111 - 52 - 2

What if I told you there just happens to be a 50 year old guy out there with a 111-52-2 record as a head coach who is currently looking for a college head coaching job with a BCS school? Would that peak your interest a little bit?

Terry Bowden is just that kind of fellow. He is looking to get back into the game again and could have interest in the Washington position. For some reason Bowden has worn a Scarlet Letter ever since his termination at Auburn in the midst of his only sub par season.

Like all Bowden's he would prefer coaching in the Southeast, but it has been almost a decade and if he wants to get back into the game he may have to do it on the other side of the country.

I am not endorsing Bowden at all. I wanted to throw his name out there again for a little discussion. I am going to leave it up to you guys to argue about the pro's and con's.

who us?!?!

John, you know better. We don’t argue on this blog! We agree on everything…

I dont like it only because he would probably bolt at the first sign of an SEC team showing interest. Maybe 2 bowl seasons then bye bye.

Just having fun

Bowden is far from the right fit in my opinion. Ten years is a lot of time to be away from the game.

He's as appealing as the guys on the list below for that very reason

I think another big issue is that we need someone who desires THIS job, not A job. Also, it’s best for it to be someone who honestly believes in the greatness and promise of the Husky program and will be convincing when he says those things to recruits. This is why guys like Pinkel and Mora are so attractive.

Coaches available right now

in addition to Bowden, there are a number of other guys with winning college records that are available right now:

- Bob Davie
- Larry Coker (National Champion)
- Glen Mason (bowl games in 7 of 10 years for Minn)
- Karl Dorrell
- Chan Gailey (bowl games in every season at GT)
- Mike Shula

I don’t endorse any of them, per se … but Coker, Mason, Gailey and Shula hold some intrigue

all of those coaches are unemployed for a good reason... they suck

I'd take Terry Bowden

I wanted him to be named coach when Lambo was fired after the ’98 season

by Purple Reign 91 on Oct 8, 2008 1:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

most of those coaches not really unemployed

for example, Gailey is an OC in the NFL right now. And I think that Shula is QBs coach Jax. Given that Jim Zorn was a QB coach last year, that is not necessarily a bad thing. I’m not endorsring any of them because I think we need something a little bit more fresh, but its just not right to disrespect Coker and his accomplishments. In addition, Mason had remarkable success given what he had at Minnesota.

Here's an idea...

what about hiring me. I can coach this team to 0-5 and they could pay me considerably less…i mean how horrible is it to think that any brain dead moron could coach our team and still have the same record as we do now!!!!!

If you want young and energitic than you have a hand wrapped coach in waiting..Lane Kiffin. The guy can sell water to a whale, ice to an eskimo, UW to a high school kid! I couldnt careless about his Oakland tenure…no one can succeed there. Al Davis is a moron. This could be his bread and butter. He is looking to make a move back to college to reestablish himself as a legit head coach so you know he will put his all into it. And he will have (hopefully) the same openness that Pete Carroll has to the media, boosters, high school players, etc. AND what if he could talk his father into coaching the defense…oh my..or what if he can persuade some USC coaches to come with him?!?!?!? This guy could be great!!!!!!!!!

Ok i have to stop now, but he is my #1 by FAR.

Let the debating begin………..now

Kiffin

He wasn’t even the third best assistant under Pete Carroll. His appointment to the Raiders HC position was a sham. Why would he be your #1 by far ahead of Steve Sarkisian? Or Nick Holt?

Kiffin is not a good candidate in my book.

Kiffin

He has the makings to bring in top recruiting classes and might be able to sway a couple of very good USC coaches to follow him. I like Sarkisian and Christiansen (SP?) but Kiffin needs to win where ever he goes to put himself back on the map and i like the fact that he will give it his all.

If we don’t get Pinkel (no way no how) than i think he or Christiansen (SP?) get the nod.

Who are the proven coaches out there that would take the job.

by bigdave967 on Oct 9, 2008 9:14 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

coker

c’mon hook ‘em – I clearly said that I did NOT endorse any of those guys. JB asked us to identify winning college head coaches who were not employed … so I made a list. Coker has a national championship and has put a ton of guys in the NFL. That’s a lot more accomplishment than most coaches have and should be respected.

Truth is, I think that Wil Muschamp is the guy Emmert is already targeting and found it interesting that JB put up that Muschamp link today. He must be sensing the same thing. He makes sense because:

- he is very well known to Emmert/Woodward
- he is a defensive minded guy – defense being the key to re-establishing the “Husky Way”
- he brings a certain amount of SEC cache
- he is the top coordinator on the market and will be a head coach somewhere next year

DON"T TAKE MUSCHAMP!

I like the huskies, because i live in graham (outside of seattle), but I love my horns and he is the best DC we have had in a good long while. Gonna be fun to see what he can do to stop that sooner offense.

Depends

If you were offered a choice of the Washington, Clemson, Miami, or Iowa jobs which one would you take? A guy like Brain Kelly may have that type of choice around the first of December.

You just really don’t know what that the final interview list is going to look like.

Who is actually interested?

Who may get a better offer?

Last time we had a dog and pony show like this Jeff Tedford (Cal), Urban Meyer (Florida), Les Miles (LSU), Dan Hawkins (Colorado), and Steve Spurrier (South Carolina) was at the top of everyone’s initial list. Dennis Erickson would have jumped at it but he was never contacted.

The final two were ND’s Ty Willingham and BC’s Tom O’Brien. Neither of those guys were in the initial grouping. Willingham came up after he was fired. His West coast ties and success at Stanford obviously earned him consideration. ND actually fired him to make way for Urban Meyer. Urban spurned the Irish for Florida.

O’Brien was more of a sleeper that really didn’t come up till the end. He asked for the job and UW told him to wait for a few days and he told them to shove it.

There are always great coaches out their to hire at any stage of the game. O’Brien was a great coach and UW passed on him for a not so great coach.

The most important thing is who is doing the picking from what is left.

Emmert made a mistake when he didn’t fire Willingham and hire Mora in December.

Turner made a mistake when he hired Willingham and should have hired O’Brien.

Hedges made a mistake when she hired Gilbertson and ignored looking outside at Mora, and Weis who were both interested in the position. June is a lousy time to hire a coach, but there were posibilities.

Hedges made a mistake hiring Neuheisel when she could have had Pinkel.

UW can’t afford another mistake this time and they know it.

$$$

They better be ready to open up the wallet. It’s going to cost them big bucks to get the caliber of coach we need.
