The Monday Morning Wash
There are a lot of things happening behind the scenes as we roll into a new week. First of all as of last night the Jim Mora rumors are still alive and well. As we all know this one has taken on a life of its own over the past couple of years. Ever since Mora stated that he would leave his NFL job in a playoff run to coach the Huskies the fan base has taken it as a literal statement even though Mora later stated he was joking around. This one won't die until he or someone else takes the job.
1. Jim Mora
Every Huskies fan favorite is still in this one as of last night. Some rumors were floating that he had accepted the job and that it would be announced between now and next Monday after all the details have been worked out. That of course is a rehash of the same we have been hearing for some time now and I would take that with a huge boulder of salt. I like Mora but my gut tells me he is sticking with the Hawks since the AD continues to interview other candidates.
2. Brian Kelly
Kelly is a very serious candidate and it is rumored that he may be in Seattle as early as Wednesday for a formal interview. The Bearcats play Hawaii this coming weekend and have clinched the Big East title. So coming to Seattle on the way ins't exactly a stretch by any means. We have heard that Notre Dame or Boston College would be his dream job which is a logical assumption for a nice Catholic guy from New England. A pro Notre Dame report says Kelly already has said no to UW. Take that with a huge grain of salt even though it looks like Weis may be fired this coming Friday. Kelly like Hill is a good friend of Saban and the UW job has a lot more chance for longevity than Notre Dame does. 8-4 will get you fired at Notre Dame while it will get you an extension or at least a roll-over year at Washington.
3. Pat Hill
If offered Pat Hill will accept the job. Hill is a solid coach who needs a change of scenery after 12 under funded years in Fresno. He didn't help himself with a blowout loss at the hands Boise State last week. In a perfect world they would be looking for someone to replace him at Fresno but the school lacks the money to buy him out. Most Fresno fans regard UW's interest and a subsequent hiring as a blessing. Hill issued a statement to the press that his interview went well.
4. Kyle Whittingham
Utah is likely headed to a BCS bowl and conventional wisdom says it is unlikely that UW will be able to pry an LDS coach from an LDS state. Whittingham would be a good philosophical fit at Washington from a coaching perspective. One silly rumor had Whittingham on campus last week watching a practice.
5. Chris Petersen
The door is slightly cracked from what we hear this weekend but I think UW is way past the slightly cracked door stage when it comes to making a decision. Petersen is a solid coach and the big win over Fresno and an undefeated season make him a highly desirable candidate. The negative is his penchant for privacy. That isn't exactly a good fit for a program about to emerge from four years of being in the dark ages.
6. Mike Leach
The king of quirky is now available to talk if Washington is interested. There are things I like about Leach and things I don't. A couple of glaring ones would be the absence of a strong defense and a dominant running game. You need to commit to the run and defense to win in Seattle. He also has a mixed relationship with the media despite the pirate image.
Next Up: California
With all the coaching news going on it is still hard to believe that there is still one more game left to play this season. Finishing the season in Berkeley is going to be another giant nail in the coaching career of Tyrone Willingham. This one should get ugly early and stay ugly as the players and coaches really don't have much left to play for. The Bears are finishing the season on the upswing and look for them to look to rub the Huskies nose in the turf to avenge a loss to UW last season.
Husky Basketball
I was in Los Angeles for a funeral this weekend so I missed a fine Washington performance against Pacific which resulted in a 72-54 win over a traditional NCAA tournament team. The Huskies were led by Quincey Pondexter who had one of the better games of an up and down career at Washington.
This game and the close loss to nationally ranked Florida show that the Huskies are getting better every game and should be capable of an upper division finish in the Pac 10 this season.
Comments
I think they are continuing to interview just so they have a firm backup, if Mora says no.
Kelly, I would love to see him hired if Mora stays with the Hawks, but he is a west coast guy to the core, and in the end I don’t think he would move his family out here.
If Mora says no, I think we are stuck settling with Pat Hill, and that would be very, very sad.

