Other possible coaching openings

Washington won't be the only school looking for a head coach in December. All of these coaches are already on the very hot list this mid season. Those are some pretty big jobs that if all open may precipitate a lot of movement in the NCAA coaching ranks. I guess you could always put Penn State and Florida State on the list but I am pretty sure they have locked in the succesors.

  • Washington (Willingham) 0-5
  • Iowa (Ferentz) 3-3
  • Tennessee (Fullmer) 2-3
  • Auburn (Tuberville) 4-2
  • Miami (Shannon) 2-3
  • Clemson (Bowden) 3-2
  • Texas A&M (Sherman) 2-3
  • Virginia (Groh) 2-3
  • Syracuse (Robinson) 1-4
  • Oregon (Bellotti)

Think about who would be interested in these type of jobs keeping in mind that Washington is the only school listed West of the Plains.

  • Chris Petersen (Boise State)
  • Brian Kelly (Cincinnati)
  • Mike Riley (Oregon State)
  • Gary Patterson (Texas Christian)
  • Bronco Mendenhall (BYU)
  • Kyle Whittingham (Utah)
  • Pat Hill (Fresno State)
  • Al Golden (Temple)
  • Jim Harbaugh (Stanford)
  • Randy Edsall (UConn)
  • Todd Graham (Tulsa)
  • Skip Holtz (East Carolina)
  • Wil Muschamp (Texas DC)
  • Dave Christenson (Missouri OC)
  • DeWayne Walker (UCLA DC)
  • Major Applewhite (Texas OC)
  • Bud Foster (Virginia Tech DC)
  • Lane Kiffin
  • Chan Gailey

Uh, I thought Oregon was “West of the Plains”.

Actually a list worthy of food for thought.

Thanks for the article on Muschamp- very intriguing.

isn’t major applewhite like 13 years old or something?

is he seriously a candidate for a head coaching gig?

Applewhite is 30

He’s young and moving up the ranks fast. He was one hell of a college QB at Texas (although his size didn’t translate and he wanted to coach), and I think he’s driven to succeed. He didn’t do so well as QB coach as Syracuse but he did turn around a Rice team as OC. I think he would work out, although he’s pretty tied into the south and unless he’s one hell of a sweet talker, couldn’t recruit heavily out of California.

my point is that i happen to think he’s way too inexperienced to be considered head coaching material at any of those top programs at this point. he might have played qb, but at his age he’s only coached for a few years and no way i’d hire him as the head man unless i was at a DII or DIII school.

I agree to a certain extent...

I think that veteran coaching experience is what is going to take this team somewhere in the next 2-3 years. But as far as recruiting goes, a former player who’s genuinely excited about the program he’s taking over can make kids buy into what he’s selling. Every head coach has to make the jump at some point, it’s a matter of opinion and preference on the direction of the whole program. I personally think your selling him short. If you look at the list, beside Patterson, Riley and Kelly there are not many legit candidates with a whole lot of HC experience. I think it might be good in the long haul to hire a motivated young assistant to build this program back up the right way.

Oregon

Bellotti isn’t on any type of a hot seat but he could move on to do something else. I could see Petersen in Eugene.

Mike Riley

There is NO WAY that he is leaving his home town, especially after what happened with the Chargers.

There are a couple of big names missing from your list that I think will be looking to possibly move:

- Greg Schiano, Rutgers
- Jim Leavitt, South Florida

Both have done pretty much all they can with the small programs that they have. Hard to see either coming west, though.

Agreed

Good luck getting Riley. He’s got three more years with the Quizz.
