Announcement coming?

I keep hearing from various sources today that an announcement is coming sometime on Monday regarding the tenure of Ty Willingham at Washington.

The word is that he is going to resign and be allowed to coach the rest of the season. That isn't exactly what we all want to hear but it is a step in the right direction if the rumors are true.

I spoke with my friends over at Dawgman and they are hearing it too so there must be something going on behind the scenes.

Heard it too

I’ll believe it when I hear it from the lying lips of Ty

You would hope

You would hope that if he tenders is resignation that they would show him the door.

Agree

Just like in business, when someone gives two weeks notice give them a check for the two weeks to get them out the door so they don’t sit there and bad mouth the company for two weeks.

Tulsa

John,

Do you think Jake Locker would do well in the Tulsa styled offense? Tomorrow should be an interesting day in Montlake.

who?

just who is telling you guys this inside information?

by TacomaDawg on Oct 26, 2008 7:46 PM PDT reply actions

TD- It wouldn’t be inside info anymore if I told you. I can tell you that everyone is hearing it so either we are all being duped or it has some legs.

Kent- I think he would be great.

T90- You can count on Ty soiling everything around him if he stays on the job.

Yep

I view the burning of some of the redshirts are being done as a form of sabotage. Maybe that wasn’t his intent but the end result is that he wasted the redshirts. I’d be surprised if Ty resigns. I don’t think his ego will let him.

As far as who is feeding me these rumors I’ll keep that confidential as that was requested of me.

I'm sure John is right

In fact, I’d expect that this deal was done right around the Stanford game. I’m not an insider – so it is clear speculation … but there is sense to it. He was always going to be here the whole season unless the coach they wanted was unemployed (unlikely), so you spend a few weeks negotiating the particulars and then you wait until the team is on the verge of being lost altogether (as in the ND game). Then you publicly make the announcement to get a shot of perverse energy into the program (kind of like a 5 hour energy drink) and then you hope that the team can hold onto a bit of their “what could have been” feelings for a few weeks while they try to show the guy that they signed with a decent sendoff.

Under this scenario, no one can complain that any party was untreated fairly, the word hits the street (coaches and recruits) that the job is open, and the media gets to focus on the coaching search (and not the team) to fill the void between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Its orderly, optimal and all good copy from the administration’s POV.

I'll take it, let the coaching search officially begin.

I hope it is true!

I sat at the game Saturday and I asked myself “Self, what idiot would spend this much money to watch what I just saw.” I have been playing football or coaching since I was 5 years old and I have never seen a team that looked so inept in my life. I think Skyline HS could have played ND tougher. I think the biggest reason to make a change now is to try and change the negativity that is permeating this program. If Ty resigns, that takes care of a lot of issues…his contract, claims of anything racial, etc.

I really hope this rumor is true. It will make Monday a very happy day.

It is speculation on my part because it isn’t like Scott Woodward gave me a call.

by John Berkowitz on Oct 26, 2008 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

Your "speculation" is the one plausible scenario.

We all know Woodward doesn’t want to change coaches mid season. This scenario seems to make everybody “happy”. Willingham resigns, no changes are made until after the season. The fans get the knowledge and relief that Willingham is officially on his way out, and the coaching search begins.

Well

The coaching search began last January ; )

Like I said I have been hearing the same rumor all day from various credible sources so it is what it is.

I really don’t know what purpose it serves if Ty is still coaching the next five weeks.

by John Berkowitz on Oct 26, 2008 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

So does that mean...

If he officially resigns that we can start interviewing candidates who aren’t currently employed?

I guess what I’m asking is does this get us a head start on ‘officially’ searching for a coaching candidate? I’d assume you cannot talk to those people who are already on staffs (I’m assuming there is some sort of collusion or something.) But, could we theoretically talk to people who aren’t employed or aren’t in CFB. The two names I’d think of are Kiffin (Yay!) and Mora (No thanks!)

Short list

I am sure they have had a short list prepared for some time.

by John Berkowitz on Oct 26, 2008 9:39 PM PDT reply actions

Short list

Mora, Peterson (BSU), Tedford

by T9ODawg on Oct 26, 2008 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

Tedford?

Why does everyone always mention Tedford.

by TacomaDawg on Oct 26, 2008 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

why not?

Why wouldn’t you want Tedford on your short list? He reportedly has expressed some interest in the job at times, and reportedly he was Emmert’s top choice last time around. Why not make Tedford say “no” before moving on to other candidates?

by kirkd on Oct 26, 2008 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Tedford

His agent is a UW alum and a booster, There has been interest in the past and may very well be right now. He may be tiring of the commie atmosphere at Bezerkely, his kids have finished high school so it’s possible now.

by T9ODawg on Oct 27, 2008 7:00 AM PDT up reply actions

No logic at all to keeping him around. We will never see husky nation unite untill he is really gone.

by clanceman on Oct 26, 2008 11:34 PM PDT reply actions

Tedford is a more criedible candidate than Mora

… unfortunately. Let’s face it, Mora would have to take a 50% pay cut to come to Montlake. That ain’t gonna happen. Plus, have you seen his pass defense lately?

Pinkel, on the other hand, may be more open to it than some would have you believe. While DJ was writing it off the other day, he did say as part of his quote “there may be some interest there”. Was he belaying an insider’s fact base? Who knows?

Latest

Talked with a friend late last night who said Willingham is as good as gone but they are negotiating for him to finish the season. They want to make sure kids keep going to class and keep working out. They feel that removing Willingham from the picture and naming an interim head coach would destabilize things too much with five games still left to go.

by John Berkowitz on Oct 27, 2008 7:26 AM PDT reply actions

ugh

Woodward should have a closer view on team dynamics than me, but I think this course of action is bad. I really don’t see this team pulling off any upsets with Ty playing out the string, and they may even lose the Apple Cup with him around. Why? I think all the tension that’s built up within the team, where teammates are fighting each other in part (or in whole) about the Ty situation, isn’t going to go away until Ty does. Everyone knows Ty is a goner, so officially announcing his “resignation” but letting him coach the rest of the games really doesn’t change anything.

Hopefully I’m wrong. The only way this season gets worse is if they go 0-12 and lose to what is probably the worst Pac-10 team in modern history in the Cougs.

Hi Kirk

Good to have you on board!

I agree with you but the AD feels that dismissing Willingham immediately and replacing him with an interim assistant will hurt more than it will help.

This team is torn apart right now. The coaching staff is fractured and everyone including the players are pointing fingers. I think things are really week to week right now.

by John Berkowitz on Oct 27, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks

I would agree that the situation as it is has become untenable – something needs to happen soon, whether it’s an outright firing of Ty, Ty “resigning” effective immediately or Ty “resigning” effective at the end of the season. Everyone knows that Ty is a goner.

The question is what is best for the program moving forward. I’m inclined to think that the division that is gorwing within the team is such that if this group of players is to have their best chance of having any success for the remainder of the season, it will only come with Ty gone now, not just officially announced to leave at the end of the season.

I have a hard time believing team discipline will fall apart with Ty gone and Tormey in charge, and I have a harder time believing this team has any shot at winning a game this year with Ty around.

I hope I’m wrong about that, as it sounds like Woodward is determined to have Ty coaching the rest of the season.

by kirkd on Oct 27, 2008 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

We will all be waiting for confirmation

It needs to happen ASAP. This team needs a new direction and some leadership from the head coach. They also need a HC who will put fun back in the game.
