well. I’d want a gold that’s a little less yellow than theirs. I’d prefer a much darker purple for the jerseys.
I really liked the retro jersey’s last year for the USC game that were inspired by the 1960 uniforms. Take that dark blue and make it purple, put the block “W” back on the helmet, get the pants to have a more metallic sheen (and have the jersey numbers be the same color) and you’d have a really cool looking, simple, tough uniform that paid tribute to the teams that established the modern Husky tradition of hard-hitting, tough teams that had great success.
Here are a few comps I did last year to give an idea of what I had in mind:

Here’s a variation adding a stripe on the helmet:

Simple, classic, tough.

Great work!
It’s cool to actually see what it might look like.

Only the hardcore old-timers want to bring back the old look.
I’m not against the uniform change idea … and I especially like using gold and the deep purple… but I’d just as much like to see us recreate the look all together if we were going to make a change. Why not get a unique look together that the kids like and puts a new timestamp on this new era of Husky football? I know people here don’t like the Weasel, but I understand that it tests very well from a marketing perspective. We have to face the fact that the kids have their own tastes.

Well, these ideas are really “recreating” the look. It’s starting with the template of a modern version of the 1960 uniform, changing the color from dark blue to dark purple (apparently uniform makers couldn’t make a color-stable purple until the early ’70’s) and adding the iconic block “W” made famous under DJ. There are some additional minor tweaks that could be done – adding a small block “W” to the hips of the pants, maybe adding some type of purple stripe down the side of the pants.
Everyone has their own tastes, and I agree anything we do should be tested among current team members and H.S. age players to gauge how appealing it would be.
I know many people like the 2000 Rose Bowl team jerseys, and while I get the positive vibes from that uniform, it’s also in a style that’s caught in-between what’s in vogue right now – the “space age” uniforms best represented by Oregon, and the classic retro and never changed looks of teams like USC, Penn State, Alabama, etc.
Since I don’t like the futuristic look, I’d rather go to a retro-inspired, simple but tough look.

2000 Rose Bowl
Those uniforms were perfect. I think going older would be mistake. And I really could care less what teenagers think of the uniforms. I don’t here recruits complaining about Oklahoma, Texas, or USC uniforms. Stay with tradition, as soon as we go with gimmick uniforms we truly are a “second tier” program.

Thanks kirkd, didn't even dawn on me to add a pic
Must have been 1999, its exactly what I’m looking for, pants look great, top looks great, numbers look great. Simple, yet classy husky look.

kirkd – just a bit too old of a look for me, ideally I’d like modern, just not Oregon modern.
Gekko – please take that back!!! Nothing repulses me more than the thought of coming up with something “space age” like Oregon, and other “wannabe” programs. Look at USC, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, all of the top programs use a very traditional look. Anything “new” is just a gimmick.

I actually
think the uniforms “kirkd” has on his comment are by far the best of the bunch (get rid of the stripe, and it is awesome).

That picture of Marques is perfect!
The bright gold pants are the key. When they changed to the beige (and I really don’t have any idea why they changed) they totally blew it. I would be fine with everything else pretty much the way it is. The helmet that kirkd posted didn’t really knock my socks off. Therefore I wouldn’t change it. I think we should consider a deeper purple for the home jerseys and away pants.
I think the block squatty W looks better than the slimmer one. I hope the administration actually does something. This would be the perfect time and historically, Lambo/Nuehiesel/Willingham they’ve made changes in the uniform when a new regime comes in. Hopefully they’re working on it and are just waiting to surprise us.

Hey - I'm old like you - and I like the old look
… but kids these days don’t like it as much and, I think, the uniform has not really been a big part of the UW tradition like it has for USC, Alabama and Notre Dame. The kids like variety. Even in programs like Florida and Florida St – which you mistakenly called as “very traditional” have gone space age with special uniforms. Take a look:

and

I guess my attitude is that all things equal, I’d like to see the old uni’s back. But, I couldn’t care less about it as long as whatever we have juices the kids a little more.

Green?
I didn’t know the seminoles even had green in their color scheme?
by dawgfan22 on Dec 12, 2008 6:24 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
the green is one of their "special" uniforms
many schools seem to be copying the philosophy of Oregon – being able to mix and match different looks under the master scheme. The kids seem to really like it.

Miami Green
I think they used those uniforms for their clash with the Canes. Marketing tool. Notice that it is the same shade of green as the green for the Hurricanes?

Florida and FSU
Although they do, on occasion, use new uniforms. There main uniform is still the time tested tradional look. I wouldn’t be against special uniforms for special occasions, but only for special occasions.
If the only way to get recruits is “space age” uniforms, we truly are a second tier program.

I don’t see anyone advocating for Oregon style “space age” uniforms – so far it’s calls to return to the 2000 look or some type of more retro look.
Get me a darker purple on the jerseys, get rid of the current “modern” font for the numbers, get the pants to have more of a metallic sheen and I’m good. I like the retro design I posted above, but as long as the basics are covered, I’m happy.

Lighting or ?
I don’t know if it’s the lighting for the above pic of Marques but that is definitely bright gold and IMO that is what we should be wearing. I guess I’m not as picky about the purple of the jersey. I think we should at least look at a darker purple. I don’t like the stripe on the pants and prefer the older block W of the 2000 Rosebowl team (the same classic one from the DJ years)

My uniform wish list...
…starts and ends with the guys wearing them putting more big block W’s in the standings. :-)
P.S. I love the 1999/2000 look, too. That’s what I’d bring back if I were in charge.