Hill
I think people would be surprised at what Hill could do at a school with adequate resources. For the one hundred and fiftieth time Fresno is at the bottom of the WAC when it comes to resources. I mean Idaho has more resources.
Is Hill my first choice?
No, but I wouldn’t slash my wrists if he ended up with job.

about Hill
I have serious reservations about Hill. He gets up for the big OOC games, then lays eggs in conference. He’s spent the last decade plus recruiting lesser guys, because that’s what he could get at Fresno – can he change his mindset and go after the better players that Washington can attract?
If it ends up that Hill is the guy, I’ll set aside my reservations and cheer him on, but I doubt he can get us to where we ultimately want this program – competing for the Pac-10 title every year. Maybe that’s just the reality of the situation, that we’ve sunk so low that we need a guy like Hill to get us back to respectability before we can get a coach to take us to the top of the conference.
It’s why I’m continuing to hold out hope that Mora can be convinced to take the job…

Hill or better
I think Woodward knows the score. He’s going to do what it takes to get some serious mileage out of this hire. Hill doesn’t do that. I’d rather see them hire Turner Gill or another up and coming coordinator. If you want to look at pluses with Hill it’s that he IS a California based head coach and has been for years. He would at least know the territory and have at least most of a complete staff quickly in place. He also fits the profile of a Seattle coach, believing in a strong running game. I’m not sure how his defenses and special teams have fared? My reservations about him are just that the Husky fan base needs that “WOW” factor and Hill doesn’t do that. I can see instant revenue increases if Mora or Kelly get hired.

Telling Comment
http://washington.scout.com/2/817131.html
The comments below tells alot of where the program is out and where the leadership of coach Ty is at with this team. It all starts from the top…..I supported Ty and now with more stuff coming out…I cannot stand the man and am soo sorry for supporting him.
When people talk about how physically undeveloped the team is the comments below support the fact.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
"After a year of watching the team play the younger players aren’t sugar-coating anything. They realize things need to change and they need to do their part to make things better at Montlake. The coaches might like what they see out of the team’s habits, but at least one true freshman thinks the players can do a lot better.
"I’ve definitely learned a lot from sitting back and watching the whole team and how everything works," said Glenn. "There definitely needs to be some changes around here; guys not showing up to workouts and late to this and that. We realize that as a class and we’re going to try fix those things and turn this thing around.
"From my perspective, people don’t take (work ethic) as seriously as it needs to be changed"

I heart BK
Big ND fan who started following Udub when my sister moved to Washington in ‘01. Just wondering where the info is coming that Charlie Weis may be fired Friday? Could you pass along where you picked that up? Notre Dame has a big football banquet this Friday and it would seem strange to fire him the same day. Brian Kelly is going to be a killer coach, he’s the next Urban Meyer. If the Irish do fire Charlie Weis, Brian Kelly would be my first choice. Love college football and I’ll be interested to see how the Huskies coaching search develops as it could have an impact on my Irish, if Charlie Weis is indeed on his way out…

Speculation
I’m sure it’s just that! There is a lot of angst out there because Willingham was fired at ND after 3 seasons. They reason that if Willingham was fired then Weiss should be too. Fair is fair right? Wrong, completely different situations. I think the fact that Weiss has recruited so well it buys him at least another year. If he tanks next season, I think he’ll be gone.

mora
I’m for Mora and hope he takes the job.
I also hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Charlie Weiss. I think that Weiss’ ego created problems for him, and he also wasn’t a HC at one point in his career. Also, I think he benefited from cheating while with the Pats (and I’m a Pats fan, by the way). But maybe it’s harder to go from the NFL to college football than we realize.
Anyway, I hope he takes it and does better than Weiss. And that he provides a clear schematic advantage for the Huskies when on the field, too.