UW Athletic Dept Decision?
They are acting like they’ll be no change for next season. Take that with a huge grain of salt. This would be the perfect time, new coach, new season, new uniforms! Or at least tweaked uniforms, I doubt if they’ll be any drastic change but maybe some modifications ie real bright gold pants and possibly back to the block W?

Lambo's Gaff
Remember when Lambo went back to the purple helmet with the square looking gold W!?
That was horrific! It looked like they went down to the store and bought some elementary school water color purple and had the equipment manager use that. I could not believe Hedges would be stupid enough to approve that BS. I remember asking her (or her secretary) about it and she said it was strictly Lambo’s call, whatever he wanted to do.

Lambo's Gaff
I actually sort of miss the purple hemets. Okay maybe it isn’t the purple helmet that I miss, but MAN were we winning and times were good!
I actually have one of those purple helmets sitting in my den. I loved coach Lambright and to this day I would take Lambo over Neuhiesel, Gilbertson, and Willingham as coach in a heart beat.
I believe Steve Sarkisian is the right man for this job. Folks have been saying that we are still trying to replace Don James. To a point that is accurate. But like USC, they sorta’ had to go in a new direction and that is when they hired Pete Carrol. Look at where that new direction has taken them. Sarkisian is that new direction that we’ve been waiting for. Husky Football is going to be back faster then you think. It’s all about motivation. Sark has it! Where Ty and Gilby didn’t. Neuheisel was just in it for himself.

James
Gee why wouldn’t we want to find the next Don James?! Duh!? I remember when usc boneheaded or struck out on several coaches before they hit a home run with Carroll. We’re all looking for the same thing. I think it makes a lot of sense for us to go to the premier program in the Pac-10 (West) for a had coaching hire. They already know the recruiting territory, really it makes perfect sense to me. If Sark wasn’t ready I don’t think he’d be Carroll’s Assistant Head Coach.

the dark era
Those purple helmets were horrible, in every way.
I saw the FSN Husky Access progam last night, they showed a few highlights of Sark getting sacked by the Huskies in 1996. The uniforms looked pretty good. The pants had a little bit too much yellow, and the purple helmets were bad. But the dark purple tops looked perfect.

I could not believe that Babs would let Lambo make such a bonehead move. Which shows she didn’t care one iota for Husky Football!

Minor alterations to our uniforms
Our gold helmet is classic and everybody knows that helmet so it is wize to keep it- no change needed.
Our home jerseys need a makeover. We need shinier purple and go back to block numbering. Also I’d like to see us use the Atlanta Falcons jersey as a template. I love how they use color out on the edge of the shoulder pads.
I love the no stripe look on pants. But our shade of gold is too soft. We need to go back to the classic gold. Also for marketing purposes down one leg we could spell out “DAWGS” downword from the hip- only on one leg though. Why not market “Huskies” and “Dawgs”?
No Oregon underoos unnies, no microscopic thin striping, and no Oregon State jerseys that look like they are sporting a bra! What were they thinking???

Great input guys!!!
I’ve really enjoyed comparing notes on the different uniforms. Looks like no one likes the “dull” look of the pants the last few years. They look like they’ve been washed a few too many times.
Also looks like the 1999/2000 uniforms were well liked. I wouldn’t go any more “rtetro” than those uniforms, personally I don’t like the retro look, and I doubt it would be popular with recruits. It also looks like going with a more modern Cal/Oregon look wouldn’t be too popular either.
So what’s the best way to let the UW know what the fans would like?

Good Topic Lear!
This has been bugging the crap out of me for several years! ND and ucla were stark contrasts. We with the dull beige and both of them with their matching gold.

I've been emailing Woodward...
…and I plan to keep emailing him. I am going to hope that eventually something will change. If you guys want to do something together I’d support that. I’ve also already sent an email to Coach Sark also. I’d be willing to bet that if he wants a change, it’ll get done. Hopefully someone is bringing him up to snuff on the culture and traditions of Washington and he’ll come to the conclusion that some changes are necessary. The ADs office also told me it takes some time to implement these changes to the uniforms. I think they may have been referring to a new design for the dawg etc. I would think color of the pants would be easier to accomplish but maybe not. Anyway, I just think they’re missing the boat if they don’t. Sark time is now and now is the time to change!
Reminds me when Nueheisel was coach, “the golden boy” could get anything he wanted out of Babs. Lambo on the other hand couldn’t get the time of day from her.

No disrespect meant to Coach Sark on the Nue comparison...
…I just believe he commands that kind of respect and can make change happen if he thinks it’s necessary.

Takes time? O.M.G. Oregon changes their uniforms virtually over night. I think we need to expand our horizons a bit with our uniforms. No I am not talking about going after the designs for Cal and Oregon or Oregon State and Arizona’s- flat out pitiful looking uniforms.
Honestly how would our team look coming out of the tunnel with jerseys that had the appeal of the Atlanta Falcons? Home and away jereseys would look real cool. This is the only major change I like- having jerseys that resemble the style of the Atlanta Falcons. This would be an ideal proposition. Why? Because it’s not that big of change, yet up to date in the apparell industry- tell me what kid who doesn’t like the Falcons jerseys?
Don’t change the helmet
Bring in shinier purple and richer and more classic gold.

i agree,we need new uniforms
I think our uniforms the last 6 or seven years are horrible, weasel included,i want a total change, look at the oregon ducks, gease when i grew up there uniforms where laughable, and there record, just like ours is now.I want our full male husky back, with some new uniform designs, and players names on jerseys,go dawgs.