Did someone call my name?
I assume it was because of another lame Charlie Weis posting -but I’ll hold my opinions.
BTW – if anywhere in this blog an argument about a college football playoff system breaks out, I would like to pre-declare my position so as to not be accused in the future of just being a contrarian. I’m against an eight team playoff but I am absolutely in favor of a bowl system plus one. My reason for this is very simple and is two parts: I like the urgency of regular season games in terms of their impact on traditional bowl races and I’m not in favor of having to give up a game or two from the schedule of most teams so that only a few teams can have a playoff.
I thought this an appropriate time to raise the point.

New Coach
I’m personally not that high on Mora especially if it is taking hi this long to decided if he want to coach at the school which is suppose to be his dream job. Bottom line, he has never really won??
Hill, if he does bring anythig he goingto bring som much need toughness to UW. I’ve never known the Huskies to be so soft even before the days of Chico Fraley have the Huskies not been this weak.
My choice would have been Christiansen just given that he is young and has something to prove at his alma mater and you can’t refute the bloodlines.
I would love to see Charlie Strong in the Mix but I’m not mad at Brian Kelly either.

Christiansen took the Wyoming job
By they way, can’t you come up with something better than “bottom line, he has never really won.” Never really won, huh, interesting, trying checking your facts. He had a winning record at Atlanta, his first season they went 11-5 and went to the NFC championship game.
If you don’t like a coach, how about giving reasonable reasons. Say he hasn’t been a College Head Coach, say he only has 3 years of head coaching experience. But don’t make your self look stupid by saying he hasn’t won.

or that he had a losing record his last two seasons and got canned after only three years?
Since you made a big deal about Ty winning with the “genius’s” players at Stanford earlier, does it not stand to reason that Jim may have been riding the coat tails of the great Dan Reeves – a man who knows a thing or two about Super Bowls?
Ahhh … I don’t buy that argument either. Mora would be a great coach for us, but is not our only good option.

There's a big difference between NFL transitions and College Transitions
Recruiting makes a HUGE difference in the college game. In the NFL you go buy the players you need. And lets be honest, Mora’s record is the best in Atlanta’s history. He was fired for his comments about the UW. The fan base no longer had confidence that he would be loyal to them, that’s why he got fired, not his won/loss record.

Petersen and Whittingham
Sounds like they are both hireable…is that a word? Whittingham is making less than 700,000 and new contract talks have broken off with Petersen. I’m not sure what the pecking order is for coaches but these guys are open! It was funny reading what Petersen said, he would not close the door on the possibility of leaving. The guy could more than double his salary, why wouldn’t you?

Cougs Attack Husky Stadium Proposal
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008457886_convention02m.html
I believe oregon’s new 200 million dollar basketball stadium is funded by tax dollars. I think the state also kicked in for osu’s football stadium upgrade. That is where we’re at folks. We live in a state with more money and can’t even finance half of a “renovation”. This is still going to be Husky Stadium with a lot of what is there just being dressed up. I think the lower bowl will be completely replaced and I would have to think that the south side will be seriously worked over. I think that was added on to in like 1958.
It’s apparently OK for billionaire owners of professional sports teams to get palatial stadiums built for their teams but public universities who generate huge amounts of tax money get nothing. I don’t have a good feeling about this. Hence I want to know what the fall back plan is?

I'd be happy with Leach...
I’ve thought for a while he was going to be our coach based on how much interest he had in the position before and how much interest he had in the UCLA opening last year. He really wants to get on the west coast. I think it’’s come down to Mora if they can get him or Leach if they can’t. I see it as a win/win.

The really good news
I read Condotta’s blog, and there is a hidden gem in it. Not only is Leach in Seattle, but he brought his wife with. If he were just here to get a bigger contract with Texas Tech or to recruit Jake Heaps, why bring the wife?
For all of you who want a strong running game, and a strong defense, and therefore don’t like Leach, it’s time to join the 21st century. I loved Don James football. But I get just as excited thinking about an offense that has 400+ yards of passing every game. I really don’t care what style of football the new coach brings in, especially if it produces 10 wins per year.
